Beirut planes strafe enemy BEIRUT (AP) Government military aircraft strafed Palestinian and Moslem positions next to Beirut airport yesterday in the first air force strike of Lebanon's civil war. Hundreds of casualties were reported in both the strafing and in fighting at a half-dozen, localities.

Two British-built Hawker Hunter jets hit a MoslemPalestinian force on a highway south of Beirut, then fired on guerrilla positions at the nearby Bourj Brajneh "Palestinian refugee camp after taking anti-aircraft fire from there, military sources said. A spokesman for Middle East Airlines said Beirut International Airport was closed for about an hour during the jet attack. Police said 116 persons were killed and 200 wounded in fighting in the last 24 hours, increasing the death toll since last April to more than 9,000. The fighting is over Moslem demands for political and economic reforms and Christian resistance to them until the government clamps down on the Palestinian guer- rillas. Technically neutral The armed forces, under Christian command, have.

been technically neutral in the fighting. Premier Rashid Karami, a Moslem, protested the jet attack to President Suleiman Franjieh, a Christian, pointing out that he is also defence minister and asking who ordered the attack, government sorces said. Franjieh was reported to have replied that he knew nothing about it. Military sources said the planes attacked "unnamed elements" that seized an army convoy en route to evacuate casualties from Damour, a Christian town under attack south of Beirut by MoslemPalestinian forces. Palestinian guerrillas and tough Moslem Druze mountaineers assaulting the town of 12,000 said Interior Minister Camille Chamoun, a Christian and a former president, called for army, navy and air force intervention to rescue Damour.

'Terrible massacre' A spokesman for Chamoun's National Liberal party si said Christians were fighting house-to-house against attackers who came into Damour's eastern edge, "committing a terrible massacre, killing 30 women and children." Chamoun's mansion is a mile from the town. Fighting also was reported in Beirut and its Christian suburbs, the eastern town of Obituaries Albert Eaton Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Albert Eaton, 82, at Paperman Sons 5605 Cote des Neiges. "Hospitals are full and scores of families in the Moslem- populated slum of Karantina died as fires burned their huts out of existence." a police spokesman said.

Washington that 9,500 Cuban soldiers were fighting with the MPLA and 1,000 others were en route to Angola. They estimated Russia has sent arms worth $200 million to help the MPLA and Cubans and predicted that once they secure the north, the reinforced Cubans will move to the southern zone. The south now is held by units of the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which is allied with the FNLA. Tass said Holden Roberto, leader of the FNLA, has fled and sought sanctuary in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire. Zairean President Mobutu Sese Seko is Roberto's brother-in-law and a staunch supporter of the FNLA.

The MPLA and FNLAUNITA alliance are fighting to rule the potentially rich West African nation, which received its independence from Portugal last November. Will protest Mobutu's government announced it would protest to the United Nations the bombings by Cuban troops of the Zaire border city of Dilolo Wednesday. While it called the attacks bombings, there was no mention of aircraft. Previous reports were of shellings. A statement issued after Mobutu returned from Dilolo said: "This is a cause for war." It warned the Soviet Union and Cuba that "the serious consequence to which any repetition of these acts of aggression against a SOVereign country could lead." Zaire officials said the highway and railroad bridges across the Kasai River to the Angolan city of Teixeira de Souza had been destroyed by the Cuban attacks.

They did not mention casualties but said Dilolo's hospital, railway station and customs building were heavily damaged. They denied MPLA claims that Zaire warplanes had bombed Teixeira de Souza, killing six persons, and said Zaire would welcome a UN investigating commission. Tanjug, the Yugoslav news agency, reported fom Luanda, Angola, that the MPLA claimed its forces turned back attempts by Zaire troops to attack two of its strongholds in the oil-rich Cabinda enclave. Cabinda is separated from the rest of Angola by a 20-mile strip of Zaire. More refugees Meanwhile, a total of 34 more shiploads of refugees fleeing Angola's civil war were reported last night to be heading for Walvis Bay, South West Africa.

Twenty- -four boats crammed with nearly 2,700 refugees are already anchored off the Walvis Bay port, a South African enclave on the South-West Africa coast. The South African government has refused to allow them to dock. The latest flotilla is expected to arrive on Monday, from the Angolan port ofBenguela, harbor authorities said. Those already arrived came from the southern Angola port of Mocamedes, reported to have been torn by fighting between the supposed civil war allies of FNLA and UNITA. Portuguese consular officials yesterday picked their way through the dangerously overcrowded boats deciding which of the refugees could go ashore.

Portuguese citizens, most of them white, will be taken off the boats which arrived a few days ago after a hurried departure from Angola. The remainder, mostly black Angolans, will have to stay aboard and face an uncertain future, possibly having to return to Angola.
