ferreting out obscure but well-made movies and boasting them to at least a modest level of box-office success His strategy using small Intimate theaters with low overhead coats Finley's first notable success in this vein was King of Hearts a charming poignant and all-but-ignored antiwar movie starring Alan Bates He bought the distribution rights nurtured it in one of his Seattle houses and won an appreciative following for the movie that spread elsewhere More recently Finley did the same thing with The Stunt Man a brilliantly clever movie that was going nowhere until he picked it up Eventually Stunt Man won national critical notice if not commercial success outside Seattle Unfortunately such films have rarely done well in Tacoma The usual explanation is that Tacoma is too small and too much
