retrieving the lure gave the effect of an injured minnow Keeping the Rapalla's speed down presented an easy target for the hungry Tennis os Angeles hi TO SAY the bass in Lake Menv phremagog In the Eastern ahips were hungry hut weekend would be an understatement In fact they were biting at anything we threw at them Despite the 90 degree temperatures on the lake last Saturday we found to our amazement that small- and large-mouth bass were even striking during the hottest part of the day at 3 pm We caught about 30 smallmouths in a span of four hours and were lucky enough to land a battling three-pound largemouth To top off a great day of fishing we even (looked onto a small rainbow trout But because of its mere seven Inches we released it unharmed thinking that we might hook onto it again in a couple of years Ninety percent of our fish were taken on fluorescent Rapaiias (No 5) tin light spinning gear casting towards the shoreline Bass like moderate water temperatures and when the sun burns down on the lake they'll remain basking in fairly shallow water until the rays gut too bothersome and then head for greater depths or deep shade We had great success patrolling Fitch Bay and the Georgeville (east) side of the lake looking for overhanging trees logs boathouses and other obstacles that provide bass with cover Once we found a shaded area we'd drift casting into the sltadows Believe Matches led No matches scheduled WTT Lunnski Pi Parkar persistent trolling or on Hies in the evening A dissection of the bass we kept revealed that 90 per cent had empty stomachs while the others contained recently-digested crayfish A couple of females were bearing eggs We should also mention that we landed a fair-sized perch while trolling between bass spots again using the Rapalla Although it didn't provide us with the kind of fight we got from the bass it was certainly the tastiest on the supper table later that evening And we remind readers that despite pictures we see in American Ashing magazines the size of your stringer at day's end does not work in proportion in your abilities We hooked about 30 bass but released all but the largest It has even been said that the truly good fisherman can bring himself to releasing all but the last Ash of the day providing the last is a good-sized adult That could mean no fish at all Our problem is we like the taste too much ay 10:30 am which isn't exactly the best time of the day for fishing We stopped Ashing about 3 pm and again missed prime evening fishing Although we fished during a time when bass are not normally too active we were still fortunate enough to catch our limit As is the case with most fish bass generally feed in early morning from about 5 am to 7 am and during the evening as the sun is setting and on
