EEMSpi Bli WUiAKS XOU KAYDEII IYH THOMAS BRADLEY ronto Symphony Orchestra took over the direction of the second pair of orchestra concerts on the schedule of the Vancouver International Festival The Festival Orchestra which consists of the Vancouver Symphony augmented by the Vancouver Chamber Orchestra and a few key players from the east was heard in a new work by the Mont real composer Pierre Mercure the Dvorak concerto with 'Canadian Zara Nelsova as soloist and finally Shostakovich's boisterous Symphony No 5 As In the opening pair of concerts under Herbert Von Karajan's direction there will be a single change of program for the repeat performance: the Dvorak will be replaced by the Brahma concerto for violin and 4cello in which Miss Nelsova will be joined by the violinist Betty-Jean Hagen Of immediate interest to Montrealers is the Triptych for Orchestra by Mercure which was commissioned by the festival for this concert As the title suggests the work is in three movements Unlike most tri-sectional music however it consists of a single quick movement flanked by two slow movements instead of the more usual order of fast-elow-fast Total ploying time Is eleven minutes The music gives the impression of having a focal-point of tonality almost impressionistic in character although it would not surprfce me to learn that the whole thing had been worked out with a tone-row technique: these days apparently serial writing can be made to sound like Puccini if the composer chooses broad use of the full orchestral forces once again illustrates his well-grounded skill in instrumentation and his instinct for color A factual description of the Triptych cannot go beyond this and from now on my persona reactions must figure in these remarks I thirk the Triptych is a weak work and something less than the Vancouver commission deserved The quality of music cannot be measured in minutes but past experience suggests that Mercure could have made much more of these three short movements The sounds like a short introduction to something much more important which never arrives The quick movement is a frantic explosion of energy in which the showy effects seem to have no more purpose than to conceal the basic lack of substance The final panel of- the Triptych was again in the nature of an introduction this time leading to silence It would be no kindness to say that this wu simply an off-moment for Mercure This mwsiLis was made a full year ago and if the Triptych wu the most the -composer could produce in the intervening time he would have done better to ask for a release from the commitment Zara Nelsova Is really at her best in the romantic works of the 'cello repertoire and there wu every reason to expect her performance of the Dvorak concerto to be one of the highlights of the festival Her full and beautifully controlled tone her fluent finger technique and her eloquent phrasing are everything this ripely romantic work requires All then thing were in evidence In her playing in this concert but unfortunately the orchestral performance did not always meuure up to the soloist Entrances wen sometimes timid and shaky and the winds wen not always accurate Then were some fine passages particularly in tha slow movement but they' wen too often cancelled out by the basic lack of co-ordination Earlier performances have shown us that the festival orchestra is capable of professional playing of a high order and we can assume that a conductor with Walter experience and nputation can lead Jhe Dvorak along with the but of them For these reasons the fault can probably be traced to the division of rehearsal time It's my belief that too much of it wu devoted to the Mercure and the Shostakovich symphony on the assumption that a favorite classic like the Dvorak would present few problems The fallacy hen of course is that the Dvorak 'is a particularly difficult piece with constant changu of tempo within each movement Susskind's best qualitiu came out in the Shostakovich scon It was a clean energetic and thoroughly exciting reading The brilliance and caustic wit of tbe writing wen clearly displayed although the line was allowed to go a little alack in the Largo movement IMiiii-HMR-UlieaiGB THEY ODTSHOCK THEM ALL!
