BLIGHT DANGER BRAKE TESTING NEAR HAYWARD NOW NOT ACM County-Wide Menace is Less Severe in This Vicinity Schroder I 1 Orchards Five Serious Infestations Found Among 90 Orchards Warm weather of the past few days has had a tendency to cause an increase in the blight infection of pear orchards in this county.

However. Wilbur Schrader, county horticultural inspector for this Ticinity, who has been making a surrey of pear orchards near Hayward. finds' that the blight is not spreading as rapidly as it was feared it might when the danger became acute about two weeks ago. He has completed inspection of 90 orchards in this Ticinity, and within the next two weeks expects to visit about 60 more. He has visited all the orchards in Happyland.

Cherryland and Meek estate districts, finding bat litMe pear blight infection. He has yet to inspect the orchards in the Castro Valley. Valle Vista, San Lor-, enzo and Mount Eden districts. The 150 growers whom he is now interviewing are not included on the list of 50 or more orchardists listed officially ag producers. Mr.

Schrader has visited about 20 orchards daily, giving information about the nature of the blight and measures of preventing its spread to the owners. His inspections followed organization of a Farm bureau committee headed by Charles Long, which Is cooperating with officials throughout the county In efforts to minimize the loss caused by the blight. Reports from the county In general indicate that a conisderable loss of frnlt will be caused by the blight this year. W. B.

Kirk, inspector for the southern section of the county surrounding Xiles, also has been busy la the work of inspection and spreading information about the blight- Mr. Schrader stated he found only five orchards close to Hayward in which blight infestation is severe. Not only the pear blight work but the task of inspecting-all shipments of narcissus bulbs from Alameda county have kept the Hayward inspector extremely busy recently. Tuesday he filed a report showing thSt there are 73 growers of the tulbs in this county. He plans to I make a survey soon to list all growers, commercial and otherwise.

BY F. E. MACABEE Commercial Tests of Policeman's Machine to Start Monday Manufacturing May Be Done in Hayward Officer a Father Complete Task in 3 Years' Work I Highway Brake Test Applied by Traffic Police A group of officers of the state highway patrol headed by Captain A. Eike held an automobile brake test Niles i cad just outside of the Hayward city limits Thursday afternoon. Of 378 cars tested, 44.

or about 11 per cent, were found to have faulty brakes. One man, Harry Avila of O'Neil load, was cited on a charge of driving with faulty brakes and without an operator's license. The officers used a portable brake testing machine for their -work. For several hours during the afternoon they stopped every car passing them, applying the testing machine to the brakes and testing for force which ho brakes were capable of applying. After three years of -work Policeman F.

E. Macabee has perfected an invention for testing the brakes of automobiles which marks a new departure In devices of this kind. A patent has been applied for and is ex- nected to reach the Hayward" man in the near future. The machine may be seen at the Hayward machine works, operated by H. Freeberg and C- Keller at S24 Main street.

In Its present form It is installed on a pair of elevated tracks on which the car to be tested is run. such as may be seen at many filing stations. These tracks are equipped with four old-fashioned treadmills which are connected to pressure-recording devices. The treadmills may be set going beneaih the car with the brakes set, and the resulting resistance then recorded. The brakes are then tightened to correspond to certain standards set for cars of various weights.

These standards vary from 50 pounds to the square inch in light cars to 350 pounds for the heaviest cars. The ideal pressure In the case of four-wheel brakes ascribes 60 per cent to the rear wheels and 40 per cent to the front. The hydraulic principal Is applied in operation of Mr. Macabee's, machine. A portable hand machine has been on the market for some time, having been granted a United States patent in 1S27.

The expansion of the Idea embodied ia this machine to the uses of a larger and entirely mechanical device has been the accomplishment of the Hayward policeman. He has had several offers from manufacturers interested in, producing the machine on a large scale. He has not decided, however, whether to accept one'of these offers or arrange for its manufacture in Hayward. Mr. Macabee plans to start commercial tests Monday, with Al August, who has been taking his place en the police force during his vacation.

In, charge of the operation. These tests will last for 30 days, during which minor improvements of the machine will be made. Tn completed form the machine will be entirely enclosed and Installed on the level instead of elevated tracks as the present model Is. In 7 artnership with his father, E. L.

Macabee. manager, of the Hunt Brothers cannery here, the policeman has been developing his invention for the past three years. He has been advised by his attorney recently that the negotiations for a patent are nearing a successful conclusion and -ihat the patent certificates may he expected to arrive from "Washing- ion.
