movie theatres across the country audiences 'are watching a film called Saga of Postwar which purports to show how American soldiers ran the country from 1945 to 1952 The film loses no time in making its point Even before the titles it shows a beautiful Japanese girl seized on a dark street by a drunken soldier who rapes and kills her on the banks of a canal A somber male voice ex- Elalns "The war nothing to offer beyond the fact that it is the ninth teaming of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy 8M the final film of long illustrious career (he died soon after completing his scenes) it would probably be enough But the film has a great deal more to offer than the pleasure tinged with sorrow of watching two fine performers at work together for the last time a strong honest and remarkably sensitive film dealing with the problem of Inter-racial marriage Every prejudice and argument for and against such a marriage is examined with candor and often with humor not in a general preachy context but as it relates to the two particular people in question This is no harangue on the subject of Indiscriminate brotherly love nor yet a sentimental treatment of a very real problem It is a fine film full of strength and tenderness played with great subtlety and wit by an entirely superb cast Tracy Is a liberal crusading newspaper publisher happily married to an equally broadminded understanding human being played by Katharine Hepburn Their daughter suddenly returns early from a vacation bring- ing with her the man with whom she has fallen in love and intends to marry a handsome the West mount Theatre last night is the film version of the Oxford University Dramatic production of Christopher 380-year-old play "The Tragical Ilistory of Dr Faustus" starring in the film as in the play Richard Burton who with Nevill Coghill corrected the picture from Professor Coghill's script First let no moviegoer or Marlowe student be put off by the fact that supporting cast is composed uf members of the Oxford Uni-v 1 ty Dramatic Society The Society's standard of acting is much better than one meets in the average movie the performance of Andreas Teuber In the role of Mephl-stopheles being not only strong enough to stand up to Burton's virtuosity but one of the outstanding features of this unusual film But this is Burton's show and one would guess that it is a genuine labor of love art for sake Burton and Elizabeth Taylor (who is seen but not heard in the film) put up the money for the lion and in addition to co-directing and starring in what is substantially a ninety-minute monologue (Burton is never off the screen) he has also co-produced it with Richard McWhorter The result is Burton at his Russian art for auction in Nac York Xauttra NEW YORX March 15 -The first Russian works of art to be released by the Soviet government for sale in the US will be auctioned here late this year Parke-Bernet galleries announced Parke-Bernet said the works would include imperial Russian porcelaine and a large group of ikons The date of the auction has not yet been set but it may coincide with the April 28 New York premiere of the Russian movie version of "War and There was no Immediate indication of the number of items to be auctioned or their total estimated value classical best in a bravura rformance that does full stice to a stream of poetry and prose that only Shakespeare could match Marlowe killed at twenty-nine was never able to perfect his techniques as Shakespeare did and there are many dull stretches in his text but the Judicious cutting of Professor Coghill and Burton's reading of the lines leaves the visual effects of the direction and photography far behind the spoken word The cutting nevertheless is responsible for one of the several causes for possible confusion in the mind of toe average moviegoer who naturally expects to understand the whole story of a film without having to study a text or synopsis before going to the theatre It takes so long before Dr Faustus completes his transaction with the Devil that one is taken aback to find that twenty-four years have whizzed by and Faustus is being called to account What we see of his experiences make the deal hardly worthwhile (unless you consider a few looks at Elizabeth Taylor and one bodily contact worth an eternity of damnation) The glimpses Faustusis given of the carnal delights of the seven deadly sins did not seem to me either very imaginative or attractive As a straight film then this story of the young medieval scholar who sold his soul to the Devil for superhuman wisdom and worldly power is in itself neither visually nor emotionally exciting despite some very good atmospheric color photography and special effects The film is not sufficiently spectacular and this lack of visual imagination leaves the spectator with the feeling that the middle has been taken out of the film leaving onto the beginning and the end of the Faustus story But regarded as a film version of the stage play with theemphasls directed towards the best parts of Map text this film is a wonderful opportunity to see the play acted in masterly fashion against an atmospheric and evocative background impossible on htoge and I would strongly recommend it to those interested in classical drama in good acting and in Richard Burton at his historic best SJ TODAY AT
