The Daily Pantagraph, Dec. 3, 1980 B-3 Green, Easley Ail-American i It! Joining Green, Easley and Singletary on the star-studded defensive unit are end Scott Zettek of Notre Dame, tackles Leonard Mitchell and Kenneth Sims of Texas, inside linebacker David Little of Florida, outside linebacker Lawrence Taylor of North Carolina and deep backs Ronnie Lott of Southern Cal and John Simmons of Southern Methodist. The AP All-America squad will be featured on the Bob Hope Christmas Show on NBCTV, Dec. 16 from 8-9 p.m., EST. From the first game of his freshman year, when he made 11 tackles, two fWM 'Mir' quarterback sacks and blocked a punt against a Notre Dame team that went on to win the national championship, Green has been a defensive terror.

He made more than 100 tackles in each of his four seasons at Pitt, making second-team All-America as a freshman and first-team in each of the last three years. Earlier this week, he finished second in the Heisman balloting, a level reached by only two other linemen who didn't double as pass-catching ends. Easley finished second on the UCLA team with more than 100 tackles and broke the school's interception before the end of his junior year. Houston Coach Bill Yeoman calls him "one of the most dominant figures in college football' On the offensive side of the ball, Rogers is the nation's leading rusher with 1,781 yards, an average of 161.9 yards per game. He ranks as the fourth leading rusher in history with 4,958 yards, trailing only Tony Dorsett, Charles White and Archie Griffin.

He will carry a string of 21 consecutive 100-yard games into the Gator Bowl against Pitt and he holds South Carolina's career total offense mark without ever having thrown a pass. 7 i V- Kent Schneider of Illinois Wesleyan and Olivet Nazarene's Pat Martin' Bumn miJ bumPed each other while going for the Ump ana CneCK ball in basketball action Tuesday night. Junior of Alabama Ohio State gets another cage recruit COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Ninth-ranked Ohio State's basketball team has landed its second prep recruit, 6-foot playmaking guard Troy Taylor from Canton, Ohio, more than four months ahead of the national signing date. Earlier, 6-8 forward-center Joe Con-check of Canal Fulton, Ohio, had selected the Big Ten Conference power. Eldon Miller, the Buckeyes' coach, said it benefits the athlete as well as the colleges when a player announces so early. "It helps the school they're going to attend and the ones where they're not going to attend," Miller said. "And it takes a lot of pressure off of the player.

He can concentrate on his academics and basketball in his last high school season." Ohio State will lose three senior regulars to graduation; 6-10 center Herb Williams, 6-9 forward Jim Smith and 6-2 guard Carter Scott, as well as top-line backcourt substitutes Todd Penn and Marquis Miller. Miller has five scholarships to offer players on the binding national letter of intent signing date on April 8, 1981. Taylor, a three-year starter for Canton McKinley High School, averaged 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in making the third team All-Ohio squad as a junior. "He was our No. 1 recruit at that position this year," Miller said of the point guard.

"He possesses great quickness, great passing skills and is excellent at penetrating to the basket." Shebby retires from Danville post DANVILLE (AP) Paul Shebby, one of high school football's legendary coaches, retired Tuesday after 13 years at the helm of Danville High School. Shebby, 67, coached football and basketball in parts of six decades beginning in 1936 at Pittson, where he developed Charley Trippi who became one of Georgia's great triple thread backs and later played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League. Shebby coached at Danville Schlarman from 1948 to 1967 and in 19 years took his basketball teams to the Sweet Sixteen four times with his 1953 team finishing fourth in the state. In 1968 at Danville High his team captured the Big 12 football championship. In 13 years at Danville High his teams won seven conference titles and two co-championships and made four appearances in the Class 4A playoffs with his 1976 team finishing second after losing to Joliet Catholic 16-8.

But Moodie would not sign a felony complaint. "There was not enough evidence of intent to commit a felony," Moodie said Tuesday. Both men pleaded innocent and were released on $1,000 bond each. A trial date has not been set. According to the complaint, Talbott reported to campus security the theft of $43 from his room.

But as there was no sign of forced entry, Talbott thought entry was made with a key, the complaint states. Talbott left his room after discovering the theft, but two friends. William Walton and Steven Parker, stayed behind and soon heard a knock on the door, the complaint says. When they didn't answer the knock, they heard a key turning in the lock and Gregory and Justice entered the room. Gregory had a cloth over his hand, Parker said in the complaint.

Gregory, the complaint states, then threatened to beat Walton and Parker if they said anything of the incident. "The only untouchable on the club is Garry Templeton," Herzog said. "I'm going back to St.

Ex-Badger in trouble SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) University of Wisconsin-Superior basketball players James "Stretch" Gregory and Kenneth Justice were charged Monday in Douglas County Circuit Court with unlawful entry, a misdemeanor. It was the second time Gregory has been charged with a violation of the law since enrolling this spring at UWS after starring in 1976 for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Gregory faces trial Jan. 30 on charges of possession of marijuana, public consumption of alcohol and littering in connection with his first arrest.

UWS athletic director Mertz Mortorelli said the two players have not been suspended from the team and whTtontinue to play. The Yellow Jackets play at North Carolina-Charlotte Saturday. Gregory, 23, and Justice, also 23, are charged with entering the room of David Talbott without permission on Nov. 7. Talbott lives in Ostrander Hall on the UWS campus.

Funks Seeds 44 i HOUSTON (AP) "If anyone's gonna catch any heat," Bud Adams said with a laugh, "it's gonna be him, not me." And three floors up in the Houston Oilers' headquarters, Bum Phillips might have wondered who left the furnace door open. This was supposed to be the Oilers' year. In Pittsburgh, the Steelers, owners of four Super Bowl rings, are talking about one for the thumb.

But Bum, his team twice victimized by the Steelers in conference championship games, already had told Houston's long-suffering fans that the Oilers, having knocked on the door two times without getting it opened, were ready to kick it in. Which is why a steel door, the brainchild of a newspaper-sponsored contest in Pittsburgh, will be hauled into the Astrodome Thursday night and why Phillips just may not be able to deliver the Oilers into the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl. Bum's been catching plenty of heat lately, albeit not from his boss. Losing a division lead by dropping two games in a row can rile a few people. And Houstonians are not exactly the laid-back type.

They've been cluttering up the radio talk show phone lines with demands for Bum's crew-cut scalp. In a few cities, where owners have a tendency to shoot from the hip, Bum's scalp already might have a few razor cuts on it. But Adams prefers the silent partner approach. You don't find him dictating player trades or complaining about how this player cost the team a victory. He hired a coach and general manager (Bum is both) and is content to let him coach and manage.

Technical-Clinen-beard Country Gentleman "If we're introducing our No.l draft choice or making a trade or making an announcement, I don't even attend the press conference," says Adams, who has owned the club outright since he helped found the American Football League and the Houston franchise with it in 1959. "We have some owners in our ranks, new owners, so to speak.

Take Robert Irsay in Baltimore. It's kind of new to him and hs finding out the hard way what makes this thing tick. Some days he probably wishes he'd never gotten up. Other days he wishes he'd gone to bed early because he's caught a lot of flak for saying things he probably regrets saying. "Some guys who have gotten into sports, while it's brand new to them, there's a lot of prestige, a lot of press, and they want to be a part of the action and it trips them up.

It didn't take John McMullen (of baseball's Houston Astros) but one year to get tripped up. Irsay's told me he's listening now, not talking," said Adams. He's going to be watching Thursday night to see if Houston can get that monkey known as Pittsburgh off its back. He admitted that for years even into the opening game of the 1980 season in Pittsburgh the Oilers victimized themselves with a tunnel vision of sorts. Beating the Steelers was the goal.

While another team might concern itself strictly with getting to first place, rather than with the team occupying it, Houston had a one track mind, colored black and gold. That's how this whole season has been viewed by many. Even the trades, particularly the one with Oakland for quarterback Ken Stabler, was interpreted as a move designed to enable Houston to beat the Steelers because the Snake was so good at it. "That's what everybody thinks," Phillips said, not trying to conceal a wince, "that we got him because he beat Pittsburgh. He didn't eat Pittsburgh.

Oakland beat Pittsburgh. A football team does it. No one guy does something. We got Kenny Stabler because we thought he was more of a controlled short passer who would go better with our play action stuff and our running game. That was the only reason we got him, not because I thought he was any answer to beating Pittsburgh."
