THE INTELLIGENCER. LOCAL MATTERS. BRIEF XXXTION. The Ladies' Store makes a very lair prop osition to its customers in to-day's issue See advertisement. Rev.

David Hagood, of Pendieton, been elected pastor of the Colored Baptist Church of this place. The stockholders of the Anderson Farm ere' and Mechanics' Association should member the annual meeting next Saturday We are requested to announce that Rev J. McCollongh will conduct the regular services of the Episcopal Church in Grace Church oa next Sabbath morning and after? noon. Mr. A.

B. Towers is adding considerably to his dwelling house in town and is putting extensive repairs upon it. When completed its appear mce and convenience will be great? ly improved. A. J.

Stringer, of Belton, means exactly what he says in his advertisement, and will surely give employment to Trial Justices unless money is forthcoming at once from those indebted to him. The-services of the quarterly communion Presbyterian Church will begin on Friday right next and be continued through Saturday and Sunday following. Rev. Rob? ert Reed, of Roberts, will be present. Persons who are fond of indulging in the of snow-balling will doubtless the announcement that we are to have i twenty-six snows this winter with unfeigned The almanac says so, and of course no reasonable man will fail to provide an abundant supply of fire wood for the snowy days.

We would call attention to the advertise? ment of Mr. J. Robson, of Charleston which appears in this issue. Mr. Robson announces that he has arranged to have new brand of, fertilizer made to his order and to bear his name.

His experience in the business and the satisfaction he has heretofore given are a sufficient guarantee of the future. New Salem Division, No. 99, Sons of Tem? perance, was instituted at Salem Church on last Saturday by Deputy Grand Worthy Patriarch, A. B. Towers.

It has fifteen charter members. Mr. R. M. Bnrriss was elected W.

P. and Mrs. L. H. Watson R.

8 The division meets again on the fourth Sat? urday afternoon in this month. We are pained to -record the death of Mrs Catharine Norris, relict of the late John E. Norris, which occurred at the resi? dence of her son-in-law, Dr. J. L.

Crumley on Sunday morning last, in the 87th year of her age. Site had been an invalid for two years, and for the last six months suffered greatly. Her remains were buried at the Presbyterian church on Monday last, in the presence of many relatives and friends. Governor Chamberlain has pardoned Miles, who was convicted of larceny at the recent term of the Court of Sessions for Anderson County, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment in the county jail. Her physician certified that her condition was such that she would undoubtedly die unless removed from the jail at once.

Her pardon was earnestly recommended by Messrs. James L. Orr and John E. Brcazeale, for the sake of suffering humanity. Ii is no uncommon thing to hear boys complaining that they cannot get positions or employment.

They do not try right. It is related that Stonewall Jackson walked from a distant part of Virginia to Washing? ton to make personal application for an ap? pointment to West Point. President Tyler gave it to him immediately. If a boy or young man wants a position or employment let him imitate Jackson, and act so as to shew himself worthy of what he aspires to, and then he is sure to succeed. It is estimated that the present cotton crop of South will be 321,000 bales against 400,000 bales last year, while the en? tire crop this year will be 3,800,000 bales against 3,750,000 bales last year.

Hence the price will likely remain low, and our peo plejcho have made a light crop will lose most heavily. The remedy for this is to plant more corn and small grain; to reduce the acreage of cotton planted and to increase the production per acre by a high use of fertilizers and a thorough system of cultiva? tion. Mr. W. W.

Russell, of this County, was a quite successful exhibitor at the recent State Fair in Columbia, receiving four premiums and an honorable mention, as follows: Bale of $10; sample of cotton mention; lot of mium, native $20; milch Mrs. Russell also received a silver premium for a peacock fly brush. Mr. John B. Adgcr, of Pendle ton, received the following premiums on stock, which he exhibited at the State Fair: Matched $25; saddle $20; gelding 5 years old? premium, $15; berkshire berkshire sow and $10.

We are gratified at the success of these ex? hibitors from our County, and regret that more of our citizens did not compete. STATE AGRICULTURAL FAIR. The State Fair last week was not a com? plete success, and some are Intimating that it was a decided failure. Certainly, there was not much enthusiasm in its favor prior to the event, and the attendance of visitors and exhibitors was not nearly equal to form? er occasions. All this is to be regretted by every friend of progressive agriculture in the State, and we trust that the tacts con? nected with the State Fair will awaken Sresh interest among the farmers and planters, stimulating them to greater exertions in the future, so that the State Agricultural Society will be lifted from its present embarrassed condition, and placed on a secure and per? manent basis.

It was determined to hold a summer meeting of the State Agricultural Society on the second Tuesday in August next at An? derson C. and a committee was appoint? ed to confer with the superintendents of the various railroads to secure free or reduced rates of passage to and from the meeting. We believe that the citizens of Anderson will highly appreciate this action of the So? ciety, and will unite in the most cordial manner for the entcrtainmont and pleasure of the members. A committee was appointed to wait upon Governor Chamberlain, and request his as? sistance in securing an appropriation for the Agricultural Society, which is in a crippled condition financially. The committee were received in an informal manner, and after talking the matter over, the Governor as? sured them that he would render whatever assistance was in his power to secure an ap? propriation from the Legislature.

The fol? lowing officers were elected to serve the en? suing year Thomas Taylor, of Rich Wash. Watts, Lanrens; Huffmann, Lexington Richard To zcr Columbia; James M. Eason, Charles? ton B. F. Crayton, Anderson.

W. Holloway, New MeD. Miller, Ab? beville; John B. Adgcr, Pendlcton; Wm. Wallace.

Har? rington, Chesterfield. INCENDIARY FIRE. We regret to learn that the dwelling ef Mr. M. E.

Telford, near Belton, was con? sumed on Thursday last at about 3 o'clock p. under such circumstances as to plain? ly indicate it to have been the fiendish deed of an incendiary. After dinner Mr. Telford took his family to his father's house, some four or five hundred yards off, and after sit? ting for a while returned home to get some things he needed in his work, which was some distance from his house and in the woods. On leaving he locked the house and left it as he thought safe.

It was soon, however, discovered to be in flames, and those who arrived first found the whole in? terior in a blaze and all the doors open. The flames had so far progressed that it was impossible to save anything except one feather bed. Mr. Telford is a young gentle? men of industrious habits and quiet de? meanor, who has the confidence and freind ship of the community, and it is impossible to imagine who could have committed the villiany of destroying the home he had se? cured by his own exertions for himself and family. We hope the perpetrator of this deed may be fenetted out and visikcl with the severest penalties of the law.

Mr. Tel? ford was not insured. The past summer was colder in its average any summer in the last eighty-six years. Persons residing in the county of Ab? beville obtained 116 premiums at the re? cent State Fair in Columbia. Twenty cigars per head are annually manufactured for every man, woman and child in the United States.

Florida will produce an unusually large crop of pine apples this season. They promise to ship a million to North? ern markets. Mrs. Fred. Grant will assist her mother-in-law at the White House re? ceptions this season.

She is expected to supply the place of Nellie. The house of Bishops, of the Protestant Episcopal Church, at its recent session in New York created two Bishoprics. One for Africa and one for China. The Atlanta and Richmond Air Line is ordered to be sold for the payment of, the indebtedness of the company. It extends from Atlanta to Charlotte, a dis? tance of 265 miles.

McMahon's salary as President of France is stated to be two hundred thou? sand dollars a year. This is a princely income, and yet the President has vexa? tions and troubles which make him occa? sionally speak vaguely of resigning. The new constitution of Nebraska pro? vides for the election of United States Senator by the people. This is an inno? vation upon the theory of our govern? ment, which looks upon the Senate as the representative of the sovereignty of the States. The State Fair this year is said to have been very much inferior to former years, both in the quantity and quality of arti? cles exhibited and the number of persons in attendance.

Mr. W. M. Lawton de? livered an excellent address on Thurs? day, but had only about 50 listeners. Thirty-one nations propose participat? ing in the American Centennial.

There will be a thousand French exhibitors, and Prince Frederick William of Ger? many is announced among the distin? guished European visitors expected. Gen. Fitzbugh Lee is to be field officer of Centennial Legion for the South? ern States. Jefferson Davis has accepted the Presi? dency of the American department of the Mississippi Valley Society of Lon? don, tendered by the President of the organization. The object of this move? ment is to direct attention to the devel? opment of the commercial, agricultural and miueral resources of the valley of the Mississippi.

Mr. Davis will devote his entire energies to the work in this country and Europe. HYME.VEAL. MARRIED, on the 16th of November, 1875, by Rev. Jacob Burriss, Mr.
