"Although the price freeze doubtless affected earnings during the second half of June," the letter says, "enough profit had been recorded through April and May to give the quarter as a whole a very solid appearance." All industry after-tax corporate profits rose 29 per cent in the first quarter compared with the same period of 1972 and a similar increase is anticipated for the second quarter of this year, it adds. In recent years the wise investor has tried to determine where the big money was going in order to buy early "before the massive impact of institutional purchasing moved prices up," says Drexel Burnham & Co. During the past two years institutional buying on the part of banks and insurance companies has been concentrated on glamor growth stocks, the firm says. "In view of currently unsettled conditions, these institutions are likely to continue a policy of concentration in these glamorous, primarily consumer goods stocks largely unrelated to the economy," it adds. Merkin & Co., Inc. says Wall Street's current rally is nothing more than "another attempt on the part of the bulls to anticipate the beginning of a new bull market." The firm advises investors to sell on the rally since "this advance seems destined to fizzle out like the others, insofar as there has been insufficient improvement in the majority of technical indicators." It says most stocks still are vulnerable despite their sharp losses. "During market swings since 1965 bonds increased at an annual rate about equal to that of stocks in bull markets and declined at an annual rate substantially less than stocks in bear markets," according to Salomon Brothers.
