Hie large and influential denomination lsnown aa Universal 1st propose to nse the hundredth year of the introduction of their theological views into this country, not only for pisteful and congratulatory celebrations, but also for the higher purposes of gathering funds, thus enriching their various organisations, establishing new institutions and carrying forward mlestonaiy and charitable works. The anniversary proper is 1170 but preliminary movements to itq observance have already began; and one of these, promising to be of peculiar interest, is to take place at the School Street Church in this city, this evening, according to the announcement in another column. Though thus recognising a marked stage in their progress, the Universal ills do not for a moment concede that their apecial tenet la of modern origin; but.

on the contrary, and of course, maintain tbat it is aa old as the Gospel- Certainly the belief of tbe final destruction of evil and the restoration of all seals through tbe mediation and teaching of Christ, wss held by some of the most noted of tbe early Fathers and has been cherished by rosny la all branches of the church. Indeed, aa a speculation, if not as a conviction, on philosophical, if not on distinctively Scriptural gronnda.it is probably true that a minority of thoughtful believers are disinclined to accept literally tbe dogma of eternal punishment; so that tbe sect that makes the rejection of this dogma their distinct tive peculiarity, by no means includes all who are in sympathy and accord with them, negatively, if not with positive and controversial avowal. Of the sect using that term merely to recognise a body of Christians it is to be said that they have a history of which they may well be proud, for its record of courage, seal, enterprise, good deeds, patriotism, and eminent success. From humble beginnings, against earnest and denunciatory opposition they bavs grown to be a power In the land and won recognition of their nambeos, their intellectual and moral strength. In the United States have spread for and wide, bailtnp numerous flourishing cungrcgmtiona and secured tbe services of a large band oi able clergymen and divines to take charge of their parishes and educational institutions.

Among other lights some now living and some departed it is only necessary to name Murray, Balfour, the Ballons, Henry Bacon, the two Kings (Ihther and son), Dean, Skinner, Wbittemore, Ryder, Leonard, Bartholomew, Chapin, Miner, Sawyer, and Thayer, to intimate both tbe growth and the ability which has characterised and still characterises the advocates of the final salvation or restoration of all men. The increase of numbers, wealth, and all that contributes to the external prosperity ot the Uni-veraalisrs, has been attended with a corresponding increase in culture and spiritual life, and a devotion to all philanthropic measures promising to elevate the morals ot the community and give vigor to religious influences. Accordingly they may well look with satisfaction upon their past, bejastly content with their present, and resolve to gain for themselves higher and more efficient ftature. Whether agreeing with them or not In the whole of their creed or the main feature of it, all liberal and catholic-minded people will recognise their assnredend high position in the Church, rejoice with them in their prosperity, and hope with them that the century on which they are about to enter may be a centuiy of advancement in all that la true, pure, humane, uplifting and saving In Christian development. Sold by Ell druzgtata in Boston and elsewhere. WBMSt ntt TEE FILLIES OF CHAXIES RIVER. Another hearing ea the above subject was glvou by tha Hiium Committee this forenoon. Mr. Horace Gray offered a ftw snggestiona In regard to the expediency, pecuniary and aauitary, of the proposed filling, some of which were novel In their nature.

They Included a public esplanade along tha margin of tbe river, beyond which no ball ding should take pi sea, or a plank promenade, if the solid esplsuode should prove too expensive. Ho also suggested that, ulth this flaa opportunity for air. Beacon street eon Id bo widened, and tbo Common sold for house lota with profit, though not without Injury to the health of tha eity; and he was of tha opinion that had the Back Bay never been filled, tha western section of the city would have proved more desirable. Ho did not believe that the proposed filling would pay for building purposes, aa It waa manifestly better policy to Invest la laud In tbo snlaxbB at a few cents foot than st a dollar oa the now city land. Hr.

Edward Atkinson appeared as representative of property on the river front of which ho was trustee. Though he had not attended tha previous hearings, ho had watched their tendonoy.aad had gained a good idea of them by reading the newspaper iraporta. Ha enlarged somewhat upon the smtawtionsiasda by Mr. Gray, and fbvorod a wide esplanade extoudtug from the West Boot on to the Brookline bridge, the lands aida laid out as a horse railroad, with a depth of from fifty to eovaity-five feat of trees Intervening between tha railroad and a driveway or promenade overlooking the From tha Brookline bridge the railroad and drive eould bo extended to ChnstnntHlll Bosorvoir, on tha line of which tha equivalent of a public park already exists. Ho fevered tbo deepening of the river channel for tha improvement ot wharf privileges above, but did not eonsldar a three hundred or fire hundred flop channel alone sufficient to promote tha health of the city.

In regard to the disposal of sawsgo, Mr. AtMnsoa aid that he believed a sew system would eventually be perfected which would render the base of this esplanade available for drainage, with tha aid of a pump near the hotel oa the Mllldam, on the Loadoa plan of successive levels toward the sea until the backwash waa overcome. Mr. Brackett, a coal, wood and grain dealer of Newton Corner, testified that hia coal waa carried np tha river under fifteen bridges In screw propeller barges, at au expensa of about forty-five cento per ton for transfer handling in tha harbor. He bad a yearly business of about 70M tons of coal.

cords of wood, and W.OCS bushels of grain. was ton three to five fleet of waterin' front of hia wharf at high tide, and one foot at low tide. If the river was dredged so tbat vessels could come through, the expense of tbs harbor transfer would bo saved. Miles Pratt, iron manufacturer of Watertown, sold it would ho au advantage to hia business If Charles river waa dredged to Watertown. It cost him SI per ton to transport by rail to liia yard what could bo hrosgkf by vessels for ona-tblrd that price.

Ho asad yearly from IMP to MM tons of material, tha principal portion of which was returned to the city in the manufactured state at from 81 to at par ton. Mr. Coaaeus, a wood and coal dealer, whoso wharf Is mar the Btookline bridge, stated that the deepening of tbe river channel would be a benefit to his place ot business. Nathaniel Whiting of Watertown said the bottom of the river between Watertown and Brighton, according to the 15T estimates, could be dredged and made available for filling on tbo Baek Bay at MM cents per cubic yard. It was composed of sand and gravel.

Tha towns on tbe river would be greatly benefited by the deepening, and the estimates were made at their Instance. Tbe population along the river has rapidly Increased, and the manufactures at Watertown have been much extended In late years. Mr. Whiting said the dredging would enhance the value of much preparty in Watertown. A straightening ot the channel would Improve navigation, aa vessel were obliged to ns togs or drift with the tide.

The flats on the Cambridge side between West Boston bridge and tbe Mllldam, when hare, were very attentive. Even if tha odor woo considered healthful, bo desired to be excused from Inhaling it. Adjourned until P. M. KXTSBTAIXUKNT THIS STOUTS.
