DECATUR HERALD TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 30, 1931 DECATL1R HERALD woman assault FARMHAND AND WOMAN BOUND TO GRAND JURY Effingham Pair Held Without Bail to Face Charges of Murder ACT INDIFFERENT (Special to The Herald) EFFINGHAM. Juno 30-Mrs. lla Homann, 3C, and Earl Smith, 82 years old farm hand, were bound over to the October grand Jury on charges of murdering the woman's husband, William Homann, 36, following an Inquest here Monday afternoon. Both are held In jail without bond. Each continued to accuse the other of slaying the farmer on the evening of March 27.

The partially decomposed body was found burled beneath the gangway of tho barn on the Homann farm, three miles northwest of here, Sunday, when officers were led to the place by Smith after the had him arrested on an charge. The couple had maintained their alienee until Sunday because of alleged death threats from each other If one of them "squealed," thev said. Homann testified. Threatened Her, She Says According to the woman, Homann's body was not burled until morning. Smith arose at 4 a. and went to the barn and burled the body, she says. Smith testified that he had known Homann since January, 1029 and that he wont to work for the farmer In July of 1930, following completion of a term on the Illinois penal farm.

He told States Attorney Taylor In the inquest Monday that he was not near the barn on the night of the shooting, but that he heard two shots while Homann and Ms wife were doing the milking. Smith's Gun Used He did not go to investigate, either, he claimed. When Mrs. Homann appeared at the house a few minutes later, she told him that she had shot her husband and disposed of his body, according 10 Smith. then threatened to poison him with arsenic If he revealed her secret.

They agreed to say that Homann had "gone to Indiana." Smith admitted to officers that the shoot- Ing was done with his shotgun. Victim's Grave; Alleged Slayers TWO YOUTHS NABBED ON THEFT CHARGES Find Articles Stolen From Old I. T. S. Station Ralph Burcham, 18, giving his address as 833 South Witt street, and Lawrence Warren, also 18, giving his address as 1287 East Vanderhoof street, were arrested by police Monday afternoon when articles stolen from the abandoned I.

T. R. R. station were found in their car. The two youths were sitting in the car, which was parked in the 200 block South Water street.

In the back of the car were several red lanterns, an empty can, a bundle of cork gaskets, a pole climbing device such as linemen use, and other articles. L. Smith and H. C. Cobb of the I.

T. R. R. identified the articles as property the company's storeroom for linemen. Mr.

Smith and Mr. Cobb said they will swear out burglary warrants against the youths Tuesday morning. The police made a search of the station nelghtborhood when a man reported that he had seen two suspicious looking youths leave the building. Premptory Docket Call Is Postponed The premptory call of the circuit court chancery docket, scheduled for Wednesday, has been post poned until later in the term by Judge James S. Baldwin.

The change was made bdcause of the recount case, which will be in the circuit court room most of the week. Judge Baldwin will preside In Platt county circuit court Tuesday and Friday, and in Champaign Thursday. Beginning July 6, he will hold court for two weeks In Dewitt county. BAPTIZES Rev. Joseph Myers of First Kaz- arene church conducted a baptismal service in Lake Decatur Sunday morning for nine persons.

Leaves Millikin BDPEL JONES R. JONES, head of the dra-. matic art department of Millikin university, has resigned to accept a position la the University of Oklahoma. Rupel Jones to Leave Millikin For New Position Rupel J. Jones, associate professor of English and dramatics instructor in Millikin university for the last five years, will go to the University of Oklahoma at Norman next term as head of the dramatic art department.

Professor Jones came to Millikin in the fall of 1928. After taking his master's degree from Ohio State university, he taught dramatics two terms In Alabama Tech, Auburn, Ala. He studied drama at Ya-le one year. Mr. Jones and family will leave Decatur early in ST.

MARTS HOSPITAL CHAPLAIN SUCCUMBS Rev. Fr. James Wilson Dies In St. Louis Rev. Fr.

James Wilson, chaplain of St. Mary's hospital, died in St. Vincent's sanatorium, St. Louis, Monday evening, according to word which reached Decatur friends late Monday night. Death was caused by heat exhaustion and complications.

Rev. Fr. Wilson had succeeded Rev. Fr. J.

J. Dougherty, hospital chaplain, several months ago. Rev. Fr. Dougherty died last Friday.

Rev. Fr. Wilson had been in frail health for years, having suffered a hip injury in an accident. He was confined to a wheel chair most of the time. Despite his infirmity and the fact that he was in pain a great deal, he was cheerful composed.

He regularly visited patients of the hospital. His home originally was In Boston. He was educated as a physician, and left medical practise to enter the church. Rev. Fr.

Wilson became seriously ilf last week. He was taken to the sanatorium in Moran's ambulance Funeral arrangements remain to be made. It is probable that services for Rev. Fr. Wilson will be conducted In the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, where services for Rev.

Fr. Doughtery were conducted Monday morning. State to Distribute Gas Tax Semi-Annuii The state will remit gas tfc funds to the county semi-annuik instead of annually In the fiitul? it is provided in a bill signed Gov Louia Jtimmcrson. Homann, father of the dead man, told of hearing a shot, and of asking his son's wife a few days later where "Willie" was. She told him that he was in Indiana. The elder Homann's suspicions were aroused, however, and he asked Mrs. Anna Karges, his sister and aunt of the slain man, to look about the barn when she went to the place on pretext of investigating conditions In connection with a mortgage on the farm. Durbin was taken to Springfield late in the afternoon by J. M. Bouhl, U. S. deputy marshal.

V. Rannrbergcr's car made a sharp'right turn in front of his (Mr. Peniwell's) car. In an effort to avoid a collision, Mr. Peniwell was forced to drive his car Into a con'crete f.butment.

The car sideswlped the abutment. The side of the car was crushed in the rear seat upholstery was torn out and thrown into the driving compartment. Mr. Peniwell was able to drive the car back to Decatur. ENGLISHLUTHERANS HONOR CATLINS IN FAREWELL PARTY Rev.

and Mrs. Roy Catlin and family were honored by several hundred members of the First EngHsh Lutheran church Monday evening In a reception that was a farewell party for the family. Rev. Mr. and Mrs.

Catlin are moving Tuesday Maywood, and Rev. Mr. Catlin will assume his new duties as president of the Illinois synod, with his office in Chicago. All Lutheran churches of the state, with the addition of St. Louis and one other border town, are under this synod.

A. G. Webber, presented a watch for the retiring pastor, and George Horn presented a set of silverware for the family. Church officials made brief talks, and punch and wafers were served. The reception was in the Sunday school room, which was decorated with flowers from members' gardens.

Young Women's Missionary society produced a play and Mrs. Lawrence Carr gave a reading.
