nical education to her young men in the wealth producing arts The mission of the college is to prepare the North Carolinians of tomorrow for efflicent service in connection with all of our important manufac turlng industries to fit them to be builders and leaders tn public im provements to restore and increase the fertility of the land by scientific methods of agriculture scope and purpose of the col lege may be Indicated by the invest ment which wise leaders in our state legislature have made in this great movement for educating the sons of all of the people to be larger pro ducers better business men and more useful citizens in every way The college plant including the college farm of four hundred and eighty five acres Is worth by con servative estimate no less than $2 000000 It is a magnificent property of which all North Carolinians may justly ba proud Its record of service extending through a period of S3 years is also a matter for pride to North Caro By WHITAKER Oak Ridge institute was founded In 1862 and has been with tlon of a short period war between the states session Its location in western part of Guilford county 1040 feet above the sea level has con tributed much to its success The eehool buildings nestle on the brow of a hill in plain view of the moun tains and are surrounded by beau tiful oak groves fertile fields and well kept lawns 500 yards to the couth is Lake Carolina covering more than five acres and varying in depth from a few Inches to 20 or more feet The school prepares for college and for business More than 10000 have attended its sessions and they are among the leaders of the political professional and Industrial life of North Carolina and surrounding states Its equipment consists of a large administration building five dormitories an athletic building ath letic and military training grounds and Lake Carolina It Is privately owned religious in its traditions and teaching but is non denomlnatlonal The graduates of its business college departments take and hold the best paying and most responsible positions Ninety per cent of Its graduates in the literary department go to college and it is gathered from the college records that 89 per cent pass their work Its athletic activities are pro nounced or more than 80 years it has held the preparatory school cham pionship of the state in baseball Its students while at college are leaders In athletics as well as in literary activities It Is military approved by the war department but it is not autocratic It is the only prepara tory school in North Carolina 70 years old located where founded Its growth has been continuous It has electric lights and an up to date sewer system There is perhaps no better equipped preparatory school and business college for boys In the south So much for its physical ad van spirit and ideals Oak Ridge insti iuie which have its students know that they are citizens of a great state and country with obligations they should not pur posely or otherwise avoid: that thev must have knowledge of and respect for the rights of others that a man who feels himself a stranger in his own community cannot be a good citi zen that a man to be a good citizen must believe himself part of his community his state his country It would have its students constructive not destructive boosters not knock ers builders not wreckers It would give them a broad vision of life Here it is taught that honesty merit and industry must win that wealth so cial and political position are merely incidental and that snobbishness is to be despised The lives of its stu dents have justified these teachings Oak Ridge Institute a in the six departments which offer degree courses These departments are agriculture chemistry civil en gineering electrical engineering me chanical engineering and textile manufacturing The requirement for admission to the freshman class of the college is 15 academic units of credit A unit is defined as a subject pursued in schools of approved grade for five periods a week throughout the year each period being at least 40 min utes Of the 15 units required for admission to the freshman class eight and one half are specified and six and one half are elective The specified subjects are English three units history two mathematics two and one half and science one The requirements for admission to the two year courses in mechanic arts textile manufacturing one year course in auto 10 units The college is giving far as possible to all of students whose means The agricultural department gives four year degree courses in agricul tural chemistry agricultural engi neering animal husbandry biology farm crops horticulture poultry science veterinary medicine soils and vocational education The chemical department offers four year degree courses in agricultural chemistry general chemistry and textile chem istry and dyeing The civil engineer ing department offers four year courses tn architectural engineering civil engineering and highway en gineering and highway engineeringThe department of en ggineering offers a four year course in electrical engineering The me chanical engineering department of fers a four year course in mechanical engineering a two year course in mechanic arts and a one year course in auto mechanics The textile de partment offers a four year course in textile manufacturing a four year course in textile engineering and a two year course in luring Young men who education for the they are to follow are invited to make careful investigation of the vantages which are offered at North Carolina State College Agriculture and Engineering Prominent Educator of North Carolina lina people No fewer than North Carolinians have received benefits which it bestows and manufacturing and agricultural terests of the state have been vanced and made more efficient more progressive both by students of the college and by the examples of thrift and industry which they have set for those around them The number of graduates from its four year courses is 1364 Beginning with small graduating classes in the early nineties ths number has grown steadily until at the recent com mencement the college delivered 148 diplomas The enrollment for the past year was 1206 divided among the differ ent groups More than one third of these were studying agricufture about one half engineering in Its different branches civil electrical mechanical and: textile The rest were divided among chemistry and other smaller groups All of the courses include careful drill in English mathematics chem istry modern languages and numer ous other cultural subjects along with purely technical work laid down In all the history of Life Insurance we do not know of a company that has received such loyal support from its home people in so short a time We cannot express our hearty appreciation By HAYMOND BINORD President of Gullford College Guilford College the oldest co educational college In the south was opened In 1837 as New Garden Board ing school with 25 boys and 25 girls The courses offered were gradually increased and scholarship of the faculty raised until In 1888 it became a standard college offering four years of college work and was granted the right to confer the bachelors de gree A survey of North Carolina colleges has placed Gullford in the A group The institution is widely known for the high standards it main tains and for the thoroughness of the instruction that is given Not quan tity but quality has been its purpose and the profound way in which it touches the lives of the young men and women who come to it shows the sincerity and efficiency of Its efforts Not only as a pioneer but as a leader in co education Gullford has demonstrated the advantage of this method to both boys and girls Long experience and well established pre cedents have selected and preserved the most wholesome and natural re lations between young men and wom en and the result has been better work and finer achievement The homelike atmosphere the splendid fellowship and industrious life on the campus are features that distinguish Gullford The college has constantly kept abreast of the rising standards of education by the erection from time to time of new buildings the estab lishment of laboratories for the teaching of the sciences and home economics and by inaugurating new departments It is equipped for about two hundred and fifty to three hun dred students During the past year the college has added to its staff a lecturer and directory of college extension Dr Elwood Perisho formerly state geologist and president of the state college of South Dakota Dr Perisho is especially well equipped for this work having served with Mr Hoover In the food conservation campaign
