tomorrow Two excellent songs one the title and the other Waiting at the gate for are strung with several others round a really exciting story John Boles as a drunken but successful star is redeemed by his love for Pat Pater son who Is in with a gang of harmless crooks posing as what they aren't and thereby getting straight Into Hollywood society Boles Is good Spencer Tracy as a big-hearted imposter is better still and Pat Pateison Is best of all She is a dear modest little thing with a gentle smile and a husky voice She is the best actress England lias lately sent to Hollywood It Is quite possible that Pat will challenge the supremacy of another English girl Lilian Harvey who although London-born has never made a picture in England KNOW that Bulldog Drummond (Ralph A Richardson) is one of the most unattrai tive bad-mannered and intolerably in tolerant men ever invented In English liters ture 1 know that Carl Peterson (Francis Sullivan) Is not a human being at all I know that there Is not a Baroque house the headquarters of armaments propaganda firms on Barking Creek I know that willows do not grow in East London I am sure that not even Bulldog Drummond would employ such a fool as Claud Allister makes one character appear and yet I was deeply thrilled by this film For all Its crudeness it keeps you breathless and amused No wonder the audience at the preview fought each other with excitement "The Return of Bulldog Drummond" Is at the Regal Cabaret 9SO dl THKEK UANCLNT ACK6 Dawa FICCAOILkV NOTIL-br IriWi CASAKST DAMONQ la rat aural A GfHI wahh and An Amnld Mel Maiauw serio-comic tills time Instead of pretending to be serious like "King Kong" Denham (Robert Armstrong) goes out to an island to find jewels and finds as well Helen Mack a beautiful stowaway on his boat a When he gets to the island lie rescues Sor of Kong a gigantic ape who helps him to get the treasure As you ran see nothing except the beauty of Helen Mock be taken seriously "TJOTTOMS UP" (which let with tlie successful effect of that ftorm on the screen There is one thing finite about Man of It could not possibly have been done pn the stage It could not even be adapted for the stage because the islanders superb natural actors ns they are play only a small part Their struggle seems infinitesimal beside tlie fury of the waves Man of Aran is one up for Gaumont-Brltisb for having the courage to launch a story with no beginning and no end and no love interest Unwilling Bride TT Happened One Night is one of the most entertaining films I have seen Its entertainment value is entirely due to good acting and good directing particularly to the latter Tlie story is footling Claudette Colbert a rich girl longing to be free runs away from her father to marry her aviator-lover She tries to cross America by motor-coach to get him Clark Gable sacked and self-assertive journalist Is on the same coach The girl's bag Is stolen and the two get friendly and finally fall In love They marry in an end which very nearly does but just doesn't approach the ridiculous You may judge liow good this film is when I tell you that the unwilling bride actually reaches the altar and her aviator bridegroom before she rhurks him over and even this becomes not only convincing but funny Walter Connolly's acting as the old father could not be bettered Capra has made an elegant and balunced masterpiece Typical Fields mills is a very good week for films for when 1 have reached even the third on my list You're Telling Me" at the Plaza I can still register enjoyment This Is a typical Fields comedy where we see him with a snobbish overbearing wife and a lovely daughter (Joan Marsh) IIow ho finally manages to marry off his daughter to Buster Crabbe a rich and desirable husband and get a million dollars for himself Is the end of the whole story The funniest hits are his encounters with Mrs Merchison social queen of his home town with a face like an old Newfoundland STARS to see TO-NIGHT dark
