The caue and effect of the strike is given thus by the Post "The origin of the stiike amon the Factory girls of Allegheny, was this Heie-tolore they have been receiving $2 25 per week in orders on stores, bin owing to a change in affairs, the masters have discovered that the system mihi be abandoned to great advantage; and in secret conclave, agreed to p-iy cash in future, but to reduce the wages to SI 75. The same paper of a subsequent date, states that the success of the Factory Girls in the late strike has aroused the working men throughout the city, to a sense of the duty which they owe to themselves and families, and they seem sanguine of success in speedily putting an end to the grinding system which has for years been practised upon them by their employers.

Tie Democrats have carried both Hou ses the btatc Legislature, bevond a douot! STATE LEGISLATURE. The Democrats had eight majority in the Senate, and thirty majority in the House of Delegates, last year was the first time for many years that they had a majority on joint ballot. They never had, within our recollection, so large a majority before. It was caused by the apathy of the Whigs. Both parties expected the Democratic majority to be reduced this year.

The returns received show that the Whigs have gained one Senator, by thirty or fortv majority, in the Caroline district and five Delegates, as follows Dem. -er and ncy the public, and the impression was created that they never would be able to meet thei engagements fully so that holders were glad I to get any thing at all for it. Drokers and stocKjobbcrs then reaped a most bountiful harvest off the substance of the noor man. by buying up the depreciated paper, and as soon as the whole circulation had been thrown into their own hands.the puolic was! notified with a jrreat flourish irmnnpi. that "The Pennsylvania Bank will resume specie payment on Monday next 1" The Moyamensing Bank will resume specie payments on all her liabilities Tuesday next "77e Penn Township Bank will be cadi to meet all dimunds at the counter with gold and silver on Wednesday next! And so on to the end of the week; and c. i when Saturday night arrives the fleeced victim will have a most sorry account to rendpr of his "six day's labor." Thus is the toil and sweat of the laborer used to feed and pamper a purse-proud aristocracy; and yet there is a great body ol the American people one of ihe great political parties of ihe day the Federal-Bank-Clay-Whig party, justifying and approving of this wholesale method of robbery, and then modesly term it a "fair business truns-action!" The imlfijcnikiit 'Ijviuury.

"Down ivith the Sub-Treasury!" "Ku union of swoid and purse!" were anions the thousands of inscriptions on the political finger boards erected at each lane and alley highway and byway, by the Whigs oi 1S1U to lead an unsuspecting public astray and "decoy strangers into unfrequented places lor the purpose of robbery." Well, they did put some, and a good many too, upon the wrong track, and did decoy the people into their dens, and they did rob them, and they did put down the sub-treasury; but it WOULD' NT STAY DOWX The sub-treasury law, notwithstanding us repeal by the 27th Congress, is at this moment in more efficient operation than ev en when sanctioned by the statuary law. The writer of the money articles in the New York Herald, makes the reason obvious. He says, the principles contained in it, are those of the laws of trade. It provided foi the collection and disbursement of the pub lic moneys in gold and silver. At the time it was legally in operation this was impossible, from the ascendency of bank power- 1 hese banks have perished, the paper van ished, and the current of events, and the laws of trade, re-established the sub-treasu- in spite of its repeal by lawyers.

THE CALL, nserl in a conspicuous place the cal for a Democratic State Convention to as sembled at llarrisburg, on the 5th of Sep- tember next, for the purpose of nominating candidates lor the office of Canai Commis-Isioner to be elected in October next. We think the day set apart, is wisely selected, uiiierent counties will have 1 -V ial, and Adams one liepreseniative. Democratic Xalional Convention. The matter of the time of holdin Democratic National Convention is now fast settling itself down lo this one point May. 18-14.

So decrees thai supreme arbi ter, Public Opinion. The period designaud by the Democracy of Pennsylvania, we are hd to bciieve, will be generally adopted. It is fixed in accordance with the time-honored usages of the party usages under which we have so frequently triumphed. Tlie efforts of a few politicians inroads upon this long established practice L-tneeting wiih but liuie countenance and support, and the quartette which have already declared with ihem, will 0 doubt soon see ihe propriety of reconsidering their action, and in the pure spirit of Democracy yield to the will of the majority. The states which have declared for No vember, 1843, are but four in number, and are New York, Tennessee, Missouri, and Virginia.

Those in favor of the good old rule, May 1814 are Maryland, South Carolina, Mich-'gan, Kentucky. Louisiana. pw Hamn. shire, Massachuetts, Alabama, Mississippi anu Pennsylvania TEN in number. This we thinkjsettles the question: as such sla'es as remain nndpri.lo,t uc i.i.
