School Board seating changed That's only first of several 'streamlining' moves planned by new president By NANCY BUTTERFIELD The News Tribune Cathy Pearsall, Tacoma's new school board president, has followed a tradition started by former President Mignonne Peterson: one of her first official acts was to change the seating arrangement of the board. At Thursday night's school board meeting, Pearsall rearranged seating so board members are to her left and Superintendent Del Cross and Business Manager Nick Schaefer are seated on her right "This way, the board is all together, and the superintendent is close enough that I can communicate with him when necessary," Pearsall told The News Tribune in an interview. Peterson, during her recent presidency, had moved Cross and Schaefer to one end of the table, apart from board members, and had seated herself at the center of the other four members. Previously, Cross had sat among board members at meetings. Peterson said she believed that if the board were to function as a unit, members should be seated together.

She felt it was inappropriate for staff members to sit between board members, she had said. But her new arrangement raised some eyebrows in the district, where board-staff seating had not been addressed formally before. Cathy Pearsall made the seating changes after calling for a board vote, and said that while the new arrangement in itself is not important, the process she used is one that will characterize her presidency. "The way I handled it is the way I intend to handle everything this year," she said. "All decisions this year, in an effort to strengthen the board, will be made by majority vote or consensus.

Sheriff's Lt. Merl Sterling said a search by airplane Friday failed to locate 26-year-old Michael Riemer, a roofer who failed to show up at work Friday as expected. Riemer's wife, Diana, 21, and their daughter, Crystal, went with him on trapping trip along the Nisqually.

Sterling said they were not equipped to spend the night in subfreezing conditions. "We covered miles and miles of the river and couldn't find anything," he said. Trying to cover hundreds of miles of roads on the ground without any clue is too difficult, he said, adding that a ground search would not be started until it was known where to begin. Lloyd Riemer, the missing man's father, believes his son's vehicle must have slipped on black ice and gone over a bank somewhere. "If he was not over a bank upside down, he would have been out a long time ago," he told The News Tribune.

Lloyd Riemer said his son generally parks the truck by the side of the road while he checks traps set along the Nisqually at various points.

Michael traps "any furbearing animal," his father said, including muskrat, mink, otter, beaver, fox and coyote. "He usually starts by the (Nisqually) Delta near the freeway and then goes past Frank's Landing, where he crosses the river in his boat and returns," Lloyd Riemer said. He said his son's route continues onto Weyerhaeuser Co. land, hitting the Nisqually River in different spots and following the river to Alder and up to Elbe. Across the bridge at Elbe toward Morton, he said, his son checks a couple of spots, then returns home via Ohop Lake and Kapowsin.

Riemer said Michael makes the circuit in a day, getting home at night. Occasionally, he will take Diana and Crystal with him, Riemer said. Michael had warm clothing but Diana and Crystal only had light coats, Riemer said. They had no sleeping bags in the vehicle. "They weren't prepared to be out overnight," he said.

Anyone with any information that might aid sheriff's officials is asked to call the Lakewood precinct at 593-4970. Cathy Pearsall has plans to seating to all board members to make, not just myself." Pearsall said another change she plans to make during her one-year presidency is to streamline the board's decision-making process so meetings don't run on for hours. Tacoma School Board meetings frequently last until 11 p.m. and sometimes go on until after midnight. "If we can't make our decisions in one-and-a-half to two hours, maybe we're in the wrong business," she said.

"That problem comes up when one or two board members have not done their homework," she said. "If they have questions of the staff, they should get answers before the She believes her Legislative experience, particularly her ex- Holmes Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
