Commencements Great opportunities as well as responsibilities, for youth in the post-war world were predicted by speakers at two high school graduation exercises on Saturday evening when certificates were presented to students of the Commeretal High School and Baron Byng High School, as well as medals, prizes and scholarships. Rev.

Dr. F. W. Norwood, minisof St. James United Church, delivered the address at Commercial High School, and Prof.

John Hughes, chairman of the department of education at McGill University, spoke at Baron Byng High School. There will be greater chances for youth after the victorious conclusion of the war, Rev. Dr. Norwood promised the pupils of the Commercial High School; not necessarily bigger chances to become rich, he added, but bigger in the sense that the tasks to be performed by young people will be greatly increased in size and will call for "big men, for you can't make big men on little Chances To Be Better Outlining the types of jobs which he thought would fall to the lot of the graduates, he declared that in his opinion there would be no need to fight Germany or Japan again in this generation. He stressed that they would have a better chance to make something of their lives than the people of any generation since the world began.

J. G. Darragh Presides C. Darragh, superintendent of education for the Montreal Protestant School Commission, presided at the Commercial High exercises. valedictorians were Norman Nadler and Thelma Watts.

F. N. Stephen, in his report as principal, said that graduation certificates were presented to 76 former pupils, and that 85.4 per cent of the enrolment in the 11th year succeeded in the final examinations. In a review of important events of the school year, he pointed out that $1,298.44 was raised for Russian Relief. Canadian Red Cross and Chinese War Relief.

The sale of war savings stamps netted $1,270.25 and much work was done by pupils in gathering salvage. During the year 517 articles were made by women members of the staff and girl pupils for refugees, soldiers, sailors and airmen. Medals were presented to Alice Rosenweig and Norman Nadler. Prof. Hughes Speaks At the Baron Byng High School Professor Hughes told the graduates that they were moving into a world where they would required for a time, at least, to practise the sterner simplicities of life and learn thrift in order to thrive.

This discipline would be healthy and might help to wean them from a juvenile adulation of wealth and material success and teach them something about more lasting and permanent values. "In 1943 Montreal is within 60 hours' flying time of given part of the world. The dykes are down and isolation is out. The schools must educate not only for the nation but for humanity. All countries of the world will henceforth be members one of another." Prof.

Hughes added that war tended to intensify racial conflicts and, in this province the universities and schools had a most usefu! role to play in fostering better feeling. "The deepest need is still a broad, generous liberal education, inspired by humanist and religious ideals, which express themselves in a modern constructive way," he concluded. Year Successful In the absence of Dr. J. S.

Astbury, principal, the year's report was given by R. A. Patterson, viceprincipal. He recalled that of 40 either pupils the in senior Grade 12, 32 received high school leaving de certificate of the province or senior matriculation at McGill. The eleventh-year examinations written by 94 pupils and 84 were successful.

Paying a tribute to evidences of of goodwill on the part of members the graduating classes, Mr. Patterson recalled that twelfth-year pupils had collected $394.70, of which $100 was earmerked for two scholarships in the senior class and the balance was to be added to the endowment fund for similar awards in future. The junior graduating class raised $70, to be used for a suitable memorial to be erected after the war to pupils of the school who died in the conflict. J. W.

Perks, assistant superintendent of Montreal Protestant schools. presided. Valedictorians were Ruth Seidman and Mortimer Bercovitch. Prize winners were: Commissioners' silver medals. Ruth Seidman and Lionel Goldfarb; Graduate Society scholarship of $50, Ruth Seidman; twelfth-year scholarships of $50 each, Edward Capelovitch and Moses Gerstein: Steinberg's Limited scholarships of $50 each.

Strike Still On A.F.L.

Official Appeals to Ottawa public. Company View SHAWINIGAN FALLS. Nov. (Star Special) -Today being All Saints' Day and a holiday, only enough men were working in the two plants of the Aluminum Company of Canada to carry on continuous operations that are necessary to prevent pot lines from freezing. The strike is still going on although officials of the National Catholic Syndicate- -who have the contract with the company, -state that there is no longer any strike, and that as pot lines are brought into production there are men available to operate them.

The company announced that one of the three lines of 140 pots that were frozen eight days ago, when A. F. L. organizers called a midnight strike, would be back in operation tomorrow morning. Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and also troops from Farnham Camp, who were called Monday morning to clear pickets from the gates of the two plants in order to enable National Syndicate members to carry on their work, are still on duty.

The company claims that for the last full day, ending at 12:01 on Sunday morning, there has been 1,371 at work, exclusive of 250 office staff, out of a normal payroll of 2,250, and that a check-up of time clock cards showed that only 731 had not yet reported to work, Union officials claimed 997 were known to be out and said that the count was continuing. Three guarantees were asked last night by Paul Fournier, president of the Montreal Trades and Labor Council and vice-president of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada, before the strikers return, is looking after A.F.L. Interests on instructions of William incarceration its president, folTowing of Philip Cutler and Jean Jodoin. They were that the workers should have freedom to vote for the union of their choice; that there should be no discrimination against workers when they went back, and that a conciliation board should be appointed. Mr.

Fournier told strikers last night that he had sent telegram to Premier Mackenzie King that the men would be willing to return to work the Government set up a conciliation board to inquire into the union's grievances. At the same the Montreal district Council of the International Association of Machinists approved a message to Premier King asking Federal Government to arbitrate the strike, call off Federal police and troops, release arrested organizers on bail, and take over all plants of the Aluminum Company of Canada. The Machinists also asserted in their telegram that they protested against "men being awakened at night and told to get back to work or report to the army" first time such a charge has been made Regional Labor Board. Interview Refused An answer on behalf ofe the Aluminum Company of Canada in answer to Paul Fournier's "conditions" was given this morning by E. V.

N. Kennedy, director of education, in a statement which declared that a man can belong to any union of his choice or no union at all so far as the company is concerned, there being standing notice in the plant for a long time to this effect. As to a vote being taken, was governed by the law and anyone could appeal for such a vote to be taken. is no discrimination being There, the company regarding workers; a all who report are being taken back, and the company is glad desirous to of have meeting them becausommit: ments in the supply of important war material. "We are making arrangements today, which is a holiday, so that tomorrow morning we can put them all back on their regular Mr.

Kennedy said. "There will be work for everybody who reports." As to the conciliation board request, Mr. Kennedy pointed out that the Provincial Minister of Labor, Hon. Edgar Rochette, had stated that the matter of winter and summer schedule for potmen was one for decision by the Regional War Labor Board and the National Syndicate had petitioned the board thereon and the matter would be heard at the Montreal session of the Regional Board on Wednesday next. In addition there was the question of wage differences between the different plants and these had been referred to the National War Labor Board on July 7 last.

Speedy R.A.F. Mosquitos attacked, targets in Western Germany last night, the Air Ministry announced today simultaneously with the disclosure that these hard-hitting planes now are being successfully. employed on the home front as night fighters. The announcement did not. specify the objectives of the raiders, one of which was lost in the foray.

The disclosure that the quitos now are doing defensive as well as offensive work came when it was made known that they had downed three Nazi raiders over Britain in the last two nights. The famous plywood fighter bombers were said to be proving highly effective in countering the German hit-and-run raids and were credited with a large proportion of the losses inflicted on the Nazi air force recently in small scale attacks on Southeast England and the London area. London had another brief alert last night as German raiders flew inland over the Thames Estuary at high altitude, but only three or four penetrated to the vicinity of the capital. A few bombs fell in outlying districts and one man was killed and several other persons were injured in one suburban area. Bombs also fell at scattered points in Southeast England, but few casualties and little damage were reported.

British bombers, escorted by fighters, yesterday attacked German airfields on the Cherbourg Peninsula and railway targets in Northern France, while manned Mustangs penetrated to the Paris area where they shot down two enemy planes. Two British fighters were lost in these sweeps. It was disclosed, meanwhile, that the American air. arm in Britain is being heavily strengthened, and it was predicted that the 8th Air Force might soon approximate Britain's own R.A.F. in size.

"The shift stopped was the one that normally worked from midnight Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, the smallest shift in the plant as only the most essential work of continuous processes is carried out on Sundays, and all other week day operations are closed. The actual number of men in plant 1 on this shift is 152 and for No. 2 197, so that it took but a relatively small number of well-organized and well-directed pickets to stop these workers going into the plant and that caused freezing of the pots." Mr. Fournier stated that Frank Fenton, of Washington, A.F, of L.
