Gunfire was reported earlier. The government had no explanation and the Port-au- Prince Fire Department said only that the palace had caught fire and munitions stored inside were being detonated. "Persons living near the palace in downtown Port-au- Prince said they heard sounds of small arms and machinegun fire at 2 a.m. (3 a.m. EDT) before there were signs of any fire. Later they reported the sounds of explosion of larger caliber ammunition. The area around the palace, a stark white structure built by the U.S. Marines, was cordoned off by soldiers. The rest of the city was quiet. been the Mountain area. He had stabbed twice through heart. Sgt. Ronald Griffin said, "We are going on the assumption that the girl was taken when Porter was killed." TRANSIENT CASH RATE Effective March 1, 1971 Words Mayor Calls For Federal Transit Funds MILWAUKEE (UPI) - Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier has called for an infusion of large sums of federal money into mass transit systems to "alter this utter chaos in our urban areas." Maier, speaking to the first annual conference of Wisconsin and Illinois members of the United Transportation Union during the weekend, said a dis proportionate amount of money is being spent on freeway construction. He said the growth of freeways in urban areas has created "a concrete noose around the necks of the central city poor." Pawn Shop Putter Wins ROCHESTER, N.Y. (UPI) Susie Maxwell Berning used a five dollar putter her husband bought in a pawn shop to come from seven strokes behind and win the U.S. Women's Open Golf championship Sunday. It was the third time she has won the title. Mrs. Berning methodically grounded out 16 pars—most of them by two-putting in her unique sideways style where both feet point at the hole— mafde one birdie, and suffered only one bogey. The victory might not have been possible without the $5 putter her husband bought for his antique club collection in an Oklahoma City pawn shop two months ago. She pulled out the putter Saturday after falling seven strokes behind at the 36- hole mark, shot a 69 to tie for the lead and used the 30-year- old club again Sunday in her successful title defense. J. MARTIN - 342-0521 Dr. Lanib- (Continued From Page 16) crease the saturated fat intake in their diet. For cooking purposes you can use these, and if you want a buttery flavor you can add artificial butter flavoring or butter salt where they can be used. Use This Trick In the interest of improving the ratio of polyunsaturated fat to saturated fat in commercial margarine, you can use a trick I've found satisfactory. Use two tubs of margarine with one tub of safflower oil. Whip them well in a mixer, and of course you'll have a softer mix when you're through. Store it in the refrigerator. If you like it harder, store it in the freezing compartment. It is still spreadable, but a great deal softer, which some people may like. Dilution of the margarine with one-third safflower oil greatly improves the ratio, since safflower oil is only eight per cent saturated fat and 72 per cent polyunsaturated fat.
