FRED MENDENHALL Known In This City Escapes From the Lunatic Asylum.

Fred. Mendenhall, who was committed to the Insane asylum last June, from the vicinity of Bell ranch, es caped this morning between 8 and 9 o'clock. It Is not known how the es cape was made, nor in which direction he went, but a search is being made for him today. Mendenhall has had a checkered ca reer, having been married two or three times, as well as serving time in the penitentiary. His numerous matrimo nial adventures might readily account for his misfortunes, were it not that his penitentiary experience occurred before he made his wild and reckless plunges Into matrimony.

The grand lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of New Mexico will meet In this city on Monday, October 20. The local Masonic bodies are making preparations to entertain the members of the grand lodge in a suitable manner. There are 247 convicts In the territorial penitentiary today. They are kept very busy, the manufacturing of brick being the principal occupation. The health of the inmates of the Institution' is first class.

In the absence of the pastor, Rev. W. Hayes Moore, the pulpit of the Presbyterian church will be filled next Sunday morning by Rev. R. M.

Craig, of Albuquerque, and in the evening by Dr. H. C. Thompson, also of Albuquerque. The Lemns' Brewing company, of which Henry Krlck is agent, will con struct a cold storage house and en large its present facilities for storing the products of the company.

Its buildings are located on the south aide and the new store house will be com' pleted "uefore this summer is over. Mrs. Adams, of Jamestown, N. Bister of H. Tew Warner, who has been here for a week on a visit to her broth er and his wife, left this morning with Mr.

and Mrs. C. C. Rosewater, of Omaha, who were here alao on a visit to Mr. and Mrs.

Warner. She goes with them to Omaha and thence to her home at Jamestown, N. Today, thirty-nine years ago, Quan-trell's raid and massacre at Lawrence, took place. Mrs. Mugler, of this city, was then a resident of that town and most vividly remembers the awful occurrences of the burning of the town and of the massacre of about 200 of Its citizens.

Her residence and property were also burned and the family lost all It possessed. Mr. Mugler was one of the citizens of that town who was caught by the raiders and compelled to apply the torch to his own dwelling He managed to escape and hide corn field for a couple of days. Mrs, Mugler is of the opinion that she is the only person, certainly In Sania Fe, and probalily in New Mexico, who was an eye witness to that memorable- occasion. here to live, he having secured a position at the smelter.

A. Young has severed his connection with the smelter company, and Is busily engaged doing carpenter work in his shop on Bridge street. F. Wesley, of Mindon, has taken up his residence in town for the present with the hope of benefiting his health in this climate. Some of our citizens have been fol lowing the very dangerous practice of fast riding through the streets lately.

This is against the law and they should remember that they are liable to prosecution for violating a city ordinance as well as damages for any Injury that might result from their action. We are informed by a member of the school board that the Cerrlllos school will open October 1. Prof. A. J.

Wall, of Havlland, has been engaged as principal, whllo Miss Burta Rogers and Flavio taught here last year, will have charge of the primary and Spanish departments. Professor Wall is a graduate of the Kansas university and has had several years' ex perience as a teacher with marked success and Is highly recommended for the place. A Necessary Precaution.
