Gillian White is known for her ap- pearances on the soap opera of Our and most recently the BET series Her husband, Michael Jai White, is recognized for playing the lead role in the 1997 comic book and Gambol in the 2008 Dark Rourke, had an extensive ca- reer in Hollywood, portrayed Randy Robinson in the and the villain Ivan Whiplash in Man recent credits in- clude the Amazon Prime series along with roles in such as and Own Private Sesma and Hatton spoke by phone to The Desert Sun about during the pandemic, working with the cast and the subject matter of the The fol- lowing interview was edited for length and clarity. THE DESERT SUN: What was the experience of during a pan- demic? CHRISTIAN SESMA: It was incredi- bly challenging for obvious reasons, but I also think creatively on top of that.

It was the height of the pandemic and the (case and death) numbers were horri- ble. We have extras and loca- tions were scarce. The challenges were hard to get through, much less getting tested every few days and sticking to our (COVID-19) bubble. It was a tough shoot but it was a testament to the com- munity, Mike and our production team that we pulled it This is the third pro- duced together in the valley. How does the desert into the storyline? CS: It was originally set in a small town in southern Louisiana.

I was like, we can do it in a small desert town just as and even more so here in the highlighting the east valley in places like Lake Cahuilla, Thermal, Coachella and places that have this kind of small town feel. MIKE HATTON: From a standpoint, the reason there is because of the ease of shooting and how the community steps up. The cast are all notable Hollywood stars. What was it like to work with them? MH: a good combination. got Michael Jai White, and obviously an internationally known martial arts star.

The movie is a female empow- erment story with a twist people going to see coming. Putting Michael and his wife Gillian together, they had amazing chemistry. Also, during a pan- demic when calling a union and saying not letting anybody shoot, saying our two lead actors are already hanging out together, not going to be making contact with a stranger and a lot easier to get per- mission to shoot. Mickey is an absolute legend. known Mickey for several years and a pleasure.

He thought it was a good script and the character would be a lot of fun. Seeing what he brought to a very unlikable character on the page, it was really cool to see what what he did with it. What can you say about Gillian role in this CS: serious subject matter and something on lips right now. wrapped in a mainstream action thriller where you have this female really kicking ass and getting re- venge. MH: My wife says her favorite of all the movies that Christian and I have done together, not just because in it as a TV reporter, but because she loves seeing a female heroine take on men.

Obviously with Gillian not only being a woman, but being a Black woman and over the age of 40, I have to commend Christian and the behind the movie to this stereotype and break this glass ceiling. not enough roles out there for women of color over the age of 40 and proud to say done that. How much research was done on human CS: Zach Zerries, the writer, did a good job on that. The sad thing is how varied it is. You have giant syndicates and little crazy rinky dink versions too.

MH: The movie was inspired by true events because Zach saw multiple news articles on several rings that had been busted. He took events from things he saw happening in real life and cobbled them into the backstory. We obviously have to be true to how these things are but, of course, we have to take creative liberties to keep it entertaining. Working together as a pair, do you see yourselves branching out into dif- ferent genres in the future besides ac- tion? CS: always great when you a team of collaborators and friends you can go on to have like-minded work eth- ics and goals of what we want to do in this business. Mike and I have always tried to keep pushing the envelope to do bigger and better projects, and trying to be picky about what doing.

At the end of the day, always great to work with good people, much less friends and people who are great at their job. MH: I love Christian and want to keep working with him. been part of his movies since his one when I was still working as a news host on on the He gave me my role and become great friends, our careers have grown together and for me to be able to work with my friends and people I really care about, a blessing. I would love to do some comedies and Christian knows this and I would love to continue producing for him. Desert Sun reporter Brian Blueskye covers arts and entertainment.
