I I (la.) Upp«r Bet Mo!n«s fuiiday, March 6, 1956 Mow One Home-Owner Remodeled His Attic If you have an attic und if you aren't using it, you may be missing a bet. Sometimes an extra bedroom can increase the sale price^of a house by several thou- sand'dollars. And an unused attic is the place to start. That's what Verner Carlsen figured when h« found his family outgrowing his home. The way Carlsen re-did his attic is a case-study in attic remodeling that is a mine of pointers on the subject applicable to your own remodeling problems. Carlsen's attic was too small so he added a dormer. And he filled the hall corridor with built-in storage units and an extra bed. The result^-a rflriking bed-sitting room and a permanent improvement in the house that will more than pay its way when it is time to sell. Specifically, Carlsen's 17-year- old daughter needed more .space and the family needed an extra room. He'planned to solve the problem by giving her the attic and turning her old downstairs bedroom into a den and guest room, killing two birds with one stone. '-.* ".•';.* ': • , The large 1 dormer he .built onto . the attic provides more space in the area. This forms an L-shape with the attic proper giving his daughter room for two beds without crowding and a spacious area for study and .entertaining friends. • Carlsen saved himself a lot ol headaches by having a professional carpenter do the framing on the dormer. Then he finished the job himself. < He used the ecbnomical structural grade of fir plywood for sheathing on the outside of the new dormer and for the new roof decking. The same grade enabled him to finish up the sub- floor throughout the attic in a relatively few working hours. To save himself time and trouble, he also used plywood finish paneling. He broke up the monotony of broad flat surfaces resulting frbm* the formation of attic walls and ceiling, by applying his * panels vertically on the vertical surfaces with a simple decorative molding in the joints which are spaced 16 inches apart. *• On the ceilings, large, staggered squares-of plywood create a simple joint pattern which adds considerably to the over-ail appearance of the room. The finish in the bedroom area is a mist green texture paint. Carlsen used a natural finish for the plywood in the hallway which is packed with built-ins. These include shelf space and linen storage as well as a closet. And right under the roof overhang he has installed a roller bed which is hidden from sight when not in use. The whole set-up has solved all Carlseh's space problems. There is''room in the attic area '.for his daughter ~ to entertain friends without disrupting the rest of the family. And the room she left behind is another space dividend. For- emergency family guests, there are now three more beds. As far as Carlsen is concerned, the job has not only brought real Tivability to what was essentially too small a home : but it will more than pay for itself when he sells the house TITONKA NEWS Dr. and Mrs Guide Sartor and Mary Both of Mason City were visitors at the Dr. Pierre Sartor homo and the .1. Builders of homes today are concentrating on the installation of colored bathroom fixtures as prime movers in the sale of new homes, To compete with contemporary homes on the real estate market, older houses must spruce up, add color, spaciousness and convenience . Small, cramped bathrooms with antiquated, noisy fixtures un- sightly piping and worn flooring are consicuous eyesores in many older homes. With the wide variety 'of streamlined, colorful bathroom products now available through local dealers, remodeling of the bathroom is a valuable and \yise investment. Before modernizing, the existing bathroom should be ex- •amined to decide whether more "elbow room" can bo obtained by re-arranging the fixtures. Aigona (Iowa) Advance—5 Thursday, March 1, 1956 SNACK BAR WINS NEW POPULARITY IN THE KITCHEN One of the most popular features in what designers term the "living kitchen" is the snack bar. With today's kitchens becoming more and more the center of family activities and entertainment, the snack bar has become increasingly important as the unit where the family can eat breakfast and lunch and if the bar is long enough, even dinner. Snack bars require less space, in most cases, than a table and chairs. They have become particularly widespread in steel kitchens because it's easy to plan them from a wide variety of special purpose units available in today's steel kitehen cabinets. For Today's Living. Simply by selecting the standard steel cabinet units that fit your kitchen's styling, you can give the room an original appearance with a snack bar area that reflects your own personality and living habits. The surprising thing, too, is that there''s little additional expense involved to incorporate a distinctive built-in dining counter in your steel kitchen. You can fashion a snack bar, for instance, by extending a counter top at right angles from a row of steel base cabinets along the wall, forming a peninsula that projects into the room. The extended counter can be supported by an open-shelf end cabinet equipped witili chrome trimmed glass shclfes or steel shelves which add to your kitchen's decor—and which also are ideal for your toaster, • plants, telephone, rnd knick-knacks. Counter Takes Many Forms. The counter extension also can bo supported by rounded - door steel an/i cabinets which give a semi-circular design with cabinet shelves enclosed. Or you can simply use a chrome leg support to hold up the counter. The length of your snack bar will depend, of course, upon the I space available in your kitchen and upon the size of your family. If room space won't permit a peninsula styling for the snack bar. you still can fashion one parallel with the wall simply by leaving an opening the width you .desire in a row of steel base cabinets. Then extend the counter as a continuous piece from the top of the base cabinets across the opening. Easy to Clean. The hard-surfaced plastic or linoleum counter tops available with steel cabinets provide a snack bar surface that's easy to' clean jut by wiping with a cloth. And 'the steel cabinets themselves are easily kept in 'gleaming condition by the same method. They'll last a house-time, too, for the steel in the cabinets and the counters never will warp, crack, or otherwise be affected by the changing atmospheric conditions of the kitchen.
