Fal of rea R.I ma Bel stei traditional courses should be mainmore time must be given in their to practical training. Too often, teachers point out, has man been in Hebrew and Greek but lack-Oing in knowledge of matters for which the ministry is directly responsible. Two Courses Open According to Dr. W. A.

Gifford, acting principal of the United Theological College here, two courses are open to the churches. "They may either." he says, "continue in the classical tradition, in which case they must courageously insist upon the acquisition of the necessary prerequisites before students enter theological colleges: or they may abandon the classical tradition in a standard course leading to ordination, while retaining it in a degree course imposed upon all the colleges and appointing a central board of examiners for all." Dr. Gifford has stated, in other words, that the churches must either insist that students be schooled in Greek and Hebrew before entering theological studies, or must set up a separate degree course for divinity students in which the study of these languages is included. The professor admits that the study of Latin, Hebrew and Greek was set up as a classical curriculum by reformers of the 16th century. Today, however, they are all "dead" languages and are increasingly neglected.

Most ministers on pastoral field acknowledge that they forgot their Hebrew and Greek shortly after their ordina- tion. Inadequate Training Prof. Clarence T. Craig, of Oberlin Graduate School of Theology, has said "95 per cent of the ministers graduating from theological seminaries are not being adequately trained to supervise the educational program of the local church." To counteract this alleged failure of the divinity schools, various corrective movements are underway within the principal Protestant denominations of the Dominion and the United States. "Ministers must have a thorough, practical training in all responsibilities active ministry before ordination," Dr.

Harrison E. Elliott, of Union Theological Seminary, New York, has urged. President John A. Mackay, of Princeton Theological Seminary, agreed that "ministers must be capable of communicating a the Christian gospel." That these and other ends will eventually be achieved is the hope of all church educationists. The churches themselves are currently conducting a number of investigations into the advisability of changing curriculums in theological colleges to suit postwar needs.

the United States the International Council of Religious Education is carrying on a two-year study of Christian education, while in Canada each denomination has its own board of religious education, whose concern it is to inquire into the needs of present-day divinity students. It is the belief of most forwardthinking pastors today that the of present extreme shortage clergy in all of the churches will not be alleviated until the theological colleges adopt more "learning by doing" programs. While it is readily acknowledged that theology provides the substance of the minister's sermons, there is a wide gulf between the theologian and the pastor. And this is the gap, say those who advocate renovation of theological studies, that must be bridged. Montrealers Survive Cornwall Weaver CORNWALL, Dec.
