UNIFAX being held captive by the Viet Cong for 18 Canadian Officers Freed by Viet Cong SAIGON (UPI) - Two Canadian officers freed after 18 days as captives of the Viet Cong said today they were captured because the Communists thought they were American spies. Capt. Ian Patten, 31, and •Fletcher Thomson, 25, were released Sunday along with two captured South Vietnamese drivers. They appeared healthy and fit. They were flown by helicopter to Saigon and described their experiences at a news conference today. "We were told we were recognized as Americans on an intelligence mission," Patten said. "They ., could not distinguish us from Americans." The two officers are members of the peace-keeping International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) and were captured June 28 in an area 35 miles east of Saigon that is claimed by both the Viet Cong and the South Vietnamese government. The Viet Cong did not acknowledge they wvre holding the men until last Monday. Patten said he and Thomson were driving along a road when they saw three Viet Cong guerrillas talking to a group of rubber plantation workers. "I approached them and identified myself and a pistol'was put to my head," Patten said. Both men appeared in good spirits despite an ordeal they said included forced marches with their arms bound to their sides and nooses around their necks. Canada already has announced it will withdraw from the • peace-keeping body on July 31 because it feels the organization is ineffective. Other members are Poland. Hungary and Indonesia. 1 "On the .whole," Patten said, "we were treated humanely, with respect. There were certain personalities who did at times make life uncomfortable. We were bound a number of times during the marches; we had no sleep at other times." "The; PRG (Viet Cong) provided us with what they had," he said. Field reports said heavy fighting raged 10 miles southwest of Phnom Penh* along Highway 3. Government forces there were reported trying to halt rebel advances with armored oars, artillery and American air strikes.
