Tbc Sumter Pilgrim. WASHINGTON, June tbe Senate reception room at the Capitol yesterday I met an old gentleman whom Senator Butler informed me was Capt. Robert W. Andrews, of Sumter, South Carolina. He claims to be ninety-three years old, and engaged in walking from Sumter to Boston to visit a son residing in the latter city.

The Captain wears heavy brogan hboef, his pantaloons are of a light check, and hil veet is of a gray material, worn over what appears to be a linen coat. There was no coat over the vest, but the entire outfit was covered with a thick grey shawl. His face wrinkled and his whiskers arc white. His eyes are bright and his step is aa light as any man's could be with tuch shoes. He the absence of an upper coat by saying that tbe shawl was more convenient, as he could take it off in the heat of the day and cover himself with it when the cool evening came on.

The Captain says he has a wife and ten children, all of the latter being married. In 1812 ho drove from Stateoburg, to', Charleston, and back, making the trip in fix months. He is making hi? present trip on foot simply for pleasure as he puts it, and to notice the changes in the country through which he travelled so many years ago. His only companion is a little black dog which bo calls "Fido." He ts armed with two pistols and a paper box of certificates as to good character and endorsements from officials and citizens in and around Sumter. One letter was from a brothe in-law of Senator Wade Hampton.

His object for stopping in Washington waa to see Genetal Hampton and lo pay his respects to President Arthur. He says he has spoken to every President from Washington down to Arthur, with the exception of the late President Garfield. The Captain travels about twenty-five miles a day. Thu? far he had good luck, alwavt. a comfortable t-f-i to r.lcep in nt night and plenty to eat.

He is prepared to pay for all be gets, but very few persons with whom be Btopped hr ve allowed him to pay. He has been weil treated all along the road. The Captain says he never uses tobacco in any form, but sometimes "takes a dram" when he thinks he needs it. He will not drink poor liquor. If ho cannot get good liquor ho goes without it.

If ne needs two or three "drams" a day he takes them, but' be sometimes goes for weeks without touching a drop. Ile appeared to be very anxious to see 8enator Hampton. Whon ho renched Richmond, some one informed him that Congress would adjourn before he could get-th Washington. The Captain boarded a train and rode miles then got off and made the rest of tho journey on foot. Senator Duller told him that Senator Hampton was expected in Washington Friday or Saturday of this week and that ceeroed to satisfy the Captain.

He was thc object of much attention from employees and visitors to tho Capitol. Ho talks freely bis tramp and incidents connected with it. While in Washington Capt. Andrews the guest of Messrs. Thomas lt.

Titting Webster Against Himself.

Public men sometimes find it ineenvouent to be confronted by a previous after they bave changed their opinons. Tho louth's Companion gives an nteresting incideut of this sort which iccurrei? in connection with a speech by dr. Webster at a great tariff' dinner at Philadelphia in 1846: At that time no Philadelphia paper tad a corps of reporters at all competent make quick work of a two hours' peech, which requires eight men to relort verbatim with the requisite dispatch br an early issuo. The consequence ras that it was past ten o'clock the next riorning before the Whig paper appeared. There was a saucy Democratic heet published theo, called the Pennsylanion, edited by the late Colonel Forley, which played a nico trick upon an xpectnnt public.

The editor hunted up Ir. Webster's great speech on the tariff lelivered in 1824, which was a thorough? argument for free trade, in direct ipnosition to tbe oration of the evening lefore. Colonel Forney struck off" a argo edition of this speech as a supple? Dent to his paper, heading it, in his Etrgest type, Webster's Great Speech on he Tariff The newsboys made the town ring with his cry soon after sunrise. Horace reoloy, who had come over from New fork on purpose to bear the speech, and ras anxious to get an early copy for lublication in the New York Tribune, usbod out of his hotel and bought eevral of them. Many thousands of copies vero sold before the joke was discovered.

The Democrats were naturally in great to see Mr. Webster thus Brayed against himself. TUQ Whigs not be expected to relish the jest, east of all Mr. Greeley, who vented his inger in unmeasured language. Mr.

Webster himself, who loved a nke, took it io good part, laughed ily, and to tho friend who banded dat the paper, "I think Forney has irioted a much better speech than the I Vnm'iO 'aft night."
