Ready to do battle The Bloomington-Normal Airport Authority demonstrated its new, long-awaited aircraft rescue and fire truck yesterday. Built in Oshkosh, by Oshkosh Truck the vehicle cost $320,000. Federal money will pay 90 percent, and 10 percent will be paid with local funds. DEATHS Central Illinois Ethel Meredith FARMER CITY The funeral of Ethel Louise Meredith, 87, of Vidor, Texas, and formerly of Farmer City, will be at 3 p.m.

Saturday at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, Farmer City. The Rev. James R. Poe will officiate. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. She died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday July 17, 1990) at Baptist Hospital, Beaumont, Texas. She was born May 4, 1903, near Mansfield, a daughter of James and Annie Webb Bcazly.

She married Ernest Meredith on June 23, 1927, in Mansfield. He died June 20, 1984. Surviving are two sons, Glenn, Vidor, Texas, and the Rev. Robert Unionville, a daughter, Mariam J. Coleman, Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; two ttepgrandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

A grandson preceded her in death. Mrs. Meredith taught elementary school for two years and was secretary for Meredith Real Estate Business in Farmer City. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Vidor. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, Farmer City, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Ida B. Caplinger LINCOLN Ida Beatrice Cap-linger, 78, of Lincoln died at 8:48 p.m. Wednesday (July 18, 1990) at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Lincoln. Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln, the Revs.

Oscar Owens and Clyde Shreve officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. She was born Sept 21, 1911, at Blandensville, a daughter of Roy C.

and Opha Goff Humberd. She married Milford Caplinger on Nov. 7, 1926, in Lincoln. He died Jan. 19, 1962.

Survivors include five sons, Mil-ford R. and Victor, both of Portage, Robert, Carlinville; John, Springfield; and William, Springfield, a daughter, Jean Warren, Hobart, three sisters, Ruth Kucik and Louise Goeken, both of Hopedale; and Barbara Higdon, Delavan; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Caplinger was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle and the Moose Lodge Auxiliary, both in Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St Mark's Lutheran Church, Washington, the Rev. Dean Beckwith officiating. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, Washington.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mason-White Funeral Home, Washington, and one hour before the service Saturday at the church. He was born March 10, 1894, In Washington Township, a son of Adam and Caroline Glabe Oetzel. He married Estella Hess Feb. 16, 1921, In Washington.

She died Aug. 20, 1982. are two daughters, Doris Grove, Washington, and Shirley Folkes, Elkhart; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers, five sisters and one great-grandson. A World War I Army veteran, Mr.

Oetzel was a member of the Farm Bureau, St. Mark's Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 100 of Washington. Memorials may be made to his church. Bloomington-Normal Thomas Eddy The funeral of Thomas L. Eddy, 69, of 720 Normal Normal, a job employment counselor, will be at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday at Stubble-field Funeral Home, Normal. The Rev. Craig Herr will officiate. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.

and Luella Rawding Eddy. He married Annerose Fallon Dec. 6, 1947, in Bloomington. She died July 7, 1961. Survivors include three sons, Thomas New Lenox; Jack, at home; and William Coshocton, Ohio; one daughter, Barbara Klomps, Mascoutah; three brothers, Donald, 219 Ivanhoe Way, Bloomington; David, Decatur; and Daniel, St Louis; two sisters, Dorothy Lake, 1017 S.

Mercer Bloomington, and Mildred Arendt, 209 Tanner St, Bloomington; and six grandchildren. Mr. Eddy had been a job employment counselor for United Private Industry Council. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Memorials may be made to St Joseph Medical Center Oncology Department Joseph F.

Murphy Joseph F. Murphy, 65, of 29 Third Greenwood Mobile Home Park, Bloomington, a retired salesman, died at 2:43 p.m. yester AROUN Peoria Air National Guard to get new planes PEORIA Sen. Alan Dixon, has announced that the Air Force is replacing its fleet of 18 A-37As in the Air National Guard at the Greater Peoria Regional Airport with 18 F-16As, adding 375 new personnel and an additional $2 million in military construction. Dixon says the new F-16As will arrive in the fall of 1992.

Emerson St; Mary Payne, 2 Mobil-Land Mobile Home Park; and June Basham, 40 Illinois St, Greenwood Mobile Home Park, all of Bloomington; a brother, Paul Penn, 912 E. Walnut St, Bloomington; a stepbrother, Henry Nelson, R.R.

4, Bloomington; two sisters, Irene Alvis, 2 Curtis Court, Normal, and Mildred Joan Young, Sarasota, 14 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters. Mr. Penn was the oldest working member of Laborers Local 362 in Bloomington at the time of his death. He was a member of the Local for 43 years.

He had worked for Rowe Construction Bloomington, for the last 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion Louis E. Davis Post 56 in Bloomington. Memorials may be made to St Jude Children's Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. R.

Irene Johnson R. Irene Johnson, 84, formerly of 202 S. Roosevelt Apt 903, Bloomington, a retired waitress and production worker and active church worker, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday (July 18, 1990) at Americana Healthcare Center, Normal, where she had lived about one month. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Saturday at Park United Methodist R. Irene Church, Bloom- Johnson ington, the Rev. Gary Ford officiating. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

today at Beck Memorial Home, Bloomington. Miss Johnson was born June 28, 1906, at California, a daughter of Robert A. Johnson Sr. and Pearle A. Mcgirk Johnson.

Survivors include one brother, Robert A. Johnson 1120 E. Olive St, Bloomington. One brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Miss Johnson, who graduated from Bloomington High School, was a waitress at the Federal Cafe and Biasi's Drug Store, both in Bloomington.

Later, she was a production worker for Shirk Products Inc. Beer Nuts, Bloomington. From 1971 to 1981, Miss Johnson cared for the late Julia Green Scott Vrooman. A member of Park United Methodist Church for 53 years, Miss Johnson was a member and twice president of the Evening Circle of the church. She was a member of the Council Board and served on the Ecumenical and Mission committees of the council.

She was a member of the KD and Crusaders Sunday school classes of the church. Miss Johnson also was a volun- teer for the Western Avenue Peace Meal Program; a member of the Golden Age Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. Memorials may be made to her church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Janiffer Sharp Janiffer Sharp, 33, of 716 W. Market St, Bloomington, died at 9:28 a.m.

Wednesday (July 18, 1990) in the emergency room of Brokaw Hospital, Normal. McLean County Coroner William T. Anderson said cause of death is undetermined. Additional tests will be conducted. Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington, is in charge of arrangements.

El Paso drops open lunch rule EL PASO Because of reports the school board has received that students have been drinking during the noon hour, members decided last night to close the campus for the upcoming school year. An open campus was started last fall on a trial basis. The board stressed its decision was based on the health and safety concerns of students returning to school after drinking. Board members said they would consider a change at any time. The board also accepted staff resignations from Gary Ballard, high school math teacher, and Robin Wall, high school health and driver education teacher.

The board has received 40 applications so far for the math position and will begin interviews today. B-N man charged with sexual abuse A 24-year-old Bloomington man who police said had sexual contact with a 15-year-old Bloomington girl earlier this year was charged yesterday with aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Thomas E. Hafley, 226 Southgate Estates, Bloomington, appeared in McLean County Circuit Court yesterday. After his appearance, Hafley posted $500 to appear in court again Aug.

A graduate of Marian College and a first-year teacher, he also will be the assistant football coach. Royce Womack will be the girls' physical education instructor. Ms.

Womack is currently teaching at Centurion School in Hanna City. She also will be the girls' basketball and girls' softball head coach. Ms. Womack has 11 years' teaching experience. Mike Hatfield, presently at Hersher School near Kankakee, will teach boys' physical education and high school math.

With nine years experience, he also will be football and baseball head coach. Kennedy St, Normal; one brother, John Murphy, Dallas; two sisters, Mari Weaver, Denver, and Irene Scott, 122 Greenwood Bloomington; and one grandson. Mr. Murphy was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge. He was a World War II Army veteran. He retired in 1987 after 35 years as a salesman with Liquor Decatur.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. William F. Penn William F. Penn, 67, of 1711 W. Indiana Bloomington, died at 11:15 a.m.

Burial Harley King ROANOKE The funeral of Harley G. King, 64, of Roanoke will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Metamora Mennonite Church, the Rev. Roger Hochstetler officiating. Burial will be in Roanoke Mennonite' Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Rem-mert Funeral Home, Roanoke, and an hour before the service Sunday at the church. Mr. King died of a heart attack at 4:31 p.m.

Wednesday (July 18, 1990) at Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, where he had been admitted earlier. He was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Chenoa, a son of Joseph and Katie Roggey King. He married Betty J. Keller on Dec.

5, 1945, in Minonk. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Harley G. Perrysburg, Ohio, and Mark Lebanon, four daughters, Bonnie Villarreal, Laredo, Texas; Linda A. King, Roanoke; Anita R.

King, Washington; and Joy Willoughby, Austin, Texas; four brothers, Lloyd, LaJ-eunta, Harold, Valparaiso, Oliver, Morton; and Joe Gridley; two sisters, Blanche Stutzman, Minonk, and Elaine Schirer, Roanoke; and seven grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death. Mr. King was a general contractor for 33 years. He also owned The Plow auction and antiques store in Washburn since 1974.
