B4 The News Tribune Friday July 1 1994 Anti-gay-rights workers say foes harassed them gather the number of signatures needed to get the measure cm the ballot Paying workers according to the number of signatures they gather is illegal in Washington However state officials say the measure still would go up fin a vote Nov 8 if sponsors turn in enough valid signatures because the person who signs the petition isn't violating any law And Thursday the sponsors of I-608 ran full-page newspaper advertisements in Tacoma Seattle Spokane and other cities at a total cost of about $20000 1 think it is very encouraging the ads It essentially means they are really concerned about getting enough said Bishop Lowell Knutson of the Northwest Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Doug Burman chairman of the Washington Public Affairs Council and a coordinator of the 608 campaign acknowledged the campaign does need more signatures But he said the allegations of intimidation are true In one instance at the Southcenter Mall he said gay-rights supporters surrounded a petition table and insulted their volunteers Security guards had to be called he said By Stephen Kipp The News Tribune An association of churches opposing the anti-gay-rights initiative I-608 on Thursday rejected claims of intimidation made by the ballot sponsors calling the accusations a sign of desperation This is strong he said Although the C-17 can carry larger loads the 747 can carry heavier loads And the 747 is less expensive: about $156 million each less than a third of the cost of a C-17 already built and
