says By Cindy Brown The News Tribune King County is liable for losses the Seattle Mariners are suffering as a result of the Kingdome being dosed county Prosecutor Norm Mataig said Monday Maleng said the county would have to pay the Mariners fin1 lost profits and extra expenses the team has incurred since the Kingdome was closed July 19 after four ceiling tiles fell into the stands The Mariners estimate their losses could reach $400000 to $500000 a game or about $3 million fir the six home games lost so far Maleng said how much of that the county would pay had to be negotiated with the Mariners games in Thcoma's Cheney Stadium could actually happen next week Officials of the Mariners and the stadium spent most of Monday tiying to figure out how the mqjar-league team could transplant some of its games into the minor-league ballpark Even though the Tacoma Tigers have home games scheduled for most ofthe dates the Mariners might need dub and stadium officials agree that staging Maimers games during the day and Tigers games at night could satisfy both teams could make baseball history Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said after touring Cheney Stadium with American League representative Dick Butler "If the Kingdome isn't ready for us certainly like to see that happen "But before anything could happen here have to get approval mom the league the visiting teams and the association None of thoee is a rubber stamp with the only viable option being that the Mariners remain road warriors for as long as the Kingdome is available extending their current 11-day trip to as many as 32 days King County officials are scheduled to announce today when they expect the Kingdome to be reopened The Mariners say they have been led to believe the dome will not be ready lor the Aug 2 start of a nine-game homeetand but that it should be available by the time the team hits the road again on Aug 10 The Mariners have three other homes-tands remaining this season (starting Aug 22 Sept 6 and Sept 27) which the team expects to be unaffected A temporary move ly the Mariners Tacoma would mean that two of three major sports franchises have found refuge in Tacoma during periods when was more bad financial news for the county which loses an estimated $10000 every day the Mariners The county also likely faces a 1 repair bin Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said Monday the team
