We hear much said st the east of the Immense natural resources of the great wMt; and I think It Is hr from being an original remark, that thli Is a great country; yet I sppribsnd that fow of our people got any adequate conception of the meaning of these true and stale expressions, un-Iras they coma west and see with tholr own eyes. Describe to the Boston trader the growth and business of Chicago; tell him them were sixty arrivals of sail vessel, at the port, and steamboats without number, during tbs Ant day I spent In the city; tell the Boston architect that the gran-lie warehouses of her Qulnrys at tho head of City wharf, and the Iron (font odiflee or her Grays on Court street, are very wall In their way; hut that, If lie will extend the former the whole length of Commercial street, put story or two on the latter, eontluue It to Tremont street and from tlionre to Kings Chapel burying ground, and make the streets twin or Hires times as wldo they an now, lie will begin to make the business streets of Boston look like tho business streets of Chicago, and both of tgso worthy Individuals, unless they have visited the Garden City, would either point suggestively with their right thumb to tlielr left shoulder, or would set you down us most unscrupulous liar, your statement all the while being strictly true. "But," said he finally, and with an emphatic gesture, "I don't belicre in ill" Till won not an unreasonable conclusion for one who had not seen fbr himself the bash on which tills miracle city of the West Is growing up, nnd studied its business connections with the great citlei of the Atlantic seaboard. Nathaniel Jabyis Wyeth, This gentleman, whose bum is so closely connected with raaay movements of public ns turn, died st his residence In Cambridge on Sunday, at the of SI years. Mr. Wyeth was one of tho remarkable men of Now England, and as one whe has laid open a new field for honorable Industry, Is entitled to the rank of a public benefactor.

It Is owing to him more than to any etlior Individual, that the Ice trade has attained to its present Importance. Ws hare no doubt this statement receives the foil assent of those who, by their enterprise and capital, hero done so much to bring It it Into foil operation. Until 1833, when Mr. Wyeth first devoted hlmsolf to the securing and Storing of Ice (hr Frederic Tudor, the amount obtained did not much exccod 4000 tons annually, and the tools used were the common Implements of husbandly; Indeed, with the saw and the sxe, the greater part of tlis work was slowly and Imperfectly accomplished. New tools for rutting the lee, new machines (hr raising It from the water and depositing It In tho itoro houses, were to be In von ted and brought Into operation.

All this was successfully accomplished by the mechanical skill and peneveranee of Mr. Wyeth, and the result Is, that moro Ice of a superior quality Is now secured In one good "Ice day," than was consumed by the whole trade In 1833. It Is not, perhaps too much to soy, that there is not a single tool or machlno of real value now employed In tho Ice harvesting, which was not originally Invented by Ur. Wyeth; they all look to Fresh Tend as tho place of their origin. The necessities of the case are peculiar; they require that all the machinery should be exceedingly simple, that Its use may Be quickly learned by laborers, most of whom are new every year, many changed each day, and very fow accustomed to any other tools than tho There can lie no long train of machinery, one part depending upon tho accurate working of another, a failure In which would immcdiutcly render a large number of laborers at once Idle.

Thera Is no time to spare, for the number of days of really good Ice weather, during which nil this work must be accomplished, raivly exceeds twenty in a season. The first great step was the Invention of the "Ice cutter, by which the blocks are rapidly and accurately rut of the proper sloe, and the wedging bar, by which the partially cut blocks ara separated from the large mass of Ice awl from each other. Then came tho snow plane," by which the froxen snow Is removed from the solid block, lcuving It a beautiful, transparent mass of crystal. Machinery was Invented for reducing all the blocks to the sumc thickness, and for removing such portions of their surface that tiny should, when packed, touch nt certain points only, nml consequently, when froxen together in the storehouses, be easily separated, an effort not unlike that produced by milling the edge of the silver dollar. Cotilrivanccs for raising the lee from the water, placing It upon sleds, transferring It to the hoisting gigs or Inclined plane, by which It was raised to the proper height to be shot Into the lie house the arrangements of tlie ice houses themselves, by which the walls shall resist the transmission of beat a matter requiring much consideration; nil these were suecessfolly studied, and the results are, that now a lee house is constructed capable of storing tons, nnd In Massachusetts alone not 1cm than 300,000 tons ara secured annually.

It sboitbl be lorne In mind that profitable employment Is thus afforded to tlamsanda of kdmrcrs in the most inclement season of the year, who would otherwise be without Income. With Mr. Wyeth's energy, boldness and enterprise, all must be familiar who have read Washington Irvings Interesting account of the Rocky Mountains and the far West, ninny of the most ntriking Incidents of which ara drawn from Mr. Wyeths journal, but few probably ara aware of his philosophical turn of mind, which is so strongly exhibited In bis lettera to the bureau of Indian uflhirs, published in Schoolenft'a History of Indians, In which he enters into the affinities of the languages of the several tribes between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific, and their ethnological relations. Ills description of their employments, manners and customs, government, and moral developments, are all exceedingly clear nnd distinct, nnd his hints for their pacification appear to be Judicious nnd practical.

Had the government, was once promised, carried out Its plan of building line of military and trading posts across tbs Western country, it Is easy to sea that immense advantages would have accrued to the trades, and much murder and bloodshed prevented as It was, be bnllt unaided Fort Hall on Lewiss river, not far from what la now called Fremonts Peak, and for time maintained It as i trading station, but it was eventually sold to tbs Hudsons Bay Company, and although not lost to civilization, was far less useful to American industry than It ought to have been. For the development of branch of Industry, all the receipts of which ore gain to the country, for his exertions In extending the limits of civilisation, Mr. Wyeth deserves the honorable remembrance of bis countrymen. Journal. i I tended worship yesterday and 1 knew nothing of i the denominational peculiarities of the audience 1 until I aliened their hymn looks wm so much like what I ice and listen to every Sunday, that 1 could hardly Imagine myself moro than five mllet from Boston. Tire church was elegantly I finished, furnished with carpets, cushions and gu fixtures, ss any of our suburban churehot, and if that was not New England audience, then I know nothing of New England physiognomy. The clergyman in his discourse gave ns quite long Latin quotation, nnd having thus presumed upon our (apposed erudition, he did not, a I have sometimes known preachers to do, Insult us by appending to It an English translation. It was not my object in this letter to go into particulars, but simply to report myself, snd to record fow general Impressions.

When I shell stop st any point long enough to write ont my IdeM, yon shall hear from me further. I will simply add that I cams to Chicago by the Col-lingwood route, nnd that I (bond it the most delightful route that I have ever been on. The largest portion of the route, which Is lake navigation, Is magnificent, and most refreshing to the business man and pleasure seeker. The steamer Buckeye State, on which we came from Colling-wood to Chicago, I think the finest nnd staunchest host I wm ever on, and the had the least jarring motion. The Captain, Clerk and nil employed on board, were most attentive; the table was excellent, and vocal nnd Instrumental quartette belonging to the boat gave ni concert! every evening, and an opportunity for those who wished to shake the light fantastic toe.

I tee that the peculiar freight advantages of this line are appreciated by eastern merchants, of time I shall speak In another letter. Muinxan in Kansas.
