FRIDAY APRIL 27, 1877. HOMEJEWS. Hou. O. N.

Detiny bas resinned the office of Collector of Internal Revenue for this district. Work at the fisheries bas been resumed, and various points on the Lower Columbia present scenes of bustling activity. MMIe lima De Murska, the "Hungarian Nightengale," has been warbling operatic melodies at New Market Theater this week. "Suicides, their cause anil prevention" was the subject of a discourseby Rev. Dr.

Liudsley at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening. Rev. S. C. Adams and wife returned to this city by the "Ajax," after an absence of three years.

They wiil be welcomed by many old-time friends. The Howe Sewlnc Machiue Company have removed their olllce to their large store-room in Beck's building, on Second street. Remember the Howe is the pioneer of all. The funeral of the late Dr. Wilcos took place on Friday and was largely attended.

His remains were consigned to the grave according to the beautiful und impressive burial rites of Free Masonry. It is neither dillicult nor expensive for men and boys to be well -aud fashionably dressed, iSt they have only to call at Fishel Roberts, where the problem of being well-dressed will be solved for tbem. Any dairyman, farmer, or farmer's wife who desires to purchuse a "Granger unuru" win do well to call at this olllce or communicate with us bv letter. Fresh butter at ruling prices will be laKen in payment. Dr.

Paul M. Brenan, of Kan Francisco. will deliver a course of five lectures at Masonic Hall, commencing Tuesday eveuiug, May 1st. The lecturer comes well recommended, and speaks upon themes that will iuterest the multitude. Lone Fir Cemetery is being tastefully improved by the sexton, Mr.

L. Kier-uan. The affection that lingers about the memory of the departed cau be shown in no more fitting way than by adorning their last resting-place with flowers. The annual catalogue of Kuann. Bur- reil Co.

furnishes cuts aud prices of larmiug implements ot the most reliable character. This firm furnishes the very best of the various kinds of machinery in which they deal, and merits the immense and constantly increasing patronage which they receive throughout the State. We call special attention to the advertisement of Dr. Warner's Health Corset. We will send one coov of the New Northwest oue year aud one of inese (jorsels post-paid to auy address on the receipt of $4 00.

We cordially recommend the article to our lady friends, and feel confident they will appreciate them after a very short trial. a From the report of County School Superintendent J. J. Browne, we find that there are in the county 4,993 children of sciiool age. Of this number, there were enrolled in the public schools 3,395, and in the private schools, 615; number not attending any school, 1,096.

Last year the average attendance was 1,746, while it has now risen to 2,018, being an increase during the year of 272. Mr. Rider, so long associated with the "Aurora Restauraut," has disposed of his iuterest iu that popular eating-house, and is fitting up rooms for an elegant: and commodious restauraut on the corner of Washington and Second streets. He has spared neither care uor mouey to render the place comfortable aud attractive, and hopes to be ready to dispense food to the hungry on or about the first of May. The Bee tells of a young woman aged 20 years who has entered a house of ill-fame iu tills city to escape from the brutalities of a drunken husband.

This monster, she alleges, had at one time dragged her half a mile by the hair of her head, and was in the habit of abusing her inhumanly. She came from Washington Territory and refused to leave her retreat, even at the earnest solicitations of her mother. To such dire straits cau outraged humanity be driven. The manufacturers of patent stone are working busily at their bonanza, as the discovery is likely to prove, manufacturing everything from pavements to hearthstones, and from monuments to match-safes.

Mr. Watson has taken hold of it with his accustomed business energy, and is sure to be successful. The most beautiful pavements iu the city are those made of this manufactured stone, and their durahiliiv Is as their beauty and utility. A correspondent of the Vancouver In dependent thus discourses upon the women in the granges: Tile Granfrf an nmiinUaCm. cially adapted to the social needs of farmers. It brings them and their wives ana cuiidreu Into closer relationship, and enables them to know more of each other, more of their mutual hopes, plans and prospects. And herein are the women invaluable to our order. Their services in the Grange could not well be dispensed with.

To Hivoaf. tt.o order of its woman feature would be to uetract greatly from its usefulness and the enjoyment of its meetings. Here, as elsewhere, woman's nnumu in tmiio pensablelu the inculcation of good morals and religious principles. Happily the Grange affords an opportunity for woman's partial relief from that seclusion of home and the kitchen, which is ou unci, uesirucuve ot iiiguer ambitions and brighter hopes. jror how much better is one continually darkened with moody silence or grievous wrangling.

The Grange may be made the nursery of the social home, aud all should say God speed the institution that is calculated generally to exercise so healthful an influence, and especially to assist in the liberation of the minds of women. The Grange is not known destinctively as a "woman's rights" association, yet herein women have their rights; they are admitted to full membership, aud this is one of the most worthy features. The customs, morals, and social status of the Grange depend largely upon the women. Unsolicited Testimony. Fairfield, April 28.

1864. Gentlemen Seeing numerous certificates In the 'Maine Farmer," endorsing the merits of the Great Long Remedy, Wistar's Balsam or Wild Cheeky, I am induced and I take great pleasure in giving publicity to the great cure it accomplished In my iamily in the year 1856. Soring the summer oi that year my son, Henry A. Archer, now postmaster in this place, was attacked with spitting of blood, cough, weak ness of lungs, and general debility, so much so that oar family physician declared him to have a "seated consumption." He was onder medical treatment lor a number of months, lAt received no benefit from it. At length, from the solicitation of himself and others, I was Induced to purchase one bottle of Wis-tar's Balsam of Wild Chebhy, which bene fited him so much I obtained another, which in a short time restored him to his usual state ot 'health.

I can safely recommend this rem edy toothers In like condition, for it ls.Ithink, all It purports to be the Great Lung Remedy for the times 1 The a'Kve statement, gentlemen, Is ray vol nntary offering to you in favor of your Balsam and is at yoor disposal. A.tig;ail Scott Dnniway, Editor "New Northwest," Portland, Oregon, WITH BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS, AND ELEGANTLY BOUND. A new epic, from a vigorous and skillful pen, on a subject which occupies a large place in the social discussions of the day. The snbject is taken from Mr. Whittler's short narrative of "David Matson," with which the reader Is probably familiar. David Matson, a Merrimac sailor, was captured by the Aigerines (during one of his voyages) and sold into slavery.

After many years he obtained release and was on his way to the home of his boyhood, when he fell in with his old employer, who informed him that his wife, believing him dead, had remarried, and, stunned by his trouble, he surrendered all claim as husband and father to the man who had stepped into his place, and departed. Mrs. Dunlway has found a theme In this story with which her heart beats In warmest sympathy, and her lines flow 6n In the smooth cadence indicative ofthe fullcstaccord. She pictures the gentle, tender, trostfol Anna and the wily, covetous Pelatlah In vivid colors; and how years of poverty and longing, and the cries of the hnn gry boys, compelled poor Anna to yield to Pelatlah's Importunity, "Rise, rejoice, My poor, unmated dove," said he, And look henceforth for love to me." A little further on he says: Become my wife and you shall be Made happy through prosperity," While, if she persists in declining his advances, wolf-like, he threatens to abandon her to starvation and cold. And this Pelatlah was a "deacon," In exhortations deep and loud." The wanderings of David, his captivity, release, hapless interview with Pelatlah, discovery ot Anna's second wifehood, and his sad going back to Algeria, are all told so pathetically that our leellngs aie deeply enlisted.

No one, with any true sentiment, can read the poem without being thorooglily stirred. The illustrations are in admirable keeping with the passages they are designed to portray, and a fine engraving of the author is a fitting frontispiece. The subject spirit, fire and passion of the poem should give it an extensive reading, aside from the interest wnich the literary reputation ofthe author most awaken in It. As a specimen of book-making the volume is certainly beautiful, and would adorn any center-table. We-know ot no work so well adapted as a present.
