1 $12 WINNIPEG SUN I MONDAY NOVEMBER 21 2005 Automotive TIP OF THE WEEK brought to you by PROFESSIONALS HOWTO SAVE MONEY ON FUEL DURING HOLIDAY TRAVEL The holidays are here and, as such, they require that you spend more time traveling by car to visit friends and relatives, attend various parties and, of course, do last-minute shopping for food and gifts. With gas prices continuing to rise, you may be worried about going over budget and spending much more on fuel than you originally intended to spend this holiday season. It does little good worrying about whether fuel prices will go up or down. What you should focus on, instead, are things you can control, like increasing fuel efficiency, which can save you money in fuel costs, especially at a time when you'll be using your car more often than usual. Here are some ideas on how you can improve your vehicle's fuel efficiency: Pay attention to how you drive.

Don't exceed highway speed limits. Use moderate-to-easy acceleration. Gas mileage is negatively affected by fast acceleration and fast deceleration. Use cruise control on highway trips. Maintaining a constant speed helps reduce fuel consumption.

Engine maintenance. Maintain a properly tuned engine. Dirty spark plugs do not create the maximum spark and cause reduced horsepower and increased emissions. Synthetic lubricants. Switch to synthetic motor oil and drivetrain lubricants.

Independent tests show savings of two to five percent when using AMSOIL synthetic motor oils, gear lubes and ATFs. Air filter. Install clean air filter as needed. To get optimal efficiency from your engine, it has to breathe. Aerodynamics.

Avoid use of the roof rack. Reduce aerodynamic drag, and improve your fuel economy by placing items inside the trunk whenever possible. Sunroofs also disturb smooth aerodynamic air flow, and reduce mileage. Tire maintenance. Properly inflate your tires.

Keep tires balanced and rotated regularly. Use radial tires for less friction between tire and road. Keep the front end aligned for better mileage and longer tire life. Excess weight. Pack light, and clean out your trunk.

Every 200 pounds of unnecessary weight shaves one mile per gallon off your gas mileage. You would be surprised how much stuff most people carry around in their trunks that they aren't using. Minimize idling. Idling any longer than a minute wastes gas, and one minute of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine. When possible, avoid drive-thrus.

Idling for as little as 10 minutes while you sit in line can waste five or six miles worth of gas. Limit warm-ups to 30 seconds. Allowing your vehicle 1 to idle excessively wastes gas. Plan and combine your trips. Make a list and do all your holiday shopping once a week.

But to do the trick in a Curling Tour cashspiel that includes most of Manitoba's finest, including trials-bound Jeff Stoughton, is inconceivable. But Valour Road's David Bohn is now the proud papa of the first eightender of his young career. And he did it in a consolation event of all things.

Bohn scored the perfect score against Dauphin's Jim Winfield in the opening end of a consolation semifinal of the Pharmasave Gimli Classic at the Gimli Rec Centre yesterday. Bohn was relegated to the consolation after losing his first two starts. "The weekend started off a little disappointing," Bohn said from Gimli shortly after defeating Dauphin's Greg Todoruk 7-1 in seven ends in the final. "Then it finished off with a once-in-a-lifetime eight-ender." Bohn only had the chance for the big score after Winfield had inadvertently removed his own rock with his last shot. Bohn then needed to hit half a rock and stay.

"If I nose it, I would have given up one," said Bohn, supported by third Taren Gesell, second Dennis Bohn (his twin brother) and A.J. Girardin. Bohn then stole one in the second end and the teams shook hands. Bohn had advanced to the consolation semifinal by default, meaning that it only took him nine ends to win the $500 consolation.
