1 1 THE PANTAGRAPH, Friday, Oct. 24, 1986 C5 Former B-N man gets doctorate Central Illinois Harry P. Lorig COLFAX Harry P. Lorig, 84, of Beach, and formerly of Colfax, died at 4 a.m. yesterday (Oct.

23, 1986) at Los Alamitos Hospital, Los Alamitos, Calif. A memorial Mass will be today in the Catholic Church at Leisure World, Seal Beach, Calif. He was born Nov. 8, 1901, in rural Colfax, a son of John M. and Bertha Hoffman Lorig.

He married Clara Lostrom Oct. 7, 1950, in Riverside, Calif. She survives. Also surviving are two 1 brothers, Peter Arrowsmith, and Henry Colfax; and a sister, Gusta Jaegle, St. Louis, Mo.

Five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Lorig was a member of the Catholic Church of Leisure World, Seal Beach, Calif. Mary L. Butler METAMORA Mary L.

Butler, 81, of 114 S. Niles died at 7 p.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986.) She was taken to the Mason Funeral Home, Metamora. Pearl Schultz MELVIN Pearl M.

Schultz, 82, of Melvin, died at 6:05 a.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986) at Cole Hospital, Champaign. Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lamb-Young Funeral Home, Roberts, the Rev.

Donald P. Kumpf officiating. Burial will be in Melvin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

today at the funeral home. She was born July 20, 1904, in Chatsworth, a daughter of Charles and Zora Belle Davis Peterson. She married Herbert O. Schultz on Dec. 30, 1933, in Melvin.

He died Jan. 14, 1951. Surviving are one son, Ben, Thomasboro, and three grandchildren. Three infant children, three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. She had been a resident of the Melvin area most of her life.

She was a librarian at the Melvin Library for 16 years and also had taught country school several years. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Melvin, and the American Lutheran Church Women. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Kurt Connour LeROY Kurt Jay Connour, 33, of LeRoy, died Friday (Oct.

17, 1986) in California. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Bruce Memorial Home, LeRoy, was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Connour was born Jan.

21, 1953, at Gibson City, a son of William J. and Maverine Hill Connour. Surviving are his father, 905 HillCourt, Bloomington; his mothtop er, Maverine Short, LeRoy; one brother, Kipp, Bloomington; one half brother, Judd Short, LeRoy; six stepbrothers; two stepsisters; and his maternal grandmother, Adabelle Hill, LeRoy. Willard Grimm CLINTON Willard J. Grimm, 84, of 402 N.

Mulberry died at 8:01 last night (Oct. 23, 1986) at Decatur Memorial Hospital. He was taken to Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington. Lulu Crowl MORTON Lulu Crowl, 96, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Morton, died at noon yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986) at the Union Printers Home, Colorado Springs.

She will be brought to LudwigRohrschneider Mortuary, Morton. George Goluba STREATOR George "Duke" Goluba, 67, of 1010 Elliott died at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 22, 1986) at St. Mary's Hospital.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Elias Funeral Home. Burial will be in Russian Orthodox Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. He was born Nov.

20, 1918, in Streator, a son of William and Mary Mihalovich Goluba. He married Anne Louise Keller on March 3, 1967, in Streator. She survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Nancy Brown, Streator; three brothers, Fred and William, both of Streator, and John, Stuart, three grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Mr. Goluba was: welder and was formerly employed by Streator Dependable and Knoedler Mfg. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and a life member of the Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars and Streator Eagles.

John Grebner METAMORA John L. Grebner, 77, of Washington Christian Village, Washington, formerly of Metamora, died at 11:27 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 22, 1986) at Proctor Hospital, Peoria. His funeral will be at 10 a.m.

Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Metamora, Franciscan fathers officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Metamora. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

Alig on Jan. 24, 1933, in St. Mary's of Lourdes Church, Metamora. She died July 6, 1976. Survivors include six daughters, Phyllis Grebner, Peoria; Coletta Jaurez, Waukegan; Janet Ralser, Metamora; June Lichti, Loveland, Victoria Ditsch, Cincinatti, Ohio; and Susan Waggoner, East Peoria; five sons, Russell, Thomas and Marvin, all of Metamora; Gerald, Kewanee; and John Marrietta, one sister, Cecilia Opdycke, Peoria; and 18 grandchildren.

Six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Metamora, and had worked at Hiram Walker Distillery for 26 years before retiring in 1971. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Gary Reynolds METAMORA- Gary L.

Reynolds, 37, of 421 E. Mount Vernon died at 8:50 a.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986) at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mason Funeral Home, Metamora, the Rev. Mike Fry officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Peoria. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sunday at the funeral home. He was born Dec. 12, 1948, in Peoria, a son of Ervin J. and Verle Boken Reynolds. Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Roger Genesee, Idaho, and Scott, Metamora; one sister, Nancy A.

Burr, Thornton, and his maternal grandmother, Jennie Gardner, Metamora. One sister preceded him in death. He was a member of the Christian Union Church, Metamora. He was employed as an ironworker. He was a teacher at Cuba High School, where he also was a coach.

Chris Hoelscher Catherine Humiston PONTIAC Catherine Julia Humiston, 87, of 1011 W. Washington Pontiac, died at 1:52 a.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986) at Saint James Hospital, Pontiac. She had been seriously ill two months.

Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Pontiac, with Monsignor Joseph J. O'Dea officiating. Burial will be in St.

Patrick Cemetery, Ransom. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Duffy Funeral Home, Pontiac, with the rosary at 7 p.m. Mrs. Humiston was born June 1899, in Sunbury Township, Livingston County, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Roach Stevenson.

She married Francis C. Brust on July 21, 1917. He died June 6, 1943. She married Carroll Humiston on Feb. 5, 1951, a at St.

Bernard's Church, Sunbury. He died Aug. 11, 1977. Survivors include two sons, Francis C. Brust Dwight, and John H.

Brust, Lakeland, three daughters, Aletha Sulzberger, LaPlatta, Margaret E. Ransom; and Catherine Hobart, Pontiac; two sisters, Mildred Kime, Dwight, and Irene Coleman, Albuquerque, N.M.; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. A son, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Humiston was educated at Gibbon School in Sunbury.

She owned and operated the Katydid Tavern for many years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, the American Legion Auxiliary of Ransom, Pontiac Business and Professional Womens Club, Pontiac Moose Lodge, Pontiac Zonta Club and the Daughters of Isabella. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Esther Brown PONTIAC Esther "Anice" Brown, 69, of 1011 W.

Washington Pontiac, died at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 21, 1986) at Ancona. A graveside memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cornell Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Duffy Funeral Home, Pontiac, handled arrangements. She was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Cornell, a daughter of Harry and Cora Garretson Brown. Bloomington-Normal Benjamin Shupe Benjamin A.

Shupe, 68, of 917 W. Jefferson Bloomington, died: at 8:25 a.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986): at his residence. He had been ill.

He was taken to Beck Memorial Home, Bloomington. Harvey Wikowsky Harvey E. Wikowsky, 84, of 112 Hammitt Drive, Normal, died at 10:45 a.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986) at Americana Healthcare Center, Normal.

His funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, and at 10 a.m. at Epiphany Church, Normal, the Rev. John J. King officiating.

Burial will be in Wiley Cemetery, Col- Mr. Wikowsky Mr. Wikowsky fax. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, the rosary recited at 7 p.m.

He was born March 7, 1902, in Cooksville, a son of William and Mary Wilkes Wikowsky. He married Esther McReynolds on Nov. 29, 1924, in Chicago. She survives. Other survivors include one son, William Ellsworth; one daughter, Barbara A.

Lane, Pekin; one sister, Nora Zabel, Cooksville; seven grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal; a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Bloomington Council 574 and the Fourth Degree of the council. He was a member of the McLean County Farm Bureau. He attended Cooksville High School and Brown's Business College, Bloomington.

He farmed in the rural Arrowsmith area until retiring in 1957. He later worked for State Farm Insurance Cos. in the maintenance department for 10 years. Thelma Gooding Thelma J. Gooding, 86, of 2025 E.

Lincoln Bloomington, died at 2:03 a.m. yesterday (Oct. 23, 1986) at Mennonite Hospital, Bloomington. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stubblefield Funeral Home, Normal.

Her body was donated to science. She was born March 25, 1900, in Madison, a daughter of Henry and Ida Mae Cox Mrs. Gooding Johnson. She married Ralph U. Gooding on Sept.

11, 1923, in Madison. He died on April 12, 1979. Survivors include a son, Ralph, St. Cloud, a sister, Genvieve Utz, Walnut Creek, and four grandchildren. A daughter preceded her in death.

8 a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin. She was assistant registrar at Wisconsin while her husband pursued his doctorate. Upon conferral of Mr. Gooding's degree in 1931, the couple moved to Normal, where he taught chemistry for 33 years. Mrs.

Gooding was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, Normal Women's Club, Longfellow Club, Wednesday Book Club, Normal Neighborhood Club and Children's Theater. She served on the boards of Victory Hall, the YWCA and Community Chest. She also was president of the Women's Club at ISU, president of the Twin City Panhellenic group and president of Metcalf PTA. After retiring in 1964, the couple traveled extensively. Memorials may be made to Mennonite Hospital.

Reading carnival set for tonight A "Carnival of Reading" is being offered from 7 to 9 tonight in the Sugar Creek School gymnasium, 200 N. Towanda Normal. The event is sponsored by the Mid State Reading Council of the Illinois Reading Council and the International Reading Association. The evening is designed for children age 3 through grade six and their parents. The children will I be treated to a variety of reading activities including storytelling, reading aloud, a film and other activities in a carnival-like setting.

While the children are involved in the reading activities, parents will participate in a discussion and interaction with nationally known reading expert Jerry Mallott, keynote speaker for the Mid State Reading Council Conference earlier today. Woman to serve 2nd term on board Carol Weisheit of Normal has been elected to a second term on the Board of Directors for the Day Care Action Council of Illinois. Ms. Weisheit also is a board member for Bloomington Day Care Center, public policy chairwoman for the McLean County Association for the Education of Young Children and liaison to the state board of the Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children.

The Day Care Action Council is a not for-profit organization of day care centers, parents, home care providers, educators and concerned citizens who are dedicated to the promotion and expansion of quality day care throughout the state. It has four areas of concern, advocacy, resource and referral, public education and technical assistance. Robert A. Bell, son of Mary R. Bell, 2 Riser Bloomington, recently received a doctorate in botany from Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz.

He attended Metcalf School and University High School in Normal, graduating in 1975. Bell than entered Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1979. He received a master of seience degree from Illinois State University, Normal, in 1982. He is currently working: as a program coordinator for Environmental Sciences at Arizona State West Campus and is a research botanist at the Desert 1 Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Ariz. Bell and his wife, the former Paula Trump of Kingsford, a 1982 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, reside in Tempe.

3 from Twin Cities named to ed panel Three Bloomington-Normal residents have been named to the Illinois State Board of Education's Blue Ribbon Committee on the Improvement of Teaching as a Profession. The three are: George Churukian, chairman of the education department at Illinois Wesleyan University; state Sen. John Maitland, R-Bloomington; William S. Dunifon, dean of education at Illinois State University. The six-member commission's first meeting is today in Rosemont.

The committee is being asked to analyze recommendations made in two recent reports on the status of education in Illinois: the Carnegie Report by a group of business, education and governmental leaders, SCHOLARSHIPS Ronald E.
