THE MONTREAL DAILY STAR, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1942 Tea and Coffee Check-upAsked Local Merchants Urged To Comply With Ruling Montreal grocers were urged to complete their inventories of tea and stocks immediately, as required the Wartime Prices coffee, and Trade Board, as a check-up has shown that approximately 90 per cent have so far failed to with the board's order. Inventories were ordered by the board in connection with the of tea by 10 cents a pound and coffee by four cents a pound which went into effect on Monday. 9 (A. -Fourteen persons have been executed and another six sentenced to death in Nazi-controlled Europe on charges of "Communist activity," treason, and food-law violations, German sources reported today. A Paris court martial imposed the death penalty on six Polish students accused of fomenting Communism. Among them was a girl, Scyffra Lipszyie, who was said to have been active in Republican Srain -before taking refuge in France. Five other young Poles were sentenced to hard labor for life.

The so-called People's Tribunal in Prague sentenced 10 to death for alleged treason against the Nazi Reich and the Czech Protectorate. Neue Tag of Prague the sentence had been carried out. Neue Wiener Tageblatt reported the execution of three men in Vienna after their conviction of treason by a Nazi court. 100 Awaiting Death LONDON, Dec. -Fighting French headquarters asserted today that the Germans had taken 100 hostages from the population of Lyon in reprisal for an attack on a German soldier there on Dee. 1 and that the hostages were reported now to awaiting execution. The Fighting French said this was the first instance of taking hostages in what was unoccupied France before Hitler's Nov. 11 oCcupation of the whole country, although scores have been executed in the old occupied zone.

Some of the Lyon hostages are women. "On Nov. 29," the headquarters statement said, "a pro-German demonstration was organized in the Place Belle Coeur at Lyon. The demonstration was broken up by crowds which hurled insults at Nazi troops who intervened to restore order. "On Dec.

Lawrence Receives Award Well-known in local military circles before the war when he he'd a majority in the 4th Divison al Signals, R.C.C.S., Capt. D. Lawrence, who reverted in order to go overseas as a paymaster and is in the R.C.A.P.C., has been awarded his Canadian Efficiency Decoration, according to word received here. His wife and family live at 5200 Musset avenue, N.D.G. Capt.

Lawrence served in the old Corps of Guides both during the last. war and in post-war years, but during 1918 served in the ranks of the 79th Battery, C.F.A. He was commissioned in 1923 and on the disbandment of the Corps of Guides joined the 4th (Res.) Divisional Signals. He was appointed acting adjutant in 1933, promoted captain the following year, and gained his majority in 1938. Japanese Curb Undue Optimism Capt.

Morrison Dies at Tweed TWEED, Dec. 9 (C.P.) Mrs. Eva Pearly Sully Morrison, wife of H. Lloyd Morrison, died yesterday. Mrs.

Morrison came to Tweed in 1938 when her husband was appointed pastor of Tweed United Church. Born in Metcalfe, Mrs. Tweed taught in Eastern Ontario for 20 years. She was on the staff of the Ottawa Board of Education and for a time was secretary of the Religious Educational Association in Ottawa. Albanians Propose New King-less State LONDON, Dec.

9 (C Chatin Sarachi, former Albanian Charge d'Affaires in London, said today he had telegraphed the United States Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, asking assurances of the creation the of a free state in Albania, excluding the exiled King Zog. Laval received no visitors this morning, Transocean said, but "devoted the last hours of his stay in Paris to intensive work with close collaborators in the Hotel Matig. Savo Island Heroes Awarded Decorations WASHINGTON, Dec. 9-- (A.P.)President Roosevelt awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor today to three "very close personal friends" who were heroes of the naval battle at Savo Island November 13, in which a huge Japanese force was driven away from the RISE canal Island. American forces occupying Posthumous awards were made to the families of Rear-Admiral Norman Scott of Washington and Rear-Admiral Daniel J. Callaghan of Oakland, who were killed in the battle.
