What figured to be an early season Missouri Valley Conference volleyball showdown was reduced to a slowdown by deliberate, yet deadly, Northern Iowa. When it was over, the Panthers had posted a methodical 15-13, 15-10, 15-7 victory Friday night before a crowd of 2,285 at Redbird Arena. "They did exactly what we knew they would do. But they lulled us right into their very slow game," Morgan said after ISU dropped to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference ahead of tonight's 7:30 match against Drake at Redbird Arena. "Our ballhandling and fundamentals are really pathetic right now. When you get into big games, you can't be spending time worrying about fundamentals. You have to be worrying about strategy. Tonight, our team just showed a total lack of discipline." As a result, ISU's 11-match home win streak came crashing down, as well as a 13-match home victory string against Valley competition. Meanwhile, Coach Iradge Ahrabi-Fard's Northern Iowa squad won its 19th straight regular-season conference match to improve to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Valley. The preseason league favorites rallied from deficits of 10-8 in Game 1 and 0-5 in Game 2. Led by the Galer twins Kara and Kate Northern Iowa never trailed in Game 3 after jumping to a 5-0 lead. Setter Kara Galer, last year's Missouri Valley Most Valuable Player, had nine kills, five blocks, 32 assists and 14 digs. Outside hitter Kate Galer, who joined her sister on the all-conference team last year, added 18 kills and 10 digs. "Our team came from behind in the first game and fought well, and that has been the character of this team," Ahrabi-Fard said. "I think that (the first game) set the tone. Our blocking also came through." Junior middle blocker Kate Marovich had eight of Northern Iowa's 25 blocks. The Panthers also outhit the Redbirds, .240 to .134. "With all due respect to Northern Iowa, it was nothing they did," said ISU junior ouside hitter Patti Hoppa. "We're just making poor decisions and stupid mistakes." emor tries AT CRESTWICKE Sept. 26-30 Crestwicke Country Club $100,000 PURSE Look on the links for 1" Bill Hall Jim Stefanich Larry Ringer Ralph Terry & more great goiters!
