Wixslow. We regret to bo called upon to record the sudden death of Mr. Franklin 'Winslow, long known as the cashier in the office of the Boston Journal. For mbie than twenty years be has occupied that important position to the satisfaction of his employers. As former resident of Dorchester, aa a neighbor there and elsewhere, end in bis intercourse always with friends and acquaintances, Mr.

Winslow had the warm esteem or all who knew him and enjoyed his genial manners, or were the recipients of kindly regards and services. The particulars of tha accident ere thus stated in the Journal: Mr. Winslow left the office last evening at about nine o'clock, and took the train for hie residence nt Newton. On reaching the depot ne stepped from the smoking-car upon the inward track, and as ha stepped out in some way tripped and fell upon his back just as tbe Inward train was passing Middlesex Hall. He was struck by tbe locomotive, which passed over him, as did also tbe baggage car and forward wheels of tbe next car.

The wheels passed over his left thigh, cutting his leg so that it hnng by a slight band of flesh Just below tbe knee. The femur was fractured, the wheels pasting from the knee upward, and there was a wound in the left inqoinal region through which the contents of the abdomen escaped; From the wrist of the left arm to the shoulder tbe whole arm was a mass or Jelly, and only held to the shoulder by mere shreds. There were a number or slight bruises on either side of the face, and a ent on the back of tbe head. Mr. Winslow was about 45 years of age, and leaves a wife and four children, who will have tha tendereat sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad and sudden bereavement.

He had been connected with the Journal office for over twenty years, and was highly esteemed for his many good qualities of head and heart by those who were associated with him In business, as well ns by the very large circle who snared bis acquaintance. His body was taken to tbe depot and medical aid at once summoned. Dr. T. 8.

Keith and Dr. 8 tone were soon present, but he was dead before they arrived. Coroner John M. Flake took ckarge or the body end will hold an inquest today. WITH SUPPLEMENT.

In addition to thi, it prominent fanfare, the extT aheet is by no means without other claima to perusal. Tmk Elkctiox, yesterday, in MsasachnsetU, Temout.trated how eaaily the Republicans can triumph in the State with entirely unobjectionable candidates for the principal oflloes.

Without an effort the Republican nominee for Goreroor, William R. Washburn, will hare a plurality equalling one-half of the combined opposition rote. The Labor Retom and Prohibition parties, aa the flpures show, are struggling to see which shall acquire a numerical superiority, when neither of them is able to east ten thousand rotes. loli ticul labor reform and political prohibition make a great pother before election, considering tlie amaU foundation of popular support upon which they are ultimately seen to rest. Mr.

Washbnrna aamcintca on the State ticket will hare about the same majority aa the nominee to Governor. All the Executive Councillors are Republican, and the Legislature is too much in the same direction to he a pleasant subject for contemplation on the part of an enemy of tlie dominant party. In Suffolk county all the county officers rlioseu belong to the Republican party. The ri 'election of Hon. H.

H. Coolidge to the Senate from the Fourth District, by a majority exceeding GOO; the success of the Hon. Charles Hale in the Thin, and the astonishing revolution wliereby Mr. Johnson la returned from tlie Sixth District, are matters Of general congratulation among Republicans. To tlie House of Representatives Boston sends several experienced legislators, vis.

Col. A. J. Wright, Hon. Moses Kimball, Col.

C. R. Codinan and Frederick W. Lincoln, either of whom would creditably fill the speakership, and all of whom are well known throughout the Coin iuou wealth. The sons of Massachusetts, at home and abroad, should feel abundantly satisfied with the result of this election.

Tiik Taxmast Rout. Tlie victory over Tammany in Kew York city and State is something to lie emphasized and held up for imitation ns well as approval, without a moments delay. The story is simple but immensely significant. Gross, long-continued rascality, bating its origin in a criminal indifference to and neglect of their pnblic duties tlie better class of citizens, selfishly the evil to become gigantic, at last provoked an exposure chietly the persistent work of tlie courageous Kow York Times. This ex-I oure created alarm, compelled other journals nuil leading men who bad characters at stake, and the fair fame of tlieir parly to uphold to follow its lead.

The discussion went on, the wickedness was more and more uncovered, until wliat? Why, until it became simply a question whether the metropolitan city should he turned over to the plunder of a mob or redeemed at the polls, or by a Vigilance Committee. Tins alarming crisis enforced, by an appeal to M-lf-interest and justifiable fears, the responsibilities of citizenship, and by these as a dominant motive force drove the respectable and decent portion of the city to the ballot-boxes, com-H-Uing them to waive care for tlieir own busi-iicm and attend to tlieir own business as wrapt up iu the public welfare so imminently threatened. All honor to those who even at the elev- euth hour listened to compulsion, saw the danger ami met it. Especially, all honor to those Df-niucnita, influential and honest leaden, men of sense and sagacity, who rose above party, joined in the work of reform and accomplished no mu all part of it. Tweed, the embodiment of official corruption, escapes defeat in a district, all Democratic, after having his majority reduced more than one-half.

Tlie honest men who will control both branches oltbe next Kew York Legislature will take tlierarilest opportunity to rid themselves of bis presence, should lie attempt to assist in tlie work of law-making at Albany. All his confreres in guilt in the city are buried beneath the weight of popular indignation. The result hss proved that the commercial emporium of the Union has long been in the hands of thieves only by the sufferance of the classes opposed to corruption, but who have not, in recent yean, exhibited their power. Nationally, the overthrow of Tammany destroys a great centre of Democratic opinion and influence throughout the oonntry. The same elements which scattered this heretofore formidable combination secured a Republican triumph in the State at large, and detached Kew York from the Democratic column.

It decided tlie question that the next Presidential rally of the Democracy will not be to victory, hat for the privilege of continued existence. Yesterday! work was one of the utmost importance in all its relations, political, economical and moral. Its effects will not be confined to ibis side of the Atlantic. Fkox Dotkr to Calais. Active operations are in progress, liotli at Calais and Dover, to enlarge these ports in order to facilitate international travel, in view especially to the increased necessity for communication between England and Austria through France and Germany, on account of the t7nlvereal Exhibition at Vienna.

The English Government has authorised extensive enlargements at Dover; while in France Mr. Scott Russell is making earnest effort to persuade the Ministry to adopt a project to greatly improving the roadstead at Calais. An English company will construct an enormous boat on the model of the Great Eastern, which will be able to carry two entire railway-trains, which will leave the Victoria Station at the same time; by which passengers will he able to go direct from London to Vienna, either by Cologne and Frankfort, or via Paris, Strasbourg and Munich, without change of cars. Kxw Flan fob Taxation. A Belgian at Lieges has invented a new method of taxation to all kinds of manufactured fabrics.

It consists of narrow little bands of thin gummed paper, marked off into metres and centimetres, which should he fastened ail along the edge of every piece of cloth. The material would thus measure itself, as it were, without the aid of a yardstick, and the quantity sold would he self-n-giftered. These bands, furnished by Government, would cost the State fifteen centimes per hundred metres. If Government should si'll them at one franc a hundred metres, it would every year make a very respectable number of millions. On a silk dress worth two hundred francs the tax would ha only from twelve to fifteen centimes, with the advantage of perfect accuracy of measurement without tlie possibility of mistake or cheating.

SsmII Despatch I the Traascrlpl, New Yonx, Sth. Some remarkable political changes occurred yesterday in the State election. William Caldwell, editor of the Sunday Mercury, waa elected Democratic State Senator two years ago from the Ninth district by 2874 majority; now Judge Robertson, Republican, is elected by a majority folly as large. Two years ago John Decker, Democrat, waa elected Assemblyman from Richmond county, Staten Island, by 900 majority; now David W. Judd, Republican, associate editor of Moores Rural New Yorkers, is elected by 686 majority.

Judd la the first Whig or Republican Assemblyman from Richmond county In twenty yean. OBrien beats the corrupt Bradley for State Senator oat of sight, though Bradley was backed by all tbe power of Tammany, O'Brien's friends were wild with Joy all night. The Democratic majority in the city is reduced on an average from fifty-two to fifty-five thousand. The result shows that the great reserve of honest voters was out. Uen.

Sigels majority for Register Is computed at ten thousand. The Herald says, editorially: All honor Is due to the business men or Now York fur the part they have taken in securing this result, and they will learn from the success of their present efforts that they have only their own apathy and neglect to blame for the greater portion of tbe misgovern-ment to which they have been subjected. Hitherto base political managers have been suffered to run tha machine arte- their own fashion, and now the better classes of our people have advanced to take an active part In elections. Tbe Tunes says: Will anybody say bow that it is of no nse to light against Tammany? Will the croakers tell us today that honest citizens aland no chanco against corrupt politicians? The victory wo have won is priceless, not only from what it gives us now, bnt because it will re-viva every mans faith in tha ultimata triumph of truth and Justice; because it will teach scheming politicians that tbo voice of tbe people is supreme, and that the immortal principles on which this Government Is founded, although they may be momentarily stifled by dishonest factions, will constantly rise triumphant, while the men who assailed them will pass away to everlasting infomy. The Snn says: The time is more than ripe for universal political reform.

If all that the American people have learned to hold dear is not to bo lost in one bottomless abyss of corruption, the work mast begin st once. Let the revolution initiated here yesterday extend all over the country, and republican liberty and self-government will be preserved." The World says: Tbe Republican State ticket is elected by ten thousand majority. As It never rains bnt ponrs, the majority may be even non than this. Wo have lost the State Legislature, bnt the Republicans will fall for short of a two-thirds vote in either boose. The reform movement was worked In the interest of the Republican State ticket in this city, as our old-time majorities were largely reduced.

There is a general feeling of rejoicing throughout tbe city today, and the belief prevails that wa can secure pure city government In future. Tweed will be expelled immediately should he present himseir in the Senate. It is believed that he never expected to claim a seat. Tbe 4 A. M. despatch to the New Knglond A Mods ted Press, that this State had gone Republican by thlrty-flvs to forty thousand majority, with only aix lammaayltea In the Senate and the Assembly two-thiids Republican, needs ('hlDA. The Herald heads its returns, What the people did about it It says the cltisens have achieved a substantial victory over the dynasty of Tammany hat still has much to aejomplish ia houeet reformation when Tweed, O'Brien, Field and Aleck Frear are sent to the Legislature, it says. All honor to the business men of New Ynrktor the result of yesterday.

By this result General Grant marches on to vietoty, end Fenton and Greeley disappear with Tammany. Tbe Times heads the returns, New York Redeemed: It says all the King thieves, exoept Tweed, are gone Genet, Norton, Nultman, Bradley, Irving, Caldwell, end Tom Fields ars defeated. The defeat of the latter seen ree the election of lloratio Beymour to tbe Assembly. The Times ediionally say: Wo have gained greater victory than we dared to hope for. The state came to our help with an ardor never to bo forgotten.

The victory won is price lea, with the new Legislature we can sweep away th city charter and pass any laws necessary for the welfare of the people. All honor to the estimable citizens who sacrificed personal comfort to the welfare of tbe community. The Tribune styles the election The people's verdict. It says that tha people have proclaimed adhesion to the divine mandate, Thou shalt not if the result seems less than a complete Republican triumph. It is so because tbo Republicans In some instances presented candidates identified with the frauds and robberies of Tammany.

Tha (irople have decided that them shall be an end to all Jobbery and corruption in office, and the victory means that there shall speedily be a new era of uprightness in tha Government and frugality in tne Administration, a reduction of taxes, and decreasing public debt. The World's heading is Nothing left of Tammany but the Boms. Editorially It says: We have lost the I-gi ilature, and the Republicans will not fall far short of two-thirds vote In both houses. The Reform movement was worked In the interest of the Republican State ticket in this city. Had it nut been for tbe Tammany scandal there le no doubt the Democratic party would have shown handsome gains in New York as well aa in other states.

The bun's beading 1s, Ths End of Tammany. Editorially It says: The victory yesterday is not a party victory: it is simply a revolt of tbe people against fraud, corruption and bribery. Ami tbe mighty movement cannot be limited to New York, as tbe time is more than ripe for universal political reformation.1 Tbe Journal of Commerce says that the fight thus auspiciously begun must be kept np. The combination of respectable citizens must not rest nnlil stealing Is maids as scarce and frugality as common aa they were among the great rival parties thiity years ago. It camions everybody to place no trust in the hope that tlie Legislature will restore good government to the city unless honest citizeus maintain unremitting pressure to that end.

Tammany Hall was not opened last night, bnt Isaiah kynders atldresned a small street assemblage from tbe steix, eulozizing the Rerormers, and stating that Tammany was not the Democratic party. The Brooklyn Union this morning concedes that that city hss gone Democratic, but stoutly maintains that it baa bean carried by dishonest counting. as tbe return were held baca in several Democratic districts. Powell iDem.) la elected Mayor by thirteen rhonaand over ttonth. and ten thousand over Booth and Kslbfleieeh.

The State Democratic ticket in Brooklyn is elected by ten thousand majority. Brooklyn is tha slowest city in the country from which to obtain complete and reliable returns. Victoria Woodhall and Tennis Clsflin offered votes yesterday, but were refused tbe privilege. 31m. Wood bull protests in lengthy card.

A few additional returns from the interior in-cresae the Republican majority, and show an increased return of Republicans to the Assembly. Flk denies leaving the city election day for fear tbe Ninth Regiment would be colled oat. UBrien denies that be made any compact with Tweed, bnt on tbe contrary supported Sigel throughout.
