F. Bryant- TRIBUTE TO LINCOLN BY ROOSEVELT Tells a Freeporl Audience What a Croat Man President Lin- coin Was. President Roosevelt's speech Fmetmrt. Woiinesdnv Is well worth being preserved and rend by It has excellent thoughts and delivered as It wns at the scene of the Tamous debute between Lincoln nnd Douglas has nddltlon interest: Congressman Hltt, and you my follow countrymen: meet here today to commem orate one or ttiose numerous scenes of this country, on which tne wnoie future of the nation wos moulded Here was sunken the wlngeil wonin. Hew through time ami nil throuch enteruitv.

Here was siiunu eri the keynote of the struggle which tore the convictions of the nations. ut ptmvictionH which it lias now oniy i memory nnd made them united and free. And It. Is fitting mat tne dedication of IhlH monument given by omen of this city In commemor ation of the great event that took place here, that the monument woiiki he dedicated to tho men whose deeds made good the words of Aiiranam Lincoln. Tho words were mighty Had It not been for tho words, the riodiiR rnubl not have taken place, And It Is forever to the lienor, of our nation that we nml ttie aiaies- man who with mlglity vision piurceu the clouds and saw what the future hold for us; and Torcver tn our honor that we hnd back of the statesman, nnd behind him the men to whom It was given to fight in the greatest war over maintained Tor the good of mankind.

I have but a moment here. I could not resist the chance that was given me to stop ami dedicate the monument reared In honor of Abraham Lincoln. Tho future will put him on a higher pinnacle than wo have put him. In all history I do not believe that there is to be found an oralor whose Hpeecnos will last ns long as In all history, with the sole exception of the mini who founded this republic, so great a man cannot be found. We cannot loo highly honor him.

anil the way to honor him Is not only with our Hps but by loyally or the benrt nml honoring the memory of Abraham Lincoln by so conducting oursot. ves as citizens of this republic, thnt wc shall hand down to our children the heritage wo received from him, and from the men who upheld him. Undeniably the picnic waa a success. The multitude might been slightly more multitudinous. Carctul compilations places the figure now at about 20,000. lint those 20,000 enjoyed themselves Immensely and the people of this city were not sorry they came. Xot many years ago a Modern Woodmen picnic sometimes meant many free-for-all flints, a general spirit of rowdyism, and a large quantity of drunkenness.

Not so yesterday. But neither was the other eitrerao of stasnatlon and Inck of amusement reached. The afternoon program went off like clockwork. The fire run won a mass of favorable comment, not simply from the unthinking general public, but men who are connoisseurs in such things. "Inside this state I have not seen a.

city save Milwaukee which has a Are department which could make a better showing than that." sa.a Col. llolllster of Madison. Chief of police Uaker of Madison agreed heartily, and Chief Bernard of the Capitol City fire department admitted the excellence of the equipment nml the beauty of the run. With Chief Klein, with Con Murphy as driver- in the lead the nm was made by the company from the two stations out on West Milwaukee street toward the Five Points. Every horse was on parade and knew It, and the sight was magnificent.
