inspection of the Oakland Police 106th Recruit School when Lt Mike Wilson commander of the vice squad wel comed his daughter Patty to the ranks Her graduation marks the first time in the 130 year history that a father and daughter have been on the force at the same time Departmental brass noting the historic sig nificance broke tradition and let Wilson join the inspection team and give his 22 year old daugh ter the once over Before the ceremony a beaming Wilson said he knew nothing about his daughter joining the department until a background investigator asked him about her several months ago came as a the 18 year veteran said "I knew she was going into law enforce 5 ment but I thought it would be in Sonoma County where she went to school She had come down here and ridden with Some of our women officers and I knew they impressed her I guess it was that and the fact I have had a pretty good career Patty Wilson who attended Santa Rosa Jun ior College said she did not start out to be a police officer: She said she was taking other courses in college and one day decided to sit in on a law enforcement class think it would be a good said Lt JWilson paternal instinct would come to His could regain composure Eastbay colleges take part in space teleconferences By Lester On Tribuna Staff Writer Drunk driver in fatal crash draws 6 years Communications satellites that rotate with the earth are giving community colleges in the East bay the capability of holding or participating in conferences without the necessity of getting on a plane called the teleconference and involves using one of the satellites to relay television sig nals to any number of receiving points in the country Laney College in Oakland was one of 51 sites in the country on the receiving end of a live Educate the teleconfer ence from Detroit on Nov 10 A consortium of higher educa tion institutions labor unions and other groups based in the Detroit area sought to acquaint an audience of Bay Area educa tors Nov 17 Verle Waters assistant dean of instruction in health and sci By Carol Brydolf Tribune Staff Writer The first person in Alameda County to be slapped with a mur der Charge for a fatal drunken driving accident has pleaded guilty to reduced charges of felo ny drunken driving and volun tary manslaughter Duane Leroy Yoder a 46 year old used car salesman from San Jose entered his plea Wednesday and was sentenced to six years in state prison by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Richard Haugner Yoder was arrested after he slammed his car into the back of the automobile driven by 34 year old Barbara Bascherini of Walnut Creek on Interstate 680 on Sept 9 1981 Bascherini was killed She was the daughter of a California Highway Patrol officer and the step daughter of an executive manager of the National Safety Institute who had conducted sta tistical studies of drunken driv ing fatalities Yoder who was driving with out a valid license had been con victed of drunken driving seven times in the five years preceding the fatal crash He was the first drunken driv er in the county to be charged under provisions of a recent Cali fornia Supreme Court decision that allows prosecutors to charge such inebriates with murder Deputy District Attorney Ken Burr said Yoder pleaded guilty to the lesser charge to avoid trial for second degree murder says now he never wants to get near another Burr said Burr said he offered Yoder the chance to avoid a murder trial because the defendent: had been arraigned twice on the lesser ve hicular manslaughter charges and might argue that the Su preme Court ruling had been im properly and retroactively ap plied to his case ences says Ohlone nursing stu dents are placed in the precep torship program for four weeks during their final quarter This means a staff nurse is assigned to work with the stu dent on a one to one relationship for 40 hours a week to help ease his or her transition as their training ends The program Waters says has resulted in higher levels of job satisfaction and a lower turn over These findings will be broadcast to 20 or more sites next June to an audience of some 1000 to 1400 nursing edu cators Waters says former nursing information about this Work furlough term given in death By Lance Williams Tribune Staff Writer A remont warehouseman who denied beating a 17 month old boy to death but who accept ed responsibility for the killing anyway is facing a one year term in the work fur lough program Richard Egan 41 pleaded no contest to the crime of voluntary manslaughter for the Jan 19 1981 killing of Manuel Tse and was sentenced to one year in county jail for the crime riday But Alameda County Superior Court Judge Mark Eaton re leased Egan without bail so he could apply to the work furlough program which would allow him to spend nights and weekends in jail while keeping his job Prosecutor Robert Platt pro tested the sentence and urged the judge to send Egan to prison Manuel was the son of Egan's girlfriend According to court records on the day of the killing the mother left the child with Egan When she returned she fpund the baby in convulsions He died shortly that Dr Paul Hermann a pathologist said the child died from being punched in the head The body showed bruis es from earlier beatings as well Hermann said Egan denied beating the child In a statement ito his probation officer he implied the mother was responsible for in flicting the fatal injuries He told doctors at the state prison at Vacaville where he was sent for a'one month diag nostic study that he chose to plead no contest because he feared being found guilty of mur der if the case went to trial According to the prosecutor the mother denied abusing the boy She accused Egan of show ing his dislike for the child who was of Asian heritage by calling him BRIES Polish hams stolen in SAN RANCISCO More than 20000 pounds of Polish ham valued at $50000 have been stolen from a Potrero warehouse along with two delivery trucks police
