Call IS Lester Cole, one of the Hollywood Ten, dies Los Angeles Times Lester Cole, an unreconstructed Socialist who watched a successful screenwriting career vanish in a political cloud when he became one of the Hollywood Ten in the postwar Red-scare era, died Thursday of a heart attack. was 81 and the third member of the once-despised group of writers and directors to die this year. With his death from a heart attack at the University of California Medical Center in San Obituaries Sumner died Wednesday. Mr. Schlapkohl, a retired farmer, was born in Blair, and moved to Sumner from Graham 16 years ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Codding of Sumner and Orphia Real of Modesto, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sumner-Voiles Funeral Chapel is in charge. William Schlapkohl William Schlapkohl, 87, of Orville Torgeson Orville H. Torgeson, 65, who died Tuesday, was the owner of Brookdale Lumber Co. and Brookdale Homes in Parkland.

Mr. Torgeson, who also was a commercial fisherman, was born in Alberta and moved to Tacoma in 1939 from Pelican Rapids, Minn. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Torgeson was named Boss of the Year by the American Business Women.

He was a member of the Lumberman's Association and the Western Building Materials and Homebuilder's associations. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion, Parkland Post, the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. Survivors include his wife, Janice; three daughters, Jan Meyer of Tacoma, Kathie McLean of Lotus, and Andrea Tolbert of Rose Hill, a son, Ronald of Tacoma; a sister, Doris Gressel of Portland, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Fir Lane Funeral Home is in charge. Stephen Harkins neral Home is in charge.

John Hendershott Stephen A. Harkins, 27, who died Sunday, was a lifelong Tacoma resident and a truck driver for the Ed Hume Co. Mr. Harkins was a member of Visitation Catholic Church and a graduate of Clover Park High School and L.H. Bates VocationalTechnical Institute.

Surviving are his parents, Dan and Verna Harkins of Tacoma; a sister, Karen Cowgill of Spokane; and two brothers, Michael of Portland, and Douglas of Tacoma. Gaffney-Cassedy and Allen Fu- John T. Hendershott, 92, a resident of Tacoma the past 85 years, died Thursday. Mr. Hendershott, a retired cabinet maker, was born in Plainview, Neb.

He was a Lutheran. Survivors include his wife, Hildur; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Carscallen of Portland, Helen Williams of Sequim and Hazel Sherwood of Seattle; and a sister, Flora Ripley of Vallejo, Calif. Robert (Vera) Woodman, 75, of Sumner died Thursday. Mrs. Woodman was born in Illinois and resided in Sumner for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sumner and a 40-year member of the Guiding Star Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Besides her husband, survivors Keith Keith F.

Livermore, 71, of Orting died Thursday. Born in Seattle, Mr. Livermore moved to Orting from Sumner last year. He was an Army veteran of World War II. A machinist for the Boeing Co.

for 30 years before he retired, Mr. Livermore worked on the lunar rover at the Boeing Space Center in Kent. William William F. Knowles, 37, of Tacoma died Wednesday. Mr.

Knowles, an Army sergeant first class, worked as a ground control approach supervisor. He was born in Seattle and moved to Tacoma three years ago. He was a Catholic. But his refusal to cooperate with the House committee and his subsequent imprisonment and fine destroyed him professionally and financially. As recently as 1965 he was forced to use the synonym "Gerald L.C. Copley" when he adapted Joy Adamson's book Born Free for film.
