V. H. Deaver Presents Ills Under-standloic ot the Matter. Euitob The Citizen Among your press despatches from Raleigh the other aay appeared the following W. H.

Dearer ol Ashjyille brings suit against the Southern railway to teat idc legality ol hauling ex Drew on San oayt la North Carolina. The Southern tmuway will baadle no el press, save perishable articles on Sundays until thi. question la settled. The penalty is $500 raco irain in each county through Which the railway runa. It ia said that nnder a literal construction ot the act dead bodkacannot be shipped that da The facta are these: The Southern Railway company had got to be ao no torioua in ita violations of the Sunday taw that the public became nauseated.

"aavita were made and warrants me as a justice ol the peace in ine nrst place, the runflmi? pi freight trains on Sunday. They were iu vuun in two cases lor tnis. True bills were promptly returned. Tbev hare aiso oeen can-vine tons of freieht on express cars on Sunday in violation of law and are held to court in five cafes. I understand that it is true that the company Jus stopped hauling Ireight.

other than live stock and perishable goods, to Ashev ille on Sunday; yet I am reliably informed that the trains haul it by Asheville and return it next day. and are unloading it at every other city in the state as though there wai no Sunday law. As a la breaker the South, rn Railway company is notorious; so anxious to make money they actually cut down their office force at Asheville so that the clerks worked every Sunday in order to bold their jobs and keep up with their work. When this was found out, suits were brought against them for Sunday work and it stopped. Now the employes work till midnight nearly every night.

The road is grinding the very life out of the employes. Again, the road is so narrowly contracted and so full of greed, that it is like palling eve teeth for them to pay an honest debt for loss of goods, or overcharge in freight. I have no doubt that oat people in this city are annually robbed out of $500 in overcharges alone. And if a suit is brought against the road for as small a sum as 50 cents, an appeal ia taken if it goes against the road. In the effjrts of the road to bring odium upon me, and get the p.ople dif gusted wirh the Sunday law, it is said that a dead body could not be hauled on Sunday.

This is absurd. If you want to ship a body, go and get a first class ticket, take your ticket with the body aid ask the road to carry it. It will be done, for the corpse is a passenger and not shipped as freight, and never was. The people will demand a trial of the cases against the road as soon as possible, and if the law is to be set aside the people want to know it. Yours trulv, W.

Trices have Wen reduced, but the quality has steadily depreciated, so that, as a rule, the sale of enameled goods has become neither profitable to the trade nor satisfactory to the customer.
