But in 1936, Williams. was on 'the spot Just as the world was turning its collective attention to Germany and the German people. Wftat were his impressions at the time? "Well, I recall when I came back home that people asked me, How did those dirty Nazis treat you? Williams said. "To which I always replied, Well, over there at least we didnt have to ride in the back of the bus. So-although Williams insists that he wasnt very politically minded back in 1936, he had some political, fire in the inner furnace, As a tourist, Williams enjoyed the trip to Germany.

"Actually, we were treated very well by the German people, Williams said. "We were treated the way any individual likes to be treated. "Jessie Owens might have been, snubMg, by Hitler, but he was a hero in the. eyes of the Germans. They followed him around the streets like he was the Pied Piper, Williams does recall one odd practice of the Germans their eagerness to touch the skin of black athletes.

"I guess Germans werent too used to seeing Mack, people, Williams, said. "I think they wanted to see if the black would come-off if they rubbed bur skin. But they were' very friendly. Williams remembers the sea of uniforms that 'was such a conspicuous part of Nazi Germany in the 30s, fait mainly he remembers Owens sprinting and long Jumping his way into history.
