in hla will filed In London Thursday to make the English language more efficient Is a mystery to scholars on this side of the At'anlic Mr Shaw left a large portion of his estate to the establishment of a committee that would carry out the translation of hia and other works into the new alphabet Dr Archibald Henderson Mr Shaw's official biographer reached at the University of North Carolina said he didn't know which phonetic alphabet Mr Shaw advocated and admitted he had never seen it He added that he didn't know who in the United States would know this fact A search of the of the New York Public Library revealed that Mr Shaw at one time or another favored the 40-letter "phonotype" phonetic alphabet of the late Sir Isaac Pitman inventor of the shorthand writing that bears his name Another time he liked that of Professor Henry Sweet of Oxford a phoneticlst on whom Mr Shaw modeled the hero of his play "Pygmalion" The dispatches from London indicated Inat perhaps Mr Shaw had in vented his own system Victims of Accident That Happen PORT ARTHUR March 24 -(CP) Two railway crewmen are dead today victims of an accident that didn't take nlnce The crewmen Engineer Lyng Cosgrove 39 and Fireman Nelson West 28 were riding in the engine of a Canadian Pacific Railway train at Ripple Siding 150 miles east of here They saw a freight train on the same track and apparently thinking an accident Inevitable applied the brakes on their train and jumped low banl They struck Icy snow slid helplessly into the path of their own train Another crewman who jumped with them John Me-Isaacs is in serious condition in hospital at Terrace Bay Ont All three are from Schrelber OnL George Birch also of Schrclher stayed with the diesel locomotive It rolled to a stop two car-lengths from the today VI and taking steps to make It possible for the agricultural system they Introduced to succeed The Marxist Theory In Marxist theory and Soviet practice the first stage In the agricultural revolution is the destruction of the large landowners This occurred In East Germany In 1946 The second stage is the destruction of the small landholders through collectivization TJie Soviet Union Itself Is now going Into a third stage consisting of the creation of super-collectives grouped around agricultural towns or "agrogurods" This would turn the farmers Into an urban proletariat performing agricultural laDor East Germany is probably far from being ripe for this stage and will almost certainly have to pass first through the ordinary collectivization stage The need for providing more food for the population is likely to precipitate the col lectivlzation drive The present Soviet zone was for merly able to supply the basic food requirements for its population It must now Import food from the Soviet Union and other satellite countries even to maintain a relatively low ration scale When the land reform was put through by the Communists observers predicted freely that it would result in lower production because the smaller units would be less efficient Production Drops That prediction has been born out The average production per acre has dropped and equally significant the number of acres under cultivation has also fallen There are 350000 hectares (a hectare equals two and a half acres) len arable land in East Germany today than there were In 1945 The creation of some 200000 new small farms has resulted in the curtailment of crop land for the construction of buildings ynrds and rends There are an additional 150000 hectares of arable land that are not under cultivation because they have been abandoned by their owners All together there has been a drop of 8 per cent In the amount of cultivated land The abandonment of farms Is the result of measures taken by the Communist authorities to drive the small farmer out of business and irepare tne way for collcctiv-zation The technique used Is based on the quota system of delivery A certain quota of produce must be sold to the Government at fixed trices The Government also fixes he quantity of fertilizer fodder and farm equipment the farmer may buy ana the price at which he may buy them Farmers Flee to West The practice of Fixing quotas and price i supposed to facilitate "socialistic planning" With these devices at Its disposal the Govern' ment can easily plan In such a way that a farmer la unable to ful fill his quota If he fails to deliver hia quota he is subject to heavy tensities He cannot sell or lease tis land and so he merely gives up and leaves it Many such farmers flee with their families to the west It Is Ironically the farmers who "benefited" from land reform who have suffered the most They got farms averaging less than 25 acres apiece with very little equipment and live stock and they are the ones who have found it harder to meet the ever rising quntaa The state nlana for 1951 call for delivery of 40 per cent more milk than In 1950 and 70 per cent more meat and eggs There will not however he 40 per cent more cows in more phlrknna The Communist leaders know very well and knew in 1945 that the small farms they were creating were too small for efficiency music and songs which makes for pleasant listening A blues number features excellent playing by the clarinet the trumpet handles a fine solo while the trombone Is featured with Ray in "Jungle In between Ray aings a cute Blues" and an amusing southern Item The work Is highlighted by admirable arrangements Including the jazz numbers which open and close their program and the entire act Is a fine bit of showmanship Carlos Ramirez has a strong well trained voice which he uses to advantage In tuneful Latin songs Including a soulful Cuban number and a gay Mexican air He also gives an expressive rendition of "Begin the Bcguine" and a powerful offering of the ever-pop-ular It'a a treat to hear an artist who can really sing and is not afraid to use his voice Marlon and Vic Miller open the show with a graceful exhibition of adagio acrobatics featured by smooth lifts and apectacular balancing The Mayo Brothers offer smart tap dancing atop a platform Their routines are excellent
