shown on CBC TV and at the Montreal international film festival last year Mr Cohen Is currently writing the score and the title song for Don new film "The Ernie and has written the title song and theme for Derek May's film "The Angel" By CAROLE CLIFFORD The Stormy Cloverr one of Canada'i top folk-rock groups will disband In August Why a group whose sucres is more than evident by testimony of its fans should split at this time cannot be explained altogether A number of reasons was given in an interview last night prior to their performance at the Youth pavilion All however agreed that times change and ideas and people in particular But the crux of the situation appears to be satisfaction for the individuals rather than the success of the group Pat Patterson the drummer with the group which was formed in Toronto more than a year ago felt that success was secondary at least for himself am more concerned with playing and playing well" he said "Music is now a whole new world and offers a wealth of exploring to the musicians" Fenr individuals The Clovers revealed themselves as four distinct individuals unlike many groups on the scene now Dee Dee Fraser bass guitarist and sometimes referred to as the "silent one" commented: "You have to enjoy what you are doing This combined with hand work and of course the usual hang-up money is what leads to The other members of the Clovers are Susan Jains vocalist and the only girl in the group and Ray Perdue lead guitarist 1 On stage the Clovers distinguish themselves by their unique sound and almost reserved manner -Susan chats with the audience before each number explaining the origins of the songs of which many are their own compositions or those of Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot Pat who also sings presents fascinating image when he plays the drums and the iputh organ simultaneously When the Stormy Clovers part company in August it Leonard Cohen at the Youth Pavilion starting tomorrow Montrealers in and Ray will retain the Stormy Clovers name For those seeking a souvenir in shape of this group's recent record however it's sad news Not satisfied with the con vV A 4 Tbe Aussics want to write bounds of drugs with the press and you find yourself being said Dee Dee But he did say: the Stones are jailed it would be ridiculous because they will simply become martyrs to a people features a couple of groups and wild lighting The Cheetah Is about the biggest wildest club I have ever seen It holds 2600 people has tremendous projections and lighting a scopeatmn (a TV-jukebox combination) lounges to relax in a library and a really wild boutique There is even a dance called the Cheetah Shuffle that is popular down here Generally the discotheques In New York have surprisingly poor musical quality All the groups play Young Rascals The Jaybees were by far the best followed by the Liverpool Set at Trudi in Greenwich Village I'm sure I mention that the Liverpool Set (which recently changed its name to the Night Shift) is a Toronto group Originality is frowned upon The Night Shift was told not to play any original material But once audiences at the Rolling Stone got over the shock of hearing the Jaybees play songs they had never heard before they really liked them and now people are requesting Nicholls Hill originals rather than the old standbys Jobs for all Offhand say that any Montreal group could get a job at a discotheque here and would probably become a big star Favourite excuse for the lack of talent is that the good groups are all making too much money to play at a discotheque If so I guess that a lot more Canadian groups will be making it big time 'cause I don't think they'll find any new talent here We have just received our copies of the latest single "Make It or Break It's great and we also hear that it is getting considerable air in'" Montreal It's about time people recognized this group is one of the best in Montreal The disc is a Nicholls Hill production snd they deserve "congratulation too It's one of the best to come out of Montreal All of us were shocked when we heard of the dealh of Ernie Rock last week The lead guitarist Ernie was one of the best and most popular musicians In Montreal all miss him DEAN' JONES look good front here Australian teens have put out a call for pen-pals and like teens everywhere they have their preferences They list their CAREERS The I'O Box Place Pat Patterson Dee Dee Fraser tract with Columbia Records New York and not particularly pleased with the sound itself the onljl permanent mark on the music world will not be unique or you'll ning to open a Montreal branch in the next couple of months It is waiting for a licence so I'm afraid it will be strictly over 20 Trudi in the Village and Joel Heller's Eighth Wonder are both more like the discotheques as I had pictured them Again for the over 18 crowd they have bright lights wild decor and Go-Go dancers in what I call American Mod (clotheswise this city is at least a year behind the times) And while we are on the subject of dancing every (Hie down here dances better than in Montreal and usually the people on the floor that are the best The Shing-a-Ling Boog-a-Loo and the Funky Broadway are what's happening but not at all like what we do in Montreal Opea until 4 am Trudi Trik on Broadway and the Cheetah also on Broadway are under 18 clubs They are open till 4 am and there is a 83-84 admission charge The Trik holds about 1000 r4 'yt AV-w: young people choose a career Things NEW YORK been a frantic week here and all of us are pretty exhausted Not tired enough to sleep though we're having a ball are everyone's favourite topic of conversation today The group has been forced to change its name again because of conflict with another group This time it is taking no chances The names in mind are nothing short of weird even a little psychedilic would you believe Besides checking all names though Washington a usual procedure the group has also been sworn to complete and absolute secrecy Since a final irrevocable decision has to be made by day after tomorrow I promise to be able to give you an exclusive by next column Raiders at Arena We have just had word down here about the Paul Revere and the Raiders show to be held at the Pointe Claire arena Friday August 18 Sounds like a big deal with Roy Head Steve Alaimo and Billy Joe Royal on the same bill CFOX docs it again I know well how hard it is to get to the arena so I hope that some special transport will be arranged I've also been wondering if there will be a Montreal group on the show After the success at the Mamas and Papas thing a virtual necessity but I'd sure hate to have to follow them Club-hopping isn't one of the most popular sports here but if you want to there is plenty of choice I've man-aged to drag myself away from the Jaybees a ccuple of times now and catch a little the action in a few of the other clubs but thus far I've only been able to scratch the surface Besides the Rolling 3l one the most popular discotheques here in New York are probably Harlow's the Scene Arthur's the Eighth Wonder Trudi Heller's two establishments and the Cheetah The clubs have little in common The innest The Rolling Stone is probably the innest club of the right It caters to a fairly regular crowd of dancers from the over 18 set With quiet lighting it closely resembles a typical Montreal night club such as Chez Le Grand Harlow's is another over IS club featuring a band Unlike the Rolling Stone Harlow's does not feature Go-Go dancers but it is still one of the best places to see dancing The Scene is New York's rock answer to the old Penelope What it lacks in atmosphere it makes up for in good music Last week the club featured the Seeds and a trio called the Triangle that we should be hearing more about Again one of the most talked about and popular clubs In NY has an older clientele and a cooler atmosphere than the Scene the Stone or Harlow's With a $5 minimum (3 or 8350) it's people more our age that go there They have good groups and grown ups seem to enjoy discotheques just as much as teens do here They quite as hep as the kids about the latest dances but even the grown-ups are better than most of the kids I've seen in Montreal Arthur's Incidentally is plan- i7 Every young person preparing to embark on a career should have a copy of this
