One of it'-s rare features is a 43-inile section filled with nitrogen gas used in the "soapsud for detecting injuries before they result in service break- dovns. To mark this advanced step ia Pacific coast communication, the new line was opened by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company with a ceremony in which the first calls were made between business leaders of.cities on the cable route, and telephone heads. Nearly 270 miles of the cable is underground, enclosed in fibre duct. The sheath and the undersiound features provide fast, weatherproof communication, said to be five times freer from trouble than the open wire replaced by the new line. The cable is the stvond largest size of its kind and contains 500 wires.

Its total is IS.OOO.O'io pounds. of which aiv in copper wire. The new line is one of the most important sections in the company's Canadu to Mexico cable to be finished in a few years.

The cable will carry load of over 26.000 iiords of telephone conversation each minute, together with private telegraph messages, for radio broadcast hookups and thousands of electrical impulses operating telephone typewriters for hundreds of stock and bond brokers, government offices and newspaper-. To keep telephone conversation through the cable at full volume of sound and as cltar as a local call, over vacuum tubes, similar to those used in radio sets, are ia service in 11 repeater stations along the 415-mile route.
