B4 The Morning News Tribune Tuesday Oct 30 1990 leaking state poachers pay deerly Lopez Island store historic site bums Big-game decoys help i The sky was glowing red five miles away We had real trouble on our hands Firs CNefLany Schultzs A Pennsylvania Judge recently threw out a case on grounds that shooting a fake deer does not amount to shooting a deer The Wall Street Journal reported Kahler said the decoys which range from plastic figures with reflective tape for eyes to models with real hair and wagging tails an an important tool for fighting what Kahler and others feel is a losing battle against poachers 40000 deer are taken legally in this state every year and Just about 40000 are taken Wildlife spokesman Doug Zimmer said-Tbe illegal-kill estimate is based on formulas developed by New Mexico and British Columbia he said Kahler said Washington has only 133 enforcement agents and about percent of them are largely confined to desk work The field agents are hard-pressed to catch even a fraction of poachers be said State wildlife statistician Kathie Sprout estimated there are SOO arrests a year for Mg game poaching with the majority involving deer and elk About S3 percent of those charged plead guilty or are convicted Sprout said knows where the game at so they usually go in a different direction With their CB radios they have a tendency to keep track of us all the Kahler said Furrer talked about the problem as be sat in his truck preparing papers needed to seise the shooter's rifle and scope Friday night feel sorry for him The deer deserve this a neat nab elusive also could seize his vehicle but the agents said it was too beat up to bother with Wildlife Sgt Ray Kahler and a reporter watched Friday night's stakeout and bust from a low Muff directly above the scene The reporter was permitted to go along after agreeing not to dlscloee the site of the stakeout as night poachers are called the lowest" Kahler said witching his men search the Jeep and write a citation against its lone occupant reason doing It is pretty simple Greed And easy You shine a light on a deer at night end freeze The light confuses Kahler said that as far as he knows Washington Judges so far have rejected defense claims that the decoys amount to entrapment William Vermeer of Thurston County recently pleaded guilty to shooting a decoy and was sentenced to five days in Jail and a $150 fine Mann said have two other guys who haven't gone to court he said Judges in several other states Including Idaho and Minnesota also uphold poaching charges against those who shoot deer elk and other wildlife decoys state officials said Jeff Tbeikn a wildlife agent in St Cloud Minn said shiners caught shooting decoy deer usually are convicted of poaching But the
