Oct. 13. 90-Iy-c. Wilmington, THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 17, SHOCKING STATE OF SOCIETY.

Mr. Geeeit, in the Tribune of the 8th inst. give the following description of the stale of Society in the Free State of New York. It is a pity that Societies cannot be formed in the Southern States to ameliDrate the condition of our neighbors, and redeem them from the bitter bondage" in which they are placed (a part of them) by the 'operations of the "free labor system. But the fau is, the people of the South are too much engaged in minding their men busing, to form Societies to attend to the business of others.

We do not make -the extract below to institute comparisons, and to invoke the good opinion of our northern brethren thereby. It is the opinion of our readers of the South we consult, in regard to these northern matters we would like to know what our folks think about the things described below. As to what the northern people may think of the South, especially in re-card to our institutions and the social virtues that adorn southern society, we are surprised that any one here should be anxious. When we were at the north, some time ago, we tqld gentlemen whom we conversed, that we did not care a fig about what they thought of the South, its institution of slavery, or any thing else. But we have detained our readers from the extract we make from a long article of the Tribune--a paper now one of the triumphant leaders of northern abolitionism, and would have been the triumphant leader of southern whiggery some time ago.

all things permitted Here are we in the center of the nineteenth century. Forty long ears of peace have hurled the genius of Christendom in-10 the arena of generous economy. The fiercest elements are chained for m.in's use belching and blasting steam is but a slave to his command, and his argosies ride the ocean, wave and wind defying, impelled by this sturdy growling giant all work, from the delicate nippings of the trold-smith's or the silk-weaver's art, to the huge blows-and stab3 of the forger's might, can erjnally be driven by this wondrous power, i aixl even the term of human bondage, ami ihe lust of man to manacle his fellow, would seem to be tottering to their fall, under the sweat and muscle-saving colossus ihe very hghtnhiff, tot, is grasped and sent flying on the wings of lore over countless leagues chemistry, freed from alchemic darkness, teaches us-the great resources of our mother-earth th printing press rivals the primeval the leaves it scatters richer than Sybifline uttering to puor and rich alike; the exoteric fraud of government i3 dwarfed down to a few plain ex-otericisms of daily use and apprehension the million-mass- no longer swamps the wealth of a state in buildinc a Pyramid, a St. Peter's or a Cologne Cathedral but the value of religion is found to begin with the comfortable fireside of the individual man; yet with all these aids, moral and material that dazzle the mind's ee, so thick do they crowd on the senses. we find in this great city of New York, a state of beastly barbarism not a whit above mon-archically ridden England a century aco where tangible filth and intangible crime appear to run in harness on destruction's road, and the Law of the City, incarnated in its paid and honored functionaries, stands like the maudlin judges of a horse race, or the drunken bottle holders of a prize fight, and cheers on the contestants of victory We really do seem to advance in the career of the intellect, but to be drawn back as fast in the circle of the passions.

We go round to various dance-houses, some subterranean and" some on a level with the street. They arejill equally low and lewd diDgy and diabolic. A square-jawed mnil-nnuinitsJ 1 preluding to a fight with a woman about some etiquette, in one of these dens. The compensating privilege to the sex for the want of virtue is courage, and under the fist-flourishes of the drunkard the girl stands unblenched and undaunted. So in Paris during the Revolutions, among the hardest fighters were some of the cjTprians It would fill up our paper to describe minutely tfW phenomena of all the dance-houses-in th one single-quarter where we are now supposed to be exploring.

They number about fifty, in a row or circle and inside and out in streets, houses, persons, pursuits, constitute the substratum of the lowest society of the quota of alms-houses, jails, gallows, hospitals. The girlsliave a short life, but not a merry one. Tbejr drink, swear, fight, are beaten and bruised habitually. The very moral nutriment, which is as necessary to huran nature as food, is wanting, and they fall victims early in life to extreme miseries and loathsome diseases. Their appearance is ten thou sand times sadder than that of the dead armies of the pyramids.

These last have slept in dust and darkness for three thousand years no sunless days and starless nights of the soul blacken the plane of their existence no bitter yearnings for the fifth act of the tragedy tear their trembling nerves; they are beyond satire, oppression, want and woe. But in these linked chambers of lust and not, life is caricatured with the pencil of the damned, is hid away, the summer of existence is burnt out with unnatural fires, the blood is no longer summoned by the moral law to paint the check of youth and love; no early hearts and gentle hands are here, but a galvanised corse of Being, ghastly in antics even under the spangled dome of God. We have now retraced our steps and 3iossed Broadway into Chesaut 6treet and its neighborhood. This quarter, balances uie aacoaot of infamy the North River side against the East. We go up and down, narrow, streets, whose filth need not be described Here center also the candidates for prisons and alms-houses.

Crimes nameless and terrible are here com mitted. Among the one thousand emigrants- that come to the City every day, and the domestic crowd if one or more be missing every twenty-four hours, the error of the account is not curiously set right Holes, cellars, wharves, often tell no talcs, but still a liberal allowance of murders, successful and attemped, are recorded. The minor crimes, arson, robbery, theft, For the relief otSufFeriBg It ttands pre-emi nent forKs curative -Til ihfdiS-' PZV ieh earos foremen is recommended, call' ed Female Complai uts. The Caiholicon far surpasses oiher remedies, in being more eeriain, less ex pensive, and leaving he sysii in in a belter condition.

Let all interested in such a remedy call and obtain a pamphlet (tree) containing au ple proof, from highly respectable sources, of the happy results of uso together with letters from first-class experienced physicians, who have used it in their practice, and speak Irom iheir own observations.
