Her older brother Jeff, who got his sister to deliver the newspapers while he played football, said the dog has a history of nastiness. "The dog that bit her this morning always used to nip at my feet," he said. However, Patricia had delivered papers to the house before and hadn't been challenged by the dog. "He would ignore you he wouldn't do nothing to you," she said.But this day it was a different story. "The dog jumped up and grabbed her and she turned around and her face was full of blood," said her friend.

The two young girls rushed a block to the Pirrie house to get help for the nasty wound. Pirrie's mother was still sleeping and was jolted out of her sleep by the sight of her blood-soaked daughter. But she said she was expecting something like that. "I don't know if it's mother's instinct or something but I knew something was going to happen to her," the elder Pirrie said. The mother borrowed a friend's truck and rushed her daughter down to the hospital, where she received several stitches to close the wound.
