in -Page 26-THE INDEPENDENT Long Beach, Aug. 9, 1956 Bob Kelley Saus- I chuckled heartily report exploded. Familiar the report like the time with driving an auto that 1920 McCoy's alleged agers such as his cousin Sparky control McCoy and Cal Eaton commission yes, they Why? Because 1 was saying the same things on the Parade of Sports way back in the time, I was branded an upstart punk, a Johnny-ComeLately from Cleveland who didn't know anything about boxing conditions in L.A. My lone champion was boxing inspector Willie Ritchie, who provided me with some of my information. Or you might say I was Ritchie's lone champion.

Though he was-licensed by the state to run boxing, Willie was powerless to halt the Olympic monopoly in face of an athletic commission that Eaton and McCoy seemingly had tin the sack." He turned to me. And Iresponded with nightly exposes of the Olympic dynasty. They Trot Classic to Longshot GOSHEN, N. ACTUALLY, THE whole thing, started when Frank Sinatra tried to buck the Olympic's monopoly by staging a pretty fair scrap at old Gilmore Stadium between Jersey Joe Walcott and Joey Maxim, both later to become champions of the world in their respective weight classes. At every turn, Frankie was thwarted by the vigorous tenacles of the Olympic. So I went to bat for the guy, and it was then we aired most of the current charges against the current charges against McCoy and Eaton. For instance, there was a fighter named Fitzie Fitzpatrick around at the time, who was pretty hot stuff. Mr.

Fitzpatrick was suspected of being a housefighter belonging to matchmaker McCoy- a highly-illegal arrangement. By a strange coincidence, Fitzie's "front" manager turned out to be none other than Sparky Rudolph, the latter turning out to be none other than Babe McCoy's cousin. I also brought up Babe's police record, and in defense of the man, say he was never convicted on any charge. Actually, since the bitter moments of '47, have found McCoy to. be a witty, charming man extremely entertaining.

But nine years ago, I aired the fact that Babe had jumped bail on a matter of a very warm automobile in Brooklyn, and 'headed West. I even had the newspaper clipping and photostatic copy of the police blotter report. WEDNESDAY, I note the Governor's report made a big thing of this matter, though I've been in possession of the evidence for nearly a decade. Willie Ritchie used to tell me he'd get calls at all hours, from people attempting to pull a "Gas Lights" bit on him, and drive him a bit rocky. Ritchie confided that these calls, might have been coming from his old buddies lat the Olympic.

This was never proven, however. Speaking of calls, I think I wrote here once about one I got during those hectic days of 1947 when I was playing the Jim Cox of radio. About three in the morning the phone rang, and some bird with a Humphrey Bogart voice on the other end hissed: "Better wise up, Kelley, and lay off the Olympic." That' was all no death threats, or anything. It was an obvious and amateurish attempt by someone to scare me. Come to think of it, I believe it did.
