THE PANTAGRAPH, SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 1982 B5 Incredible spinning man: ISU's Schuetz Sampson's routine falls flat ATLANTA (AP) Ralph Sampson's April fools joke almost went over like a lead basketball. Sampson, Virginia's 7-foot-4 center, leaned into the microphone Thursday night and told the Atlanta Tipoff Club's annual banquet he had received an offer he couldn't refuse from the Los Angeles Lakers. Sampson didn't even draw a chuckle from the audience that turned out to see him receive his second Naismith Award as college basketball's player of the year. I do." Before Sampson received the Naismith for the second year in a row, only Bill Walton of UCLA' had won the award more than once in its 14-year history in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Sampson's outstanding performance on court has led to some rough defensive tactics from opponents, but he said he's not worried that he may be injured seriously enough to threaten his career.

"I can hold my own anywhere I play," he said. "It's a joke," said the college junior. "You know, April fools." At that point, the crowd broke into laughter, and Virginia Coach Terry Holland smiled broadly. Sampson will have until May 15 to decide whether to stay in school or enter the National Basketball Association to play professionally. But as far as a decision, "I'm nowhere," Sampson said.

"Everybody wants to know if I'll be back," he said. "I don't really know. I like college. I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever Diving practice opened in September and will continue through March. Until that time, Schuetz will be working toward his goal to prequalify for the NCAA national championship in the one- and three-meter events.

"I'm just about 10 points away now," he said. As for long term plans, Schuetz said he eventually would like to work on a master's degree, perhaps coaching as a graduate assistant. "I see what a great asset Mcintosh has been to the team," he said of his coach. "She relates to Us on a person-to-person basis." Once again Schuetz will move on to coach, to work and to continue diving. "I guess my talent to spin pushed me into it," he said.

ISU sports information ISU volleyball adds Remack Illinois State University volleyball coach Linda Herman has added another blue-chip high school player to next year's roster. Jody Remack, from Barrington, has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at Illinois State in the fall. Last year, Remack made the Mid-Suburban League All-Conference team and the Suburban Trib All-Star team. At S-foot-11, Remack will fit in as a middle blocker for the Redbirds. "It takes a great deal of work for middle blockers and setters to click together," Herman said.

"But Jody is a quick learner and she'll be able to come in and do a great job for us." Remack was sought after by Ohio State, Purdue, Missouri and Nebraska before choosing ISU. Tennis courts open for night-time play The Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has announced that the tennis courts at Blooming-ton High School, Stevenson Park and O'Neil Park will be available for night-time play. Tennis lights will be turned on from dusk to 10 p.m. any evening that the temperature is above 50 degrees. These unsupervised courts are available on a first-come, first-served basis, free-of-charge.

The Bloomington High school tennis court lighting system may be activated by patrons wishing to play by manually turning on lighting for individual courts. Depleted NASL begins season Illinois State University diver Chris Schuetz is used to spinning around. Even with a blindfold, a push and a shove, he knows where he's going to "goof around on the boards." "I've had this desire to move ever since I was a kid," Schuetz said. "I started doing cartwheels and back flips in the living room at home, falling over furniture and breaking lamps. There just wasn't enough room." So he joined the swim team when he enrolled at Normal Community High School because there wasn't a gymnastics team, and he took a great liking to the water.

"Besides, I wanted to keep in shape," he said. A long-time resident of Normal, Schuetz didn't have to go far to get to ISU's diving team, where he has been for the past three years. "Chris is versatile, dedicated and very coachable," Coach Kathie Wickstrand Mcintosh said. "He's a top meet placer with a lot of talent and a good attitude." Schuetz was a walk-on his freshman year, but after demonstrating his diving ability was offered a scholarship. "That's why I decided to stay in the community," he said.

When Schuetz is not diving, he's in class, pursuing a degree in agricultural business. "Sure, I'm busy. But if you allocate your time for the right things, you don't get behind," he said. last year; offside will be marked from the center line instead of the 35-yard line and two substitutions will be permitted rather than three. Playoffs start Aug.

23 and will include the three divisional winners plus five wild cards. The championship will be decided September 18 with the single-game Soccer Bowl '82 in San Diego. The divisional alignments are as follows: Sunday, with an exhibition game against the World Cup-bound National team of Peru. The decline in teams, which NASL executives hope will strengthen the league by weeding out weakei fanchises, permits a schedule wher every player will appear in evry other stadium. "I think we'll see intense competition," Woosnam said.

"We've got a schedule that will greatly appeal to the fans, because they will be able to see every other team in the league." PREVIEW NEW YORK (AP) Northern Ireland's Jimmy Nicholl, who signed this week with Toronto, is the only internationally renowned newcomer to the emaciated North American Soccer League, which opens its 16th season today.

The number of franchises has dropped from 21 to 14. Out of business are Dallas, Washington, Minnesota, Los Angeles, California, Calgary and Atlanta. Attendence plummeted at 12 cities even though the sport's main competitor, professional baseball, was hit by a strike most of the season. None of the clubs made money, according to NASL Commissioner Phil Woosnam. Each year at this time, it is customary for clubs to announce the treasures of their off-season player shopping sprees in Europe and Latin America.

But this season, some of the highest-spending clubs, such as the Cosmos, are waiting to see who emerges as the sport's brightest stars after the World Cup, which concludes July 11 in Spain. Exodus This time, the exodus is from North America. A half dozen top players are taking three-month leaves of absence or quit the league to play for their national teams in the most prestigious soccer tournament in the world. Among the players who probably will be in Spain the national team rosters are not finalized are Nicholl; the Cosmos' Ivan Buljan (of Yugoslavia); David McCreery and Billy Caskey, both of the Tulsa Roughnecks (for N. Ireland); and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers' Teofilo Cubillas (for Peru).

Jean-Pierre Tokoto, captain of the Cameroon National team, could not come to terms with the Jacksonville Tea Men over his departure for the World Cup and did not sign a new contract. The restructured league, divided into Western, Eastern and Southern divisions, opens in three cities Saturday. Fort Lauderdale plays Jacksonville, Tulsa will visit Tampa Bay and San Diego hosts Vancouver. Toronto at San Jose, scheduled for Sunday, has been rained out and will be rescheduled. Competition By the end of next weekend, all 14 NASL teams will have debuted.
