Business illegalities hurt U.S. consumers WASHINGTON (AP) Illegal and anti-competitive business practices may cost. American consumers as much as $80 million a year, assistant attorney-general Thomas Kauper said yesterday. He said the justice department is focusing increased attention on investigations of price-fixing and other violations of U.S. anti-trust laws.

Kauper, head of the antitrust division, told a task force 0 of the House of Representatives Republican Conference that periods of inflation tend to encourage competition and widespread price-fixing. I admit I have no hard evidence to back it up," he continued, "I suspect that in the U.S. today there are hundreds, if not thousands, of local and regional price-fixing conspiracies, which operate to the detriment of millions of American consumers." Federal warning Heavy licorice use may be bad for health By JEFF CARRUTHERS The Star's Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA The federal health department has warned that excessive consumption of licorice or licorice-flavored products, especially medicine, could pose a serious hazard to health. Persons over the age of 60 and persons who either have or are predisposed to heart and circulatory ailments or kidney disorders are particularly susceptible to the effects of the active ingredient of licorice, glycyrrhizin.

Studies have shown that the substance can cause high blood pressure problems which resist conventional treatments 'and which can lead to irreversible organ damage. There are known extreme cases where excessive consumption of licorice has produced congestive heart failure and high-blood pressure crises. The warning, according to a health department toxicologist, is aimed primarily at doctors and drug manufacturers, cautioning about the use of licorice-flavored medicines, especially in susceptible patients. The department suggests doctors avoid large-scale use of licorice-flavored med i- cines in general and be cautious about any use of the products among the elderly and those suffering from Quebec beaches polluted QUEBEC (CP) A report made public yesterday by the provincial environment protection service says at least 10 beaches in the Quebec City area are highly polluted. The report based its findings on a series of tests, conducted during 1973 and the spring of 1974.

on water samples from 35 beaches in Chauveau, Montmorency and Portneuf counties. The environmental service found two beaches which were judged to be in "excellent" condition, three considered in "good" condition and 30 others which were judged "mediocre, bad or polluted." The environmental service classifies water as "mediocre" when 80 per cent of the samples contain between 501 and 1000 bacterial coliform per millimetre. The classification is given to water which contains more than 1000 bacterial coliform and when the number passes the 2.400 level. cardiovascular and kidney ailments, because of the potential health hazard. And the department suggests that drug manufacturers reconsider the use of licorice as a flavoring agent in drugs. A government toxicologist added that while normal consumption of licorice candies and other licorice flavored consumer products, such as licorice liquers, should not pose a hazard, excessive consumption would. In the case of licorice candies, he said there were known cases of persons who ate "pounds" of licorice a day developing symptoms of the licorice-induced disorder, called pseudoaldosteronism. The symptoms of the disorder start with weakness and headache followed by No butts about it, sex best CHICAGO (Reuter) Smoke may not always mean their is fire.

"When people stop smoking, their sex life improves," Dr. Alton Ochsner, a leading advocate of non-smoking, says in all article in Today's Health, magazine of the American Medical As o- ciation. Cigarette smoking may cause impotence by lowering hormone production and reducing stamina, Ochsner, 78, said. Nicotine also causes blood vessels to contract. A study of 2,000 men had shown severe disturbances of sperm mobility among men who smoked between 20 and 40 cigarettes a day.

Ochsner added he had greater success in persuading people not to smoke for sexual reasons than for fear of cancer. high blood pressure, edama or swelling of the tissues with water and other fluids, and sometimes muscle disorders. In the majority of documented cases of the disorder, the major sign was high blood pressure which resisted known anti-hypertensive therapy. The best treatment, assuming irreversible organ damage hadn't already occurred, was cessation of the use of licorice products. This would normally result in complete recovery.

Licorice is used in some drugs mainly as a flavormaking agent. It has also been used for many years in the treatment of peptic ulcers, although serious side-effects were noted, the health department says. In candies and other consumer products, the licorice usually isn't as concentrated as the extracts used in medicine, so there is not as much danger of adverse effects, the health department toxicologist suggested. In one clinical study, scientists estimated that three per cent of all high blood pressure cases admitted to a particular hospital during a sixmonth period were the result of licorice-induced pseudoaldosteronism. When this deal was playedthe first time, West's opening lead of the club four was covered by dummy's ten. The ten-spot won the trick as East followed suit with the nine. It seemed to South that East's nine was almost. surely a singleton. South concluded from this that since East was short in clubs he, rather, than West, rated to be "long" in trumps.

Following his feelings, at trick two he cashed dummy's king of trumps, after which he led the trump ten. When East played low, South did likewise. As is evident, the ten-spot won the trick. A third trump lead was made next, East's queen falling to South's ace. When play had ended South had fulfilled his contract, losing one heart, one diamond and one club.

When the deal was replayed our new South declarer also arrived at a four-spade contract, via the same sequence of bidding as presented above. But this West defender, unlike his counterpart when the deal was played originally, did not lead a low club at trick one. Instead he chose to open the ace of hearts. He then continued with a second heart, East's queen being ruffed by South. With no clue to guide him (i.e., East's presumed possession of a singleton club), our South declarer now made the normal play in a nine-card suit headed by the ace, king and jack: he cashed the king and ace of trumps, hoping to fell the queen.

And so East's queen of trumps was promoted into a winning trick and South ended up going down one, losing a trick in each suit. Thus the first North-South pair scored 620 points for bidding and making a vulnerable spade game. And their teammates, silting East- -West on the reply, scored 100 points for defeating South's four-spade con- The plane was found about 40 miles north of Cranbrook in the East Kootenay. It went missing while on a flight from Castlegar, in the West Kootenay, to Calgary. Later in the day, another Canadian Forces helicopter discovered the wreckage of the missing Burnaby aircraft.
