(AP) Looking pale and nervous, Donald Segretti surrendered at the federal prison here yesterday to begin a sixmonth sentence for political sabotage. Accompanied by his father, the 32-year-old California lawyer drove a car past reporters at the prison entrance, but they caught up with him in front of the camp office and he told them he has "mixed reactions" to his sentence. Asked whether he feels bitter, the lawyer said only: "I'm not saying I do and I'm not saying I don't. I'll have a better idea in four or five weeks." Segretti was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty in October to violating federal election laws during a Democratic party pre-presidential election test in Florida in 1972.

He can get out two months early with good behavior. Segretti said earlier he has seen his life turn into an "absolute nightmare" in the 13 months since he was first implicated in the scandal related to the Watergate political espionage case. He said he has lost most of his friends and hasn't been able to get a job. have paid a terrible price for getting involved in this sort of thing; what semblance of order I have in life is shattered Segretti said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "I got out of the army and instead of stepping off on the right foot.

I stepped off into a cesspool." It was shortly before he got out of the United States Army in 1971, Segretti said, that he met with Nixon's personal lawyer, Herbert Kalmbach, who told him he would be paid $16,000 a year plus expenses. He became what some would call a "political prankster," others a "saboteur." He still maintains that "99 per cent of the stuff I did is perfectly legal." But he did plead guilty to three misdemeanors, including conspiracy and distributing political literature which did not, identify the persons responsible for passing it out. Among the items Segretti was accused of distributing was a letter on election campaign stationery of Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine accusing two other Democratic candidates for the presidential nomination, Senators Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Henry Jackson of Washington, of sexual misconduct. Bacteria may live on Jupiter WASHINGTON (AP)-Bacteria scooped from an alkaline spring hear Livermore, are providing scientists with new evidence that some form of life might exist on the planet Jupiter. Scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration facility in Mountain View, have found that the rod-shaped bacteria can grown and reproduce in solutions 10,000 times more alkaline than water. Such organisms have been found before, but they couldn't tolerate the presence of sodium hydroxide, the alkaline agent, at such concentrations. Studies of Jupiter have revealed evidence of the presence of hydrogen, ammonia, methane and water.

This environment is expected to be highly alkaline. B.C, where The tape was his recollection of a meeting on April 15 with former White House counsel John Dean, fired because of his involvement in the Watergate bugging and burglary scandal. It was the third such tape recording now declared either non-existent or missing. Investigators were anxious for a record of the April 15 meeting for evidence to corroborate or reject testimony by Dean that the president knew about efforts to cover up the Watergate scandal. The White House already claimed that it has no tape recording of the Nixon-Dean meeting despite a sophisticated electronic system for monitoring conferences and telephone calls in the executive manison and that there was no record of a telephone conversation with former re-election campaign chief John Mitchell three days after the Watergate break-in in June, last year. However, the president said in a statement he would provide the courts with a complete record of meetings and conversations with people associated with Watergate, including the June 20 phone call with former attorney-general Mitchell.

These would go beyond the nine tape recordings originally subpoenaed two of which were declared missing last month. Presidential spokesman Ronald Ziegler said the president intended to meet head on not only the Watergate scandal but also other allegations of currupt or unethical activities by himself and members of his family. The Watergate scandal and the missing tapes has stretched his credibility to breaking point. Thelatest public opinion poll by the Louis Harris organization says 64 per cent of those polled believe he is doing a poor job as president. The 32 per cent favorable rating is the lowest he has received since entering the White House nearly five years ago and compares with 59 per cent when the Vietnam ceasefire agreement was announced in January.

The latest Gallup Poll reports that about three out of four Americans believe Nixon was involved to some extent in the Watergate bugging scandal and nearly four out of 10 believe he should be removed from office. Other allegations that have hurt the president's image are that he paid only minimal tax a few hundred dollars despite his income as chief executive; 'hat government money was used to improve his property in Florida and California, and that the milk industry made generous contributions to his campaign fund in return for government favors. Ziegler said the president could address himself to answering these allegations and others regarding his personal finances or those of daughter Tricia Cox who is said to have broken law in connection with the sale of some Florida property.
