And ah unused attic is the place to start. That's .what -Verner Carisen figured when he found, his family outgrowing his home. .The way Carlseri re-did his attic is a case-study in attic reniodeling that,is a mine of pointers On the subject • applicable to your own remodeling problems. 'Carlsen's attic -was too small so; he added a dormer. ,And he^ filled: the hall {corridor with built-in storage' units a\hd an extra bed. The,result—a striking bed-sitting room and a permanent improvement in the house tha(; vyill more''than ;pay its' Way when :it is,time 1 to sell. A Specifically, Carlsen.'s 17-year- old daughter needed more space and the family needejl an extra room. He planned to solve-the problem by giving her; the attic' and turning her old downstairs bedroom into a, den and guest room, killing two birds with one Stone'.-'- 1; r! ; :.//•!-;; .• - f •; 5:/. ' ', The large. dormer he built onto ..the attic- provides more space in, the area. This forms an reshape ' -yitft •' the attic" jprpper giving his daughter robm for two Beds , without, 'crowding , and a spacious area for study and entertaining friends. Carlsen saved himself a lot ol headaches by having a professional carpenter do the framing on the .dormer. Then he finished the job himself. He used the .economical structural grade of fir plywood for sheathing on the outside of the new 'dormer and for the new roof decking. The same grade enabled.him to finish up the sub- !loor throughout the attic in. a relatively few working hours. To saveihimself time and trouble, he also used plywood finish paneling. He broke up the monotony of broad flat surfaces resulting "from the formation of attic walls"and ceiline, by applying 'his panels - vertically on the .vertical surfaces with a simple decorative molding in the joints which \re spaced 16 inches apart. •:"'. . On thei ceilings, large, staggered squares of plywood create a simple-joint pattern which adds considerably to fhe over-all appearance of the room. The finish in the bedroom area is a mist green texture paint. Carlsen used a natural finish for the,.plywood in the hallway which is'packed with built-ins. These include' shelf space and linen storage as well as a closet. And right under the roof over- lang he has .iastalled a roller bed which is hidden from sight when not in use.' : ; < . • The whole .set-up has, solved »11 Carlsen's space problems. There is room in the attic area 'or his ; daughter i-tp.-entertain friends without disrupting the rest of the'.jfamily. And the room she left'behind is another space dividend. For emergency family guests, there are now three more beds. As far as Carlsen is concerned,- the job has not only brought, real livability to wha! was essentially too small a. home, but it will more than pay for itself when he. sells the house Is Your Bathroom Small & Cramped? Builders of homes today are concentrating on the installation of colored bathroom fixtures as prime movers in the sale of new homes. To compete with contemporary homes on the real estate market, older houses must spruce up, add color, spaciousness and convenience . Small, cramped bathrooms with antiquated, noisy fixtures un- sightly piping and worn flooring are >consicuous eyesores in many older homes. With the wide variety of streamlined, colorful bathroom products now available through local dealers, remodeling of the bathroom is a valuable and wise investment. Before modernizing, the existing bathroom should be examined to decide whether moce "elbow room" can be obtained by re-arranging the fixtures. Algona (Iowa) Advance—5 Thursday, March 1, 1056 SNACK BAR WINS HEW POPULARITY IN THE KITCHEN One of the most popular features in what designers term the "living, kitchen" is the snack bar. With today's kitchens becoming more and 4 more the center of family activities and entertainment, the shack bar has become •increasingly important as the unit wihere the family can eat breakfast arid lunch and if the bar is long enough, even dinner. Snack bars require less space, in most oases, than a table and chairs. They have become particularly widespread in steel kitchens because it's easy to plan them from a wide variety of special purpose units -available in today's steel kitchen cabinets. For Today's Living. Simply'by selecting the standard steel cabinet units that, fit your kitchen's styling, ,you can give the room an original appearance with a snack bar. area that reflects your own personality and living, habits.''The surprising thing, top, is-.'tlidt'/therrB's little additional expense involved to incorporate a distinctive built-in dining counter in your steel kitchen. You can fashion a snack bar, for instance, by extending a counter top at riglht angles from a row of steel base cabinets along the wall, forming a peninsula that projects into the room. The extended counter can be supported by an open-shelf end cabinet equipped with chrome trimmed glass shelfes or. steel shelves w(h'ich ; add to your kitchen's dec- which also are ideal for ALBERT HAGG Specialist in Interior Decorating 35 Years Experience PHONE 1172-J I your toaster, plants, telephone, end knick-knacks. Counter Takes Many Forms. The counter, extension also can bo supported by rounded .- door steel an.d cabinets which give a semi-circular design with .cabinet shelves enclosed. Or you can simply use a chrome leg support to hold up the counter. The length of your snack bar will depend, of course, upon the space available in your kitchen 'and' upon, the size of your family. U; room space won't permit d peninsula styling for the shack bar, you still can fashion • one parallel with the wall simply by leaving an opening the width you .desire in a row of steel base aabinets. Then extend the coiin- •ter as a continuous .piece from the top of the base 6abinets v a- cros's the opening. i Easy to Clean. The hard-surfaced plastic or linoleum counter tops available with • steel cabinets .provide a snack bar surface that's easy to clean jut by wiping with a cloth. And 'the steel cabinets' therhsiefc ves "are; easily" kept in gleaming condition by the ,same method. They'll last a house-time, too, for the steel in the cabinets and the counters, never will', warp, crack, or otherwise be affected by the changing atmospheric' conditions of the kitchen.
