Thompson and family, who have been "doing the Centennial," arrived at their home in this city by the "Elder." The police of this city made 130 arrests during the mouth of September. OftheseCS were catalogued as "druuk and disorderly." Dr. W. Weatherford, of this cily, was the first to pitch his family teut on the State Fair Grounds this year. He and his family have been camping at Soda-ville during the summer.

Col. AV. H. Smallwood, of Vancouver, addressed the Hayes and Wheeler Club on SaturdayeveniiiK at their ueadquart ers at Oro Fino Hall. The meeting was largely attended and the address highly appreciated.

Governor Grover addressed the Tilden and Hendricks Reform Club on Saturday evening in front of the Cosmopolitan hotel. The Governor is a fluent and forcible speaker, and his remarks were frequently applauded by the faithful who compose the "Reform brigade." Hon. 51. C. George, Senator from this county, was summoned by telegraph to Seattle a few days since by the met ancholv tidincs of ttie death of his vounirest child, a bright little daughter aced 13 months.

The sympathies of many friends attend the bereaved parents. An unknown man committed suicide by drowning in the river opposite theO. S. N. Company's wharf on Friday evening.

A coroner's inquest elicited nothing relative to the name, occupation, or home of deceased, and on Sunday his remains were conveyed to "Potter's Field." In response to two invitations, one from the Hayes and Wheeler club, and the other from several hundred promi nent citizens of this city and vicinity, Senator, Mitchell appeared at Oro Fino Jiall on Tuesday evening, ana addressed adensely crowded house on the political issues of the day. His remarks were listened to with profound respect and attention, and frequently greeted with nroionired applause, lhe speech was logical, earnest, and eloquent, and com nianded the respectful consideration of his political opponents, and ttie eutuu- siastic admiration ot Ins triends. Montgomery Queen's circus, which was so elegautly and elaborately billed in this city, cave three evening per formances and two matinees last week, and also a performance on Monday evening, all of which were largely attended, though not more so than the excellence of the performance merited. From commencement to closing, there were startling and daring equestrian ism, marvelous physical teats, graceful tumbling, neat trapeze acts, and new jokes by that necessary nuisance, the clown. The menngerie in connection with the circus contains a fine collection of rare animals and birds.

5Iauy doubted that 3Ir. Queen would display all the animals advertised, but their doubts vanished on entering thecauvas 5Ir. Queen's success as a showman may be accouuted for by the facts that he engages the best talent to be had, performs what he advertises, understands the value of printers' ink, and that his attaches are gentlemanly and courteous. The company will he at East Portland this (Friday) evening, at Oregon City to-morrow night, and at the State Fair all next week. REASON YS.

But when it rules in the love of alarming illness of the Pope. liberty, making it to our best interests to educate the people in humanity and in reverence for the rights of the humblest individual that makes up our numbers, then we bail it as a benison from heaven. This same public opinion has ever been unfortunately prone to be governed by the omnipotence of wealth, by the mountainous odds of majorities, by the power of the pulpit, and last, but not least, by time-honored institutions, of which human slavery was one, and, hideous monster that it was, it claimed a Divine origin. Thera have been stagnant times when even a great mind anchored in error might sway the slow-moving current of society, but such an era is not ours. Instead of the day of armed men clad in steel, devas tating nations in search of sacred relics of worship, we are in the midst of thinking people, and God never endowed a single man with so heavy a brain that it could for a moment compare or compete with the accumulated intellect of the masses.

The days of hero worship are crumbling away with the worship of time-honored institutions. For two hundred years the negro on the South ern plantation wore bis chains in meek aud quiet submission; but at length the very air he breathed became instinct with liberty, and the supposed Divine institution of slavery was doomed from that very hour. What, then, signified Dred Scott decisions and fugitive slave bills? The soul of humanity is more potent than human enactments written ou parchment, though that parchment has stood for a million of years as a guide; and now, with scarred feet but hopeful heart, the trembling slave marches toward the common goal selfhood and freedom.
